A strange game

The Good
Jurassic Park takes place after the events of the first film and thus offers an original story. The graphics, music and sound effects really create a sense of being on an isolated tropical island with dinosaurs. The controls are simple to use and its nice to be able to learn some actual facts about dinosaurs through a series of full motion video clips that are scattered throughout the island.

The Bad
The action sequences and the full motion video reflect the severe hardware limitations of the Sega CD. The mixture of very different types of game play may turn off some gamers. Much of the game offers an adventure gaming format whereby you must explore the abandoned island and collect enough dinosaur eggs for storage before the time runs out. Yet, the game also mixes in some shoot 'em up, arcade sequences whereby you must kill or avoid certain dinosaurs or armed guards.

The Bottom Line
To the game designers credit, the CD edition is not simply a carbon copy of the Jurassic Park cartridge game. The Sega CD version shows off both the potential and severe limitations of the system. Many people may find the game play to be too weird to really enjoy. Fans of the franchise, who enjoy and excel in both puzzle solving adventures and fast paced shoot 'ems will enjoy the game the most. Patient gamers who are up for a tough challenge, which involves elements of graphic adventuring and arcade shoot 'em ups, should give this one a try.
