Some people don't like Kirby games, because they say they're too easy or that they're not cool enough. If you are one of those kind of gamers, I weep for you. If you don't play Kirby Super Star Ultra, you're missing a great game. It looks great, it plays great, and there's lots of variety. What more could you want?

But while these concepts are interesting, well-executed variations on pretty much the same concept, a lot of the excellent material gets repurposed in the later unlockable game types. In particular, bosses are plentiful, and the strategies never change. The Meta Knightmare Ultra mode essentially consists of repeating portions of the game you've already seen, but with an overpowered Meta Knight instead of Kirby. It's an issue further exacerbated by Kirby's inelegant level design; it's clever at times, especially when you need to use specific powers situationally -- but compared to something like the Mario games from that era, Ultra's filled with flat, wasted space that platforming vets won't have any trouble with.

Kirby Super Star Ultra is a perfect example of how to update a game. With its improved visuals, added cinematics, additional single-player content, new twists on the original's gameplay, and a competent multiplayer aspect Ultra delivers an excellent and modernized remake of a classic title. Kirby fans will surely not be disappointed and players who happened to miss the original on the SNES should definitely give this one a try.

For those of us with ADD, Kirby Super Star Ultra is a pretty well-rounded (pardon the pun) platformer for the DS. Its collection of games are short enough to constitute leisurely and casual play, but at the same time they’re satisfyingly addictive. The sub-games are a little bland, however, and leave one with the impression that they were included simply to adhere to incorporating the touch screen features on the DS version - not necessary and not really that exciting if you’re playing against the computer. I’d suggest opting to playing with a friend, although if you have a friend to play the game with, you might as well stick to the main collection as they are significantly more enjoyable.

Ultimately, your enjoyment of Ultra will come down to how difficult you like your games. Unlockable bonus games aside, the main adventure is easy to get through and while this might be suitable for younger gamers or anyone looking for some simple stress-free fun, anyone after a challenge will be disappointed. If difficulty isn't a problem, this offers some of the most pleasant platforming on the DS.

While it hardly makes up for the lack of a true new game from Nintendo, Super Star Ultra is a great port of a classic game. Everything that made the original Super Star has, for the most part, survived the journey, and luckily, most of the additions truly add to the game, rather than bloat it. Kirby Super Star Ultra is a package worth picking up, especially for those new to the series.

While Kirby Super Star Ultra comes jam-packed with all sorts of content, it’s a relatively short game that can be finished in less than three hours if you choose not to use up any time overplaying any of the game’s minigames. There are plenty of games and chapters to unlock, so sometimes it would definitely play to try everything out. If you haven’t played Kirby Super Star, this is a great remake that should definitely give you an experience—just don’t expect any of the features from the previous two Kirby games on the DS

All in all, Kirby Superstar Ultra is a great new entry into a very reliable series. I wouldn’t go as far to say that it is the new definitive entry in the franchise, but it is still a blast to play. The losses from Super Nintendo to Nintendo DS are overlookable, and the extra content rounds out the experience into a more complete game than the original. If you are familiar with other games from the pink puff, you should not be surprised by what you get for your money. Whether or not that value adds up to the price-tag is going to vary depending on who you are, but there are much worse things than an short but sweet adventure.

Kirby's third Nintendo DS adventure sits somewhere between the first two: it's not as creative as Kirby's Canvas Curse, but it's not as "by the numbers" formulaic as Kirby's Squeak Squad. It's definitely a fun, quality DS adventure, even if it didn't start out that way. The short and sweet adventure structure actually feels at home on the Nintendo DS, but the slightly easy level of difficulty might make this one a short-lived addition to your Nintendo DS library.

Kirby Super Star Ultra is a solid port of a 16-bit original. With graphics and sound that that seem true to the original, the game manages to maintain its charm and appeal. People who want to see what the fuss was about Kirby sometime ago can finally experience some of his classic gameplay (hey, 12 years is awhile ago!). That being said, as there seems to be nothing new, those who played the original may not want to take a walk down memory lane as the ride is over a little too quick. Regardless Kirby has charm of his own and I can’t help but recommend that people give this game chance.

Note that each of these modes contain unique levels and environments, as well as slightly different objectives (very slight). All of this is great, and will surely appeal to Kirby fans young and old. But there are a couple of minor issues to consider, starting with the sub-games. If you don’t like simple tap-the-screen-with-no-real-purpose mini-games, you won’t like these either. Second, in most of the modes, Kirby has the option to turn any ability into a fully functional ally. As cool as this is, it allows players to kick back and let the ally do all the work during a boss battle. That makes the game much easier than it already was, which is huge considering that this is a Kirby game, a series known for being easy to complete (Canvas Curse excluded). Also, most of the multiplayer features require multiple game cards, which is disappointing for a first-party gam

Kirby Super Star Ultra is a fantastic revisit to one of the Super NES's best 2D platformers. Fans of the genre who missed out on the original game will find a lot to love here, while fans of the original game will enjoy checking out the new material. However, seasoned Kirby players will probably plow right through this compilation within a few days. Whether or not it's worth the price of admission and required effort to get to that new material is left for you to decide, but as long as you don't mind the short overall experience and enjoy time attack modes, I think you'll be happy with a return to Popstar.

Kirby Super Star Ultra is decent fun for $40, but it’s not a must-own DS title by any stretch. Those who grasp tightly to their fond memories of the original can look forward to new CG cutscenes at the very least bookending each game (there are plenty more than that in Revenge) as well the aforementioned wireless play. We applaud Nintendo for delivering yet another acceptable enhanced remake, but we simultaneously beseech them to lock that back-catalog away so they can get back to work on shaking the foundations of gaming’s future. Pretty please.

Remakes and ports, they are what they are. You really can’t hate them because chances are that if the original hadn’t been awesome, it wouldn’t have been ported. I loved Kirby back when I was just a wee little geek, and I still love him just as much now. Kirby Super Star Ultra is a solid title that could have been just a little fresher while still keeping Kirby rad. If only the little cream puff could run up onto some baddies that were a little more hardcore, his abilities might finally outshine his amazing super-cuteness.

GameDaily
That sums up Kirby Super Star Ultra. You'll see what this game has to offer in a few hours and that's a generous estimate. We love Kirby, the colorful worlds he explores and the cheery music, but this aged SNES game can't compare to a true sequel with hours of content. Save yourself $34.99 and play one of Kirby's previous adventures.
