Commodore 64Computer and Video Games (CVG) (Oct, 1988)
It would be a great loss to the computer game hobby if puzzle and whodunnit games were totally eclipsed by the role playing fantasy type of game. Sure, these games are excellent in their own right - but they don't have the sheer weight of puzzlability that a good whodunnit style adventure can create. LA Crackdown and games like it are a lifeline for adventure enthusiasts.
Commodore 64Power Play (Sep, 1988)
The game is well structured for working through, discovering information, and should prove a testing challenge. The graphic sequences are simple and unimpressive. The sound effects are virtually non-existent except for the title tune.
DOSThe Games Machine (UK) (Sep, 1988)
Character interaction is limited to automatic conversations, and there is no facility to ask specific questions. This sums up the general feel of LA Crackdown - the player has too little control over the rookies actions.
Commodore 64The Games Machine (UK) (Oct, 1988)
The Commodore game plays similarly to the PC version (reviewed TGM 010 68%), although sound and graphics are slightly improved. Disk-access time is minimal, but unfortunately the program causes the drive to hammer something terrible when accessing. In fact the worry of the damage it may be causing to the heads outweighs the desire to play the game. It's not worth the risk.
