Description

Lament is a puzzle platformer controlling the girl Emma and it incorporates patterns of sounds to solve puzzles. Emma needs to move through different environments and she only has the ability to jump. Certain sequences contain creatures that need to be taken out according to a sound pattern. To do that she can step on a platform to freeze time. In most of these puzzles one or more creatures need to be taken out in the correct order and without touching anything else, or time becomes unfrozen and the sequence needs to be restarted. Usually successfully completing them opens up a barrier to proceed. When Emma dies, she immediately reappears near the beginning of the screen and there are no lives.

Other parts include jumping through parts of the screen. The game does not scroll sideways, but moves from one screen to the next. By jumping down in certain pits it is possible to reappear near the top. For some puzzles it is possible to jump on a platform to land at a higher part at the next screen. Later on in the game a double jump ability is introduced and from then on creatures at a greater distance from each other can be taken out with the jumping pattern. Other elements include keys to open up barriers, floating platforms that move when time is frozen, and freezing bullets of creatures to jump on them mid-air. After completing the game a time trial mode is unlocked.
