The Last Express

The Last Express is in many ways a truly classic adventure game, with its inventory puzzles, escalating plot and tried-and-true interface. However, its extreme nonlinearity, the inclusion of violent scenes, and a sense of being what is in reality a completely timed game set it apart from standard pure adventure fare.

Quite frankly, I haven't clenched my teeth this hard since 1994 when I was in labor with Mini Minnie! I also have not played one computer game for this many hours in a row in years. By the end of my train journey, poor Mini was penciling up signs for what she wanted and waving them beside my computer desk!

The Last Express does not look like a game with live actors at all. It looks like an art nouveau cartoon. If you don't remember, art nouveau is the style popular around 1914--one of the more famous artists of that period was Alfons Mucha, whose paintings and posters are well-known. The game creators achieved this cartoonish effect by taking the completed FMV sequences and processing them with a computer program that emphasized the contours and "flattened" the pictures. The result looks in my opinion quite nice--you can see for yourself from the screenshots.

What is most refreshing are the game's puzzles. They are mostly story driven. Hiding the body, disarming a bomb and stopping a runaway train are three of the puzzles. There are a few items to find and manipulate but one can count them on one hand. The Last Express is a new and better way of telling an interactive story and as such provides a role model for the gaming industry. It is highly original and richly deserves all the awards it will surely get.

Despite this, I would say that The Last Express is one of the most revolutionary games I have ever played. The simple fact that the story can be taken in a number of directions by a player offers a replay value that is lacking in most adventure games then or now. Chances are no two people will play the same game. The Last Express is also a must have for gamers who love to be sleuths, discovering agendas and secrets, or who enjoy learning about history. If this sounds like you, then this game is a must have, but clear your schedule as it takes between 50 and 60 hours to complete.

While I have not read Agatha Christie’s Murder on the Orient Express, I do certainly recognize an “inspired” work when I see one. Perhaps not as painfully obviously clear as in “Chaser” and “Red Faction” (both which were direct rip-offs of the good old Arnold movie “Total Recall” from the 80’s). But I know enough of the setting and atmosphere to speculate that this game recalls the classic beloved novel, reworked to the computer, 90’s style. The Last Express, involving Jordan Mechner of the Prince of Persia games, is a journey back in time to pre-war Europe, with the tensions, conflicts and peculiarities of the time, all taking place aboard the fabled Orient Express.

Jordan Mechner's development group has made an auspicious debut: it's a genuine pleasure to come across a game that's as smart, elegant, and well-crafted as The Last Express. With its classy, period look and challenging gameplay, it will satisfy all but those adventure gamers who do not enjoy playing in real time. Sure, it's not quite the same as traveling on the real Orient Express, but it's still a great ride. And it costs a lot less.

The Last Express is a quality production, but it's not for everyone -- the timed sequences and fighting sequences may turn off some adventurers, which is a shame because there is much here to enjoy. Mystery, political intrigue and romance set against a background of impending catastrophic upheaval, made all the more poignant because we know what is about to happen. As Robert Cath we can briefly influence the course of events on the Orient Express, but are powerless in the face of the gathering storm clouds outside. Why did this game remind me of the movie, Casablanca?

Die vielen Charaktere sorgen für einen sehr verzweigten Plot, und gerade Einsteiger vermissen konkrete Hinweise auf ihr Vorwärtskommen. Auch haben sich kleinere Ungereimtheiten eingeschlichen. So rufen Sie per Klingelknopf den Schaffner in Ihr Abteil, um ihn von seinem Sitz wegzulocken. Auf dem Gang kommt er Ihnen entgegen und grüßt Sie sogar noch höflich mit Namen - wandert aber fröhlich weiter auf Ihr Abteil zu. Wenn Sie über solche Details hinwegsehen und offen für ein etwas anderes Adventure sind, sollten Sie der aufforderung "Einsteigen und Türen schließen!" ruhig nachkommen.

Who would have thought that Jordan Mechner, the man behind such action classics as Karateka and Prince of Persia, would design one of the most innovative adventure games of the last few years? Upon closer examination, Mechner's involvement with The Last Express makes sense: Karateka was the among the first games to be emotionally engaging, with small cutscenes adding a narrative layer that was unheard of in the early Eighties. The Last Express is revolutionary in a similar way - through its use of real time and brilliant writing, the game ups the ante for storytelling in gaming. And if it weren't for a few gameplay issues, The Last Express could very well be among the best adventure games ever.

Eigenlijk is de indruk die ik van dit spel heb een beetje tweeslachtig. Enerzijds is dit wel een tof spel, maar aan de andere kant heb ik het gevoel dat het iets te vroeg is uitgebracht. Het loopt niet echt vloeiend en dat is spijtig want het vergalt een deel van het spelplezier. En dit is extra jammer omdat The Last Express toch een tof spel is, dat voortreffelijk van historische elementen is voorzien.

Vous avez rendez-vous à Paris avec votre ami Tailer Wittney pour prendre ce fabuleux train jusqu'à Constantinople. L'action se passe en 1914, à la veille de la première guerre mondiale. Malheureusement, vous arrivez en retard et c'est une amie qui vous permet de rattraper le train de justesse. Arrivé dans votre compartiment, vous découvrez votre ami assassiné sauvagement. Il va falloir mener l'enquête, sous les traits de votre ami Wittney. Et il n'y a pas que de gentils passagers dans ce train.

Wenn peinliche Drei-Phasen-Animationen, billige Ausprobier-Rätsel und einige krachige Spieldesign-Schnitzer nebensächlich werden, dann muß es sich schon um ein ganz besonderes Adventure handeln. The Last Express ist so ein Programm - verblüfend, was die unglaublich realistisch wirkende Echtzeit-Umgebung aus einem Minimalst-Adventure zaubert.Zum 80-Prozenter hat's for Broderbunds Zugnummer aber nicht gereicht - dafür ist die Fahrt zu kurz, der Leerlauf zu groß, der Marathonlauf durch die Abteile zu nervig und das Kampfsystem zu überflüssig.

I enjoyed playing this game for the atmosphere it presented, but felt that it was really created more to give the feeling of the environment than for puzzle solving. I believe that less choppy animation sequences and a different technique for saving games would have made this a stronger game.

In this Murder on the Orient Express knockoff, you — Dr. Robert Cath — have found a friend dead on the train and set off to find the killer. Though The Last Express doesn't take an Agatha Christie to crack the case, it does take the endurance of a locomotive to chug through the backtracking after reaching all kinds of dead ends.
