DescriptionGroundskeeper 2, the sequel to Groundskeeper, is a 2D, single-screen shooter shown from a side view. The female protagonist winds up in the middle of an invasion of robots from outer space. The game consists of several single-screen environment linked together through portals. The game encourages multiple playthroughs, as reaching certain scores unlocks new environments, weapons and items that are then added into the mix for the next game, providing more help to progress and more variety. The order of the environments is changed for each session. When a new target is reached, a short cut-scene is shown, providing story elements and what is unlocked.
Controls are limited: the character can move left and right, shoot and jump. Enemies spawn from both directions and there is also danger from above. Gradually new weapons are introduced such as a laser gun, triple guns, and a rocket launcher and items such as a shield, a powerful lightbeam and an item to slow down time. The better guns can only be used for a short time and they spawn as power-ups in the environment. Enemies leave behind yellow bits that need to be collected before they disappear. They add to the progression and count as the main score. The character has nine lives and certain enemies drop hearts to replenish them.
The goal in an environment is generally to survive until a portal is opened up to move to the next area, based on the number of bits that have been collected. Instead of moving into the portal right away, it is also possible to continue playing in the environment to collect more bits, but it gradually gets harder. When a new area is reached the character starts over again with nine lives.
