As a continuation of the previous Knytt games, Knytt Experiment was originally conceived as a large universe that kept expanding as people built new elements of the world based on the gameplay of the previous games. Instead, the developer eventually abandoned the project and turned it into co-lab environmental world creation project with no real goal or challenge.

Players guide little Knytt through different areas, all created by different users. Knytt can be moved around, climb walls and use a balloon to float to higher areas. Other functions have been removed. Sometimes coins can be collected, but these serve no purpose. Instead, the focus is on exploring the environment and accessing new areas.

Each side-scrolling screen, created by a different user, ends up in a different database: Normal, Experimental or Other Levels, to make sure a similar quality is maintained for each of the 3 sections. Players can refresh the world map to update it with newly-submitted areas.

Knytt Experiment Windows One of the more experimental areas
Knytt Experiment Windows A mine shaft (Normal)
Knytt Experiment Windows A detailed pirate ship (Normal)
Knytt Experiment Windows A very dark area (Other Levels)
