Description
King of the Road is an improved version of
Hard Truck 2. The game simulates the life of long-haul truckers, delivering merchandise over large territory. You race other truckers and have to keep supply and demand in mind. There are different weather circumstances, and from time to time, you are invited to circuit races where you can earn a license to hire other truckers and start a company. Cash is used to upgrade your vehicle, acquire a new one, or to pay other drivers' salaries. The first company to own a 51% share in the delivery market, wins.
While driving, you have to keep track of incoming orders, the truck load and the state of your vehicle. Servicing and refueling at regular intervals is necessary, and you can invest in scanners, protection systems and other equipment. The CB radio is not only used to talk to other drivers, but also to negotiate with the mob and the police, who are always on your tail, with wild chases over county borders.
The main improvements over
Hard Truck 2 are the new refueling system in the simulation mode, different fuel prices, a revamped repair menu, better graphics, driving physics and collision objects, new equipment and gameplay balancing.
Networked multiplayer is available up to eight players.

Trivia
This game is often confused with
Hard Truck 2. Both were developed by
Softlab-NSK and they share the same engine and the larger half of the concept.
King of the Road, however, was never released in North America. This European variant has many fixes and steep improvements to the gameplay itself.
The original version was first released in Russia and was titled
Dal'noboyshchiki 2 and then
Hard Truck 2 in English. The European
King of the Road version was not released in the developer's home country until May 2003, when
1C Company published a special 2-disc edition, again with the title
Dal'noboyshchiki 2. That time, however, it was the Russian version of
King of the Road, patched to version 8.0. The second bonus disc of that edition contains screensavers, wallpapers, screenshots and movies of the game, as well as previews of
Dal'noboyshchiki 3, the sequel.
Ascaron was the first to publish the game in Western Europe in 2001, for the German market, but due to insolvency problems they could not do an English release.
JoWood took over, released an English version, and re-released the game in Germany in 2002 as well. The base version had been upgraded to version 1.3, but these improvements were not released as a separate patch for owners of the Ascaron 1.0 or 1.1 version.
A polish version was announced by
CD Projekt, but ultimately cancelled in August 2002.
The English version of KotR includes a free bonus CD with screensavers, wallpapers, trailers and demos of other games released by JoWooD.
