Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky is one of the finest JRPGs in the history of the genre, and that still holds true for its Steam debut. Even as it revels in nostalgia for its forebears, it forges ahead on its own path. Trails offers a thrilling adventure through one of the most complete and enthralling worlds ever rendered, and lets you take it alongside a cast of charming, affable heroes. Anyone looking for their RPG fix, be they fans of western or eastern design, will fall in love within seconds.

The Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky isn’t just a wholly brilliant example of the genre done justice – it goes the extra mile in crafting a lengthy game that also maintains its initial entertainment value right through to its end.

Trails in the Sky is the archetypal JRPG done to perfection. It doesn't set out to light the world on fire (at least not with this first entry), but it succeeds remarkably well at everything it tries to do. Diving into the series is an investment, to be sure, and the game moves at a slow pace, but the payoff is so worth it that I cannot help but recommend this game to all but the most disillusioned of RPG fans.

The Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky bietet wenig Neues, macht aber so ziemlich alles richtig.

Playing Trails felt like taking a step back in time in the best way possible. With the focus on a coherent story and characters, as well as a unique blend of gameplay styles rooted in oldschool RPG goodness, any fan of either genre or even a curious newcomer owes it to themselves to pick up this title.

Grab Trails In The Sky if you want an RPG that lasts a long time or if you want to treat yourself to something new with funny dialogue, an interesting battle system or a cool character customization system. If you’re looking for quick fun or a more aggressive style game that’s light on reading, look elsewhere.

The cliffhanger on which this first installment of Trails in the Sky ends served its purpose of getting me to eagerly await the next chapter, which makes sense when the story was originally conceived as a single massive title. Japanese developers may not use the PC much even now, but Falcom is the exception to prove the rule, and hopefully more of its output will become accessible for the rest of the world soon. I didn't love this game with every fiber of my being, but I certainly had a good time throughout, which is more than I can say for some titles.

Ultimately, if you're a fan of JRPGs and you own a PC, I'd highly recommend picking up The Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky. Although it starts off slow and for the most part it is fairly easy, as well it does end on a huge cliffhanger, but the writing for characters and the worldbuilding are so good that everyone should at the very least give this game a chance, especially if you're a fan of Working Designs games like Lunar or Grandia, and after playing this game I couldn't be more excited for part two, which hopefully will see a release sometime in the near future.

Aside from the fact that the game includes little to no spoken dialogue and it can get rather confusing at times figuring out where you need to go during quests, I had a good time playing Trails in the Sky. Sure, by today's standards the visuals can be seen as rather dated in comparison, but as a child of the 90's, this the kind of stuff I personally love and admire so long as it is done right, and with the amount of depth this game has and how well the story picked up admittedly after its slow start, I can't find any real faults worth mentioning. This is a very solid RPG that PSP owners would really benefit by picking it up - you'd be hard pressed to find a more value-driven game for your Sony handheld.

Trails in the Sky is a game that will remind fans of traditional RPGs why they fell in love with the genre in the first place, while the accessible gameplay and well written story make it easy to recommend for those looking to experience the genre for the first time.
PSPIGN (Apr 04, 2011)
The Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky is the first in what promises to be a strong, entertaining trilogy. Although this first chapter is not the most original ever made, like any good JRPG it offers amusing writing, dynamic combat, interesting tasks, an absorbing narrative, and hours upon hours of gameplay. And while the game's 50/50 balance between combat and story may not be to everyone's taste, its charm and overall entertainment value make it well worth the investment.
PSPRPG Land (Mar 30, 2011)
For JRPG fans, Trails is a small grail, dipped in the waters of everlasting JRPG-ness. Drink deeply and be rejuvenated. For western RPG fans, you aren’t the audience. For people looking for entertainment, it’s a very good game with some pretty serious flaws that will eventually be overlooked. I did have fun playing through Trails in the Sky, and recommend the title to anyone looking for a lengthy RPG with lots to do. In terms of design, the game is lacking – but it doesn’t make the game unplayable, and the times I wound up enjoying myself were greater than the times I did not. I do look forward to the Second Chapter, which makes the game – something to be played as entertainment – a success.

WindowsDiehard GameFan (Aug 13, 2014)
The Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky is an updated port of the PSP game of the same name, which itself was an updated port of a Japanese PC game. The visuals have been enhanced with support for higher resolutions, plus the translation has been cleaned up in places to make it more consistent with its followup. The story is very engaging, even if it has something of a slow start, and battles have enough strategic nuance to them that they’re enjoyable throughout the entirety of the game. There are some features, such as the monster book that have yet to be patched in, but even in the state it’s in, I can’t recommend a purchase enough. Especially since doing so is the only way we’ll see more of this franchise stateside. Bring on the Second Chapter!
