While some players may bemoan the eventual dip in mission variety attached to the game's narrative (and inherent in most games of this variety), the steady widening of geographical coverage across the islands does offer up plenty of interesting assignments and a seemingly never-ending succession of related side missions for the attainment of fresh vehicles and weaponry - although the continual forestry, jungle, dirt road surroundings may tarnish the shine somewhat. If that's the case, then simply hijacking a helicopter, taking it to its full ceiling capacity, and then parachuting back to the islands while drinking in the absolute beauty of the surroundings soon reiterates the classy power of Just Cause and washes out any dulling of the senses.

Just Cause is one of those amazingly fun, carefree games and doesn’t take itself too seriously. The action is hectic and breaks every law of physic and though the gameplay isn’t that varied, it’s still quite fun.

Few developers have been able to fully replicate the do-as-you-please style of gameplay that propelled Grand Theft Auto to the top of the charts. But if you think Just Cause is another me-too title that's hitched a ride on the GTA train, get ready to eat a delicious sandwich made of your own words.

Ja! Will ich eine Fortsetzung? Definitiv.

Overall, Just Cause isn’t the best game out there. I’ll warn anyone looking into it that it doesn’t offer the most original or engaging experience, but it’s a lot of fun to play. What you see is what you get: it’s a pretty shallow action game that doesn’t have an emotional story or memorable characters, but it’s a lot of fun to play. I can’t quite explain how cool it is to stand on San Esperito’s highest mountaintop above a layer of clouds and know that in just a few moments I’d be diving into those clouds, pulling the string and gliding hundreds of meters onto the top of a moving car. It simply has to be done for oneself. Definitely at the very least rent this one if you’re an Xbox or Xbox 360 gamer with a hankering for an action game, just don’t expect a gripping plot or original ideas.

As ambitious a project as Just Cause is, lives will not be changed by its presence. It's not pushing the medium forward - its nonsensical AI and air of illogical daftness put paid to that - and it's not going to dispel the conversative idea that videogaming is an asinine passtime. No, Avalanche's greatest achievement is that it has created an open, vehicle-based videogame that does not feel GTA in any way, shape or form, be it thematically or mechanically. This is the birth of a new franchise - a buggy, daft, hilarious and joyous franchise.

When you look at it more and more, the Desperado comparison works really well here. Action scenes and sweet gunplay make for a compelling first watch, but you can’t sit through repeat viewings of that film like you can others. Just Cause is the exact same situation; after you liberate the island and eliminate the dictator, there is simply no other reason to put the disk back in your system. The island looks pretty and there are plenty of attractions to see, but once you spend a little time there, you are ready to leave. Most players will be done with this game after eight or ten hours and wishing that instead of the goofy collection or liberation missions that were thrown in, the developers would have fleshed out the main story.

Sometimes things just promise to be awful lot better than they turn out. Take Lost, for example. It has all the ingredients to become the best TV show ever made, and certainly starts off that way. With a great premise and solid cast, it has hints of greatness throughout, yet somehow the writers keep conspiring to screw it up by endlessly padding things out, changing their minds and stringing us along into believing that something mind blowing is going to happen any time soon - just tune in next week to find out.

It’s not revolutionary and it’s gloriously over the top in places. It’s got a few graphic glitches and some cases of popping, sloppy controls now and then. But it’s a fun game and it’s what matters to me. There are side missions and a whopping big island chain to explore, there’s not much in the way of life compared to other games of this type and the level of destruction isn’t as impressive as Mercenaries but Just Cause wins bonus points for a fun inventive stunt system, totally mad physics and a secret agent theme that allows us to be a sky-diving, gun toting, lady-killing guy with a penchant for wearing black and sounding like El’Mariachi, more vehicles than you can shake a stick at and atmospheric real-time created weather and gorgeous graphical effects.

If you think about it, the world has sort of reverted to the 80's. MTV is showing music videos (albeit only on the internet!), the economy is spinning out of control, Latin America has again become "the enemy," and pop culture is diving into a pit of self-parody yet again. So maybe the Reagan era sensibilities of Just Cause are right on time. Either way, it's a fun ride.

There are a lot of exciting moments like this in Just Cause, the open-world title that puts you in the shoes of Rico Rodriguez, an American law enforcement agent tasked with the overthrow of the evil president of San Espirito. These exciting sequences are coupled with a tropical setting that’s unique in the sandbox game genre, some original ideas like your ever-present parachute, and a very welcome lack of conventions lifted from Grand Theft Auto. However, on the other hand, a few issues detract from the overall experience, making Just Cause more of a promising start than a real revelation.

Suspension of disbelief is such a fundamental part of the video game experience that we often take it for granted. Multiple lives and first-aid kits that instantly mend whatever ails you are conventions that we accept without batting an eye, even in games that purport to have realistic settings. That said, Just Cause is a visceral third-person action game with some outrageous action that will require an extra helping of that suspension of disbelief to be able to enjoy. But, if you can get past the infeasibility of a man hanging onto the tail of a flying jet with one hand, you might find a lot to like in Just Cause.

Just Cause is a fun game to play without having the obligations of completing missions in order to proceed through the various environments. The world is yours and any area can be accessible as well as any vehicle, location or weapon. Having a huge fun factor, this game will capture you for a week or till you kill the president. Ending the task will end the game as sooner or later you'll get bored of shooting, driving and gliding.
70
Xbox 360Video Game Talk
The main storyline is almost an afterthought as the entire affair only takes about six hours. The depth of the game is resultant from how much time you wish to spend doing boring side missions or hunting for little blue dots on the map. In their attempt to copy the GTA formula, Avalanche Studios left out quite a bit of the personality that makes a GTA clone successful. Beyond achievements, players have no reason to complete the extraneous tasks as there are absolutely no useful rewards at the endgame for doing so. The sheer boredom that envelops the gamer after the brief storyline finishes off just sucks the enjoyment out of completing the game. I can only recommend this 360 title for those still craving the GTA experience after finishing the wonderful Saints Row. It's worth a purchase at the $25 to $30 price point, but more likely a rental for the vast majority to knock out the main storyline and garner a few achievements.

Xbox 360Totally Gaming Network
In summary Just Cause is a “damn good”, “you can have a lot of fun with”, “stunts never become boring”, “experience not to be missed”... game. Nothing in Just Cause is hard to get to grips with and that makes it a perfect kick-ass-fu crazy action game that, even if you were to rent, you would not be disappointed with.

As it is, Just Cause is a game that will clearly divide anyone who plays it into two distinct camps; those that love it for what it is and those that hate it for what it isn't. Either way, you should consider a rental before committing to a specific camp. As an aside, I'd love to see what Avalanche Studios could do with the 007 license.

Overall, on the scale of sandbox games, JC falls somewhere between True Crime and GTA: Vice City. Rico Rodriguez’ San Esperito is definitely more impressive than Nick Kang’s Los Angeles, but the storyline is nowhere near the Vercetti’s Vice City.

Just Cause could have been so much better. It has really good ideas behind it, and a lot is actually executed well. It has a gorgeous world, great action, and a good hero, but the problems drag it down. A sandbox game like this you really expect to get about 25-30 hours out of, at least, but I was bored after less than half that. The story mode is great fun, but way too short. There is also no real incentive to do any of the side missions, but in a way, that's no bad thing. The numerous bugs are also irritating, and probably could have been removed with either a patch/a bit more development, but gamers got neither. "Just Cause" is DEFINITELY worth playing, but you might as well just play the story, so rent it first, rather than buy it, and if you still like it after completing the story mode, then definitely buy it.

Just Cause may follow in the footsteps of Grand Theft Auto but it does a pretty good job and without all the gang affiliations people were so riled about. You’ll have a fun time breaking the law to overthrow a government and not even know who you’re working for.

Eidos has high hopes for Just Cause, and on the face of it there's no reason it won't be a huge success. The game seems to have it all: a huge free-roaming world; stunning visuals; land, sea and air vehicles; and explosive combat. It's a hard package to resist, and at times it really is irresistibly good, but it's far from consistent. Sight seeing action junkies looking for another free-roaming game will find a lot to enjoy, but a few kinks prevent Just Cause from rising into elite territory.

Just Cause has all of the makings of a great sandbox game. It has a vibrant, open world with a multitude of environments to explore. There are a huge number of side quests to keep you occupied along with a slew of vehicles and weapons to aid you in your quest to see everything and blow it up. The trouble is that the deeper you delve into the game, the more shallow everything gets and the more prevalent the bugs and faults in the game become. There is fun to be had with Just Cause, but it doesn't last long enough to warrant more than a rental.

Just Cause was filled with a lot of great ideas. It had the potential to be an awesome game, but what comes across as unsurety on the part of the development team really hampers it. There are so many cool ideas here, and the layout for what could have been an even more interesting multiplayer than Saints Row goes to waste thanks to the poor execution. If you're looking for a more realistic-style sandbox action title, pick up Saints Row. Otherwise, save your money and wait for Crackdown.

Just Cause had plenty of potential, and in terms of the engine and the technology behind it, it delivers quite nicely. In addition, just looking at the crazy aerial stunts that Rico performs, the game comes off as looking rather spectacular.

Unfortunately, these fun elements simply don't gel well together, so the end product seems rather flat. That's the best way to describe it really. For a game that tries hard to create a flamboyant image for itself, Just Cause simply lacks the punch and the personality to truly deliver on that front. On the bright side, Avalanche does show a lot of potential. Hopefully, they will learn from their mistakes and come back with a stronger contender next time.

To be fair, the game has lots of great action thrills. Piloting a tank or APC against military targets is a joy. A great set piece in the game is chasing a train down on a bike. One mission has you leaping from sky down to a speedboat, leaping in, and chasing after three other boats similarly armed. The beautiful water effects only add to the great chase across the sunswept sea. Still, the flaws tend to kill the overall experience. It's a good rental, but if you're looking for a good GTA style game set in a Robert Rodrugiuez-esq setting, stick with Total Overdose. It's more fun.

PlayStation 2PSX Extreme
Just Cause is fun for a little while, and if you get sucked into the atmosphere and style, you just might finish it. But there are too many pitfalls that routinely impede your enjoyment, and while some of it is amusing, we have to realize we're chuckling at problems, not at parts of the game designed to be humorous. It's got a nice overall flavor to it, but the end result is a mostly unfulfilling experience highlighted by several uber-cool stuntman moves and a legitimate sense of freedom. It's just not worth the price of admission, and that holds true for all versions of the game, even the slightly better Xbox 360 and PC versions.

For gamers jonesing for a next-gen GTA, THQ and Volition already hooked you up with the surprisingly high-quality Saints Row. Just Cause does go in its own direction in a lot more ways, however. Problem is, they don't really help its cause much, and fail to spark the revolution its developers were hoping for.

If Arnold Schwarzenegger was cast as the main character of a game then I think we would end up with something that has much in common with Just Cause; a game of insane stunts, lots of explosions, an almost superhuman main character and of course some sexy ladies. However, although Just Cause ticks a lot of the right boxes, it is much closer to Jingle All the Way than it is the sheer excellence of Terminator 2.

Just Cause has all of the makings of a great sandbox game. It has a giant, open world with a multitude of environments to explore.
