If you've got Robocod (the sequel to James Pond) and haven't got James Pond then I order you to go out and buy this immediately without delay. A great game.

From the super-cute sprites through to the brilliant scenery (check out Pond's underwater home!), everything is a graphical feast to behold. The playability's fab as well, with plenty of different missions to keep you going (with groan-worthy titles as well - A View to a Spill is my fave!), and even stacks of hidden bonuses and rooms to find. This is a brilliant arcade adventure with a loads of laffs guaranteed. Go on dive in.

It's essentially a platform game, but very well mapped to make pixel perfect control of the free-floating fish a necessity. This should go down in the annals as a classic because of its playability, but also because of the incredible array of characters. This fish could become a cult.

Steve has produced a console conversion that is a near-perfect copy of the 16-bit versions. In doing so he has kept the humour, the complexity that is in some of the puzzles, the addictiveness and the mad graphics that made the original stand out. This game will hopefully show the Japanese what the Mega Drive can do beyond shoot-'em-ups.

Secret rooms and variations on the basic theme (like leading beleaguered fish and seals to safety) add to the appeal. And four different ditties or suitably silly sound effects help jolly along the proceedings. The difficulty level is just about right to start with but some of the later missions require some pretty impressive joystick juggling and will probably need several attempts to complete. James Pond won't hold your attention once all 12 missions are successfully completed, but for a few weeks at least you should be hooked.

[Budget re-release] JP doesn't pretend to be more than a fun arcade platformy affair and it's great if you treat it as such. There are loads of bonuses and lives to be picked up, sub-games (if you can find them) and mucho silliness. Thank cod for James Pond.

It's a shame the scrolling couldn't have been smoother, but apart from that the visuals are bursting with kaleidoscopic colour, the sound effects are a masterpiece and the action is going to keep you rooted to your chair. In short, you can't afford to miss it.

Cute is the first word that springs to mind when it comes to describing James Pond: Underwater Agent, playable is definitely the second - however if there is one problem, it might just be that the 12 levels aren't enough.

James Pond provides plenty of fun when you first start playing, but unfortunately it doesn't hold its appeal over a long period of time, due to the rather repetitive gameplay and the fact that its twelve levels aren't difficult to complete. Rushing around avoiding the nicely drawn aquatic sprites and picking up items is enjoyable, but there isn't really enough variety - some form of bonus screens where you have to do something other than collect things would have helped break up the action. As it stands James Pond is a fun game that you'll play loads when you first get it, but won't be one that you'll go back to in the coming months.

AmigaACE (Advanced Computer Entertainment)
Pros: Presentation is classy. Sound and graphics are top-notch. Excellent playability. Send commendations to the lab boys, Q.

Cons: Each level looks and plays pretty much like the last, therefore there's little urge to see what features and graphics appear later on.

Final Analysis: Initially lots of fun, but the repetitive nature of the game is ultimately its downfall.

For one thing, it's a "platform" game which involves very little actual platforming. The water-based setting allows for a few new ideas and these are mostly very good ones. The stages are quite large and mostly non-linear in their layout, and the environmental theme of the game has renewed relevance these days. I've always been keen on mission-based games, and those that comprise this one are very enjoyable to carry out. It's more than just a simple collect-'em-up too; the objectives are varied, and the stages can get quite complex. The difficulty curve is just right as well. Every time I play it I seem to get a little further. James Pond isn't perfect and can be quite frustrating now and then, and it pushes the Mega Drive's limits in no ways, but it's very pleasant for the most part, plus it feels pretty good saving the environment and all!

Loads of initial cute appeal, but really a pretty run-of-the-mill arcade runabout.
