LHX: Attack Chopper

"LHX Attack Chopper" läßt das Herz eines jeden Flugsimulator-Fans höher schlagen. Zwar gibt es einige klitzekleine Patzer in der Flugtechnik (kein Rückstoß beim Abfeuern von Waffen, kein "Luftkissen-Effekt" beim Schweben über dem Boden), aber vier Hubschrauber, einstellbare Schwierigkeitsgrade, unterschiedliche Einsatzgebiete und viele ausgetüftelte Missionen machen das wieder wett. Zu der oppulenten Auswahl an Aufträgen, die für langen Flugspaß bürgt, kommt noch die rasend schnelle 3-D-Grafik, die selbst unter VGA, höchster Detailstufe und einem XT nicht allzusehr in die Knie geht. Man merkt deutlich, daß die Programmierer von LHX ihr Handwerk verstehen.

Despite the ease of entry, the game is still very difficult to play (some would say this was a fair reflection of my skill at playing sims, though). Even in EGA mode the graphics are very detailed, with a good use of shading on the fast moving, filled polygons. At £40 this game, like all PC products, is not cheap. However, compared with similar products, LHX does represent very good value for money.

I must admit it took me a bit of time to get into LHX Attack Chopper. At first it looked like F-22 with the best bits but out, but with a little perseverance I had to change my mind. The control system is a little tricky, with all the functions so close together and it was inevitable that some of the features of the PC version would be left out. What remains, though, is a damn fine combat game, made all the better for the varied and well though out missions it offers. My favourite involves rescuing POWs from a remote camp with the ack-ack fire coming from all sides. The challenge of all five skill levels is massive. The idea of altering the viewpoint, which was a bit of a gimmick in F-22 is enhanced considerably here. With a bit of practice you'll soon be seeing yourself strafing a gun emplacement from above and watching it explode from close-range.

So is LHX Attack Chopper worth the 40 quid? The variety of missions help to keep you hooked, as do the different gamescapes and the choice of helicopters to fly. Playing the game is both satisfying and compelling. You really get a feeling of achievement when you've successfully completed a mission. Flight control may not be realistic, but thankfully the visuals are. In short, EA has done the biz. You can forget Microprose's Gunship, LHX Attack Chopper is now the best heli-sim on the market.

Während viele Simulations-Programmierer auf der Suche nach Neuheiten sind (siehe "Gunboat" in dieser Ausgabe), haben die Experten von Electronic Arts auf Altbewährtes zurückgegriffen - Helikopter. Brent Iverson, der Programmierer der DPaint II-Versionen für IBM- und Apple IIGS-Computer, wollte nicht nur eine simple Hubschraubersimulation - etwas Besonderes mußte es schon sein. So vereinte er gleich vier schnittige Hubschrauber in seinem Programm "LHX Attack Chopper".

LHX Attack Chopper has many good points and virtually nothing to fault it - except maybe the lack of a strong victory sequence. Looks like you'll have to get a few friends and a six-pack round for your own celebrations when the missions are finally complete.

LHX Attack Chopper is a highflying Genesis combat flight sim. If you're a real video pilot, you're used to polygon graphics. So, fire this cart up and blast some sand. have you got the chops for Attack Chopper?

Wer vom Mega Drive eine möglichst realistische Simulation erwartet, der überfordert das kleine Maschinchen. Anders ist die Lage, wen man LHX Attack Chopper als originelles 3-D-Ballerspiel betrachtet. Dann können die durchaus flotte Grafik und der ansehnliche Digisound schon eher überzeugen. Und dann kommen wir mit Steuerkreuz und Feuertaste prima klar.

Ostensibly a simulation of helicopter combat, it enjoyed more popular success than this reviewer thought it deserved, particularly considering its highly unrealistic flight model.
