DescriptionThe Fall is the first game in a trilogy where the protagonist is artificial intelligence called A.R.I.D. It is part of a high-tech combat suit worn by a character called Colonel Josephs and uses a female voice. It activates itself after crashing on an unknown planet and since the user of the suit does not respond, her routines immediately kick in, and she seeks medical attention to save the pilot. Since the AI has full access to the suit functions, she can take over control. The game is played in a 2D side-scrolling environment. The suit can be moved left or right and it can jump as well. The environment can be examined using a flash light where the beam can be guided in any direction. It highlights interactive parts of the world, which can then be interacted with. Interactions include conversations with multiple dialog options, interacting with computers and tools, examining the environment and picking up objects.
The majority of the game plays like a classic adventure game. Through careful observation puzzles need to be solved. Items are stored in an inventory. They do not need to be combined, but are used in the environment to progress. Through conversation options, often with computer systems, progress can be achieved that way as well. There is also a very different side of the game, played with action elements for several parts. Initially ARID is restricted through her own routines, but by bringing her pilot in dangerous situations, emergency routines can be triggered permanently, opening up the options to use and upgrade a gun, activate camouflage and so on. In these sequences robots need to be fought, using cover in the environment and timing attacks carefully. Just like the flash light the gun can be aimed in any direction. There is a shield that regenerates over time and a limited amount of life support (health). It is possible to die and then the game returns to an earlier checkpoint. These action sequences are mandatory and require quick reflexes to complete. There is an amount of stealth as well. Once the camouflage option is activated it is possible to hide in the environment and unaware enemies can be taken out from behind.
Most of the game however is based around puzzle-solving. It is story-driven and often focuses on how ARID struggles with her internal instructions combined with the directive to save the pilot. In some situations this shows her inability for nuance or lies. A Caretaker who now controls the facility sees her as faulty and aims to refurbish her. A large part of the game for instance shows how ARID needs to pass tests in unique ways to show her proficiency as a household robot, to show her willingness to comply. There are also many other dangers next to the Caretaker, such as security robots, fish, slugs and poisonous fungi. Much of the story and the facility's background is revealed through notes and conversations with computer systems.
