Lemmings 3D

A great new look, plenty of control options, and lots of levels that'll keep you busy for weeks. The controls may be a little awkward, even for die-hard Lemmings fans. 3D Lemmings is an addictive puzzler that's a bit out of the norm.

Sorry folks, but for this game the bad news is that it is just as addictive as its honoured ancestors. However, if you have played Lemmings before you may need to give yourself some time to get used to it. Be generous, it's worth it. Still, it may also be that this one is not for everyone. It probably best suits the most dedicated Lemmings fans. You really do need a good store of tenacity. On the other hand, if you have never played Lemmings before and are considering trying it, I would recommend a different approach. Indeed, I strongly suggest that you hunt around and find one of the earlier versions and get yourself up to speed on that before you take the plunge and tackle this one.

Aus dem possierlichen Geschicklichkeitsspiel von einst ist nun endgültig ein toughes Strategiespiel geworden. Beim Anblick der unförmigen Lulatsche denkt man wehmütig an die niedlichen Pixel-Kerlchen von 1991 und ihre herzzerreißenden "Oh no"-Sprengungen zurück.

Pour tout vous avouer, j'étais pour ma part un peu sceptique quant à l'intérêt d'un nouveau Lemmings. Pourtant, malgré ce préjugé défavorable, Lemmings 3D a réussi à m'enthousiasmer ! N'est-ce pas là la meilleure des preuves de la qualité du soft ?

Lemmings . . . more Lemmings . . . bigger Lemmings . . . and now 3D Lemmings! As it can be understood from the title, this is a sequel to the previous Lemming games. 3D Lemmings by Psygnosis is transforming these small, short-tailed, arctic rodents from two dimensions to three dimensions which makes it more fun and virtual to play.

Kritikpunkte gibt es nicht viele: Die Spielgrafik hätte ruhig in Super VGA sein dürfen, eine zoombare Übersichtskarte wäre oft hilfreich und wirkliche Neuerungen fehlen. Ansonsten aber ist 3D Lemmings eine spaßige Herausforderung für alle Tüftelfreunde.

As a long-time Lemmings fan, it's great to see them grow into the third dimension. The masses have been rendered in 3-D with impressive accuracy. Adjusting to the unlimited view and camera control can be a shock for the unsuspecting. The mazes hold the same classic challenge and most importantly, it feels as if you are still playing a Lemmings title and not a Doom clone with green-haired characters. Previous Lemmings fan, rejoice.

3D Lemmings is a unique puzzle game where you decide the ultimate fate of dozens of foolish, furry-footed rodents. As lemmings tend to walk in a straight line, even if it means certain death, you must assign them such positions as turners, blockers, and diggers as they traverse dangerous levels containing trampolines, springs, and rope slides.

Unfortunately, some things are simply meant to be rudimentary. 3-D Lemmings is a good trick, but for the most part, the added complications work against the simple charm of this game.

The graphics are nice enough, with the simple, colorful backgrounds and detailed structures, but compared to something like Jumping Flash! it looks a little barren. The control is easy to use, just point the cursor and assign tasks. The focus here is on strategy and gameplay, and Lemmings 3D certainly delivers.

Still, if you liked Lemmings, or just like puzzle games in general, then you may like Lemmings 3D. Once you get the hang of it, it can be pretty addicting, but the frustration level remains throughout the entire duration of the game. It's just a bit too hard and the camera system is very tricky to use. But, if you like highly difficult and frustrating games (and you have a lot of patience), then this is the one for you.

Lemmings 3D barely looks like it's earlier cousin. Lemmings come toward you, walk away from you and crawl under you, but the 3D view is confusing. Corny music offers apt accompaniment, but the hapless controls and over-abundant menus are the final nightmares. Call the SPCA - cruelty to animals just assumed digital form.
