Second Life Trivia (Linux)
Second Life plays a major role in the CSI: NY episode Down the Rabbit Hole (Episode 5 of Season 4). The Head CSI, Mac Taylor (played by Gary Sinise), has to play the game to solve the case.
In October 2006, the international press agency Reuters opened an in-game agency in Second Life. The reporter Adam Reuters (Adam Pasick) provides press coverage about in-game events, the currency, and other subjects, from inside the game. The website can be found in the related links section.
On 6th September 2006, the development team discovered hackers had gained access to the game's database. Some of the unencrypted customer information stored in the database was compromised, and encrypted account passwords and payment information may have been retrieved. The system was shut down until the exploit was discovered and all the passwords were invalidated, forcing all users to enter a new password.
Second Life is one of the few MMOGs to give the player complete freedom to play, live and to create, only limited to the game's mechanics. This is similar to Habitat, one of the pioneers in the genre.
