Edge
It’s a multiplayer riot, a visual landmark, a feat of engineering, and one of the most charming games ever made. But even those accolades are dwarfed by its scope, its potential, and the apparent endlessness of them both. What’s more, it sees the pariah of this generation, Sony, publishing at the height of its powers. Not since the early days of PlayStation has that troubled brand stood for – and fostered – such a daring, transcendent, magnificent piece of work.

Edutaining Kids
Overall Little Big Planet is a game worth buying if you own a PS3 and want a good game to play with the family, as it can be picked up by young children and adults alike. The only minor problem we can see with the game for families is that some of the later levels, and the level creator in particular, may be too complicated for younger children. Of course, for some, it's a creative, healthy challenge. Despite this, the game remains great fun for all ages and would be a very strong addition to any family’s game library.

Wham! gaming
There are a number of great titles being released this holiday season, but LBP should be right at the top of every PS3 owner's list. Not only is it one of the most original games to be released in a long time, it's the single best title on the system so far. Buy it.

The Review Busters
Talk about a game that becomes more of a bargain everyday. No, I'm not saying LittleBigPlanet is getting cheaper, I'm talking about the great combination of a rather good platformer with a gigantic and fast-growing list of user-generated levels. If you've been teetering on the edge of buying a PS3, then LBP might just be the game to get you to take the plunge. Sure, it does look like a children's game, but the beauty of it is that you can make it to be nearly any game you wish. This is a must-buy, even if you don't really want to make your own levels. Even with the few small problems, I'm giving LBP a 10 out of 10 simply because few games have grabbed my attention like this over the past few years.

LittleBigPlanet is one part floaty platformer, two parts charm, and several thousand parts game-and-level creation tool. By allowing users to create and share the levels they've built, and by providing an intuitive front-end that allows players to quickly find the coolest levels, LittleBigPlanet excels whether you fancy yourself a bedroom game designer or if you just want to play the coolest things that others have built.

HonestGamers
On one hand, this is a community based around the free sharing of ideas and art. On the other it's an incredibly addictive platforming system. Together, this is the reason to own a PS3.

UGO (UnderGroundOnline)
On the whole, though, you’d have a hard time not seeing the brilliance behind LittleBigPlanet. It truly puts the games development tools in the hands of users, such that a group could band together and make their own version of LittleBigPlanet 2 if they so wished. That’s pretty uncharted territory for anyone outside of the PC modding space, and we can’t wait to see what the world at large comes up with.

Digital Chumps
For those who can appreciate where games have been and want a glimpse of the future, you'd be hard pressed to do any better than LittleBigPlanet. In a way it feels the years we’ve all invested in gaming have finally paid off with a unique appreciation for this wildly ambitious title. Creating a level can be a long, laborious path, but yields an incredible sense of satisfaction upon completion. You can one look at some of the user created levels and, finally, be conscious of the time and effort that went into constructing it, and then appreciate it as a piece of interactive entertainment. I can't think of any other game that's chosen to explore interactivity through that particular paradigm. LittleBigPlanet, unlike any other piece of current generation software, will change the way you play games. Don't even worry about telling your friends, just let them play it.

Playstation Illustrated
I can't really imagine anyone giving LittleBigPlanet a shot and not liking it. This should be the game of the 2008 holiday season. The only reason it won't be is because it is only available on a single system. However, LittleBigPlanet could be the game to buy a PS3 for.

LittleBigPlanet is a creative person's wonderland, providing the reconciliation that eccentric and unique titles aren't always lost in the status quo. It had a huge amount of hype surrounding it and it has delivered for the most part, as it is anything but not an ordinary experience and is a real blast to play with friends. The online community is brimming with endlessly different styles of maps, as each of the creators' personalities are poured into the fun of constructing them. LittleBigPlanet will undoubtedly keep you up at night, constructing the next big hit for the community - and if you don't care for that then you can still play the plethora of maps being produced by countless others. This really is a title that needs to be a part of your collection and an experience that you need to be a part of.

Darkstation
In short, LittleBigPlanet is the best game I’ve played all year. It is an extremely fun platformer with stunning graphics not to mention the most extensive level creation tool I’ve ever seen. With an online community there is no telling what people will come up with, but from what I saw in the beta there are definitely some talented people looking to try it out. If you have a PS3 and even moderately like to have a good time, then do yourself a huge favor and run out and buy this game. You will not regret it for a second, and I would have to say this is a strong Game of the Year contender in my book.

In the purest sense of the phrase, and when directly compared to greats in the genre, LBP is not a perfect platformer. Nevertheless, the developers should be applauded for creating a profoundly personal work that still overtly appealing to the audience at large. But even though it is not the best platformer out there, the game can quite easily be classed as something entirely original for the genre, casting off a brand new tangent filled with wondrous sights and provocative ideas that are enchantingly imaginative and creative enough to be considered truly exceptional. Ultimately, it is one of the few games that could honestly be considered all things to all people, and as a result should be ceaselessly playable for years to come. If that is not the sign a great game, then I really don’t know what is.

LittleBigPlanet is a breath of fresh air in an industry laden with MOTS syndrome. Media Molecule has created an amazingly fun and deep game that will allow people to create their own games and explore the creations of others.

Thunderbolt Games
LittleBigPlanet is much more than simply a game or even a tool, it’s an experience. The sack people are an infectiously charming bunch and as soon as you’ve settled in you’ll want to stay for the foreseeable future. Like any other place LittleBigPlanet has its faults, jumping and plane shifting will take some getting used to and occasionally frustrate but they’re small blemishes on an otherwise Utopian world. After all, even the sack people know perfection is boring.

Gaming Age
What else can be said? LittleBigPlanet was aiming extremely high, and Media Molecule came exceptionally close to hitting the mark. There are a few gameplay issues, the Create mode still has a few glitches and the online servers aren't quite doing their part at the moment, but the overall package and potential is unbelievable. We will probably not find another uniquely enjoyable, family friendly and completely creative game in the near (or possibly distant) future. Sackboy is here to stay, and yes, fun has indeed overcome.

This has been a banner year for innovation in 2D platformers, first with XBL's Braid and now Little Big Planet. If MGS4 wasn't enough to encourage a PS3 purchase, Little Big Planet should help close the deal. There is nothing like it on the other systems, nor is there likely to be any time soon. The perfect game really, you can play it alone, family friendly so you can play with the kids, play it with family, play online with friends, tons of innovation, many hours of game play due to level replayability and planet creation/online functionality. And for those who complain that video games are a waste of time and do not encourage creativity, I urge you to take a look at what is being created by Little Big Planet's user community.

The A.V. Club
In fact, LittleBigPlanet is banking on the hope that a new generation of auteurs will expand Sackboy's horizons by sharing new levels via the PlayStation Network. Like an MMO, the success of this massively multi-creator game depends on a large base of passionate players—and on the crowd's ability to find side-scrolling masterpieces amid the inevitable chaff. It remains to be seen whether LittleBigPlanet will fulfill its promise, but the sandbox is so much fun, it's hard to imagine that the kids won't come out and play.

The most important lesson I learned in high school came from my philosophy teacher, citing Leo Tolstoy: Art is infectiousness. Never before in gaming have I seen a better example of such infectious joy, infectious creativity, and (even at this early stage) an infectiously excited community. Yes, the level editor has its quirks, and the movement planes can be finicky -- but I don't care about perfection when I'm having this much fun. And the longer it's out, the better it'll become. I, for one, can hardly wait.

There's really nothing I can say other than this: if you own a PS3 and you don't buy LittleBigPlanet, you are robbing yourself of one of the most unique gaming experiences ever designed. It's one of those games that leaves an indelible mark on the industry and I expect it will lead to some tremendous things, not only in terms of the levels and objects that users and companies create but in terms of how we think about and approach gaming. But that's a conversation for another day. Right now, all you need to know is that it's amazing, it's fun and it'll leave a smile on your face that won't go away for a long while.

But Media Molecule are ready – ready with updates, ready to support a community bursting with ideas for their LittleBig creation. As of now, with the game levels, the incredible physics, the create mode, the endless patchwork charm, LittleBigPlanet is a game in the upper echelon of greatness. With a fully fledged, committed community providing downloadable levels of inspired genius on a daily basis, however, this title could be projected into the stratosphere of sheer, uncontainable awesome.

Little Big Planet is just what Doctor Sony ordered: universally appealing gameplay with an appealing everyman hero that is connected to streaming delivery of new content. Sony should be lauded for such a gamble, and Media Molecule should be praised. This is a rare toy that has the capacity to inspire the inventor, the explorer, and the gamer.

LBP is one of the most important games to be released this decade. A tall order with the hype machine running overtime for the game but the way it reinvents how video games are played is sure to have lasting effects indefinitely. It is impossible not to fall in love with all the charm LBP oozes. Playing with friends and swapping levels is sure to intoxicate even the most jaded gamer and make them feel like they were just picking up the controller and experiencing the same sense of curiosity and amazement the first time they set eyes on a video game. Any problems with LBP are negligible and fade into the background as you are pulled into a beautiful world that captures the essence of what it means to be a gamer. LittleBigPlanet is a masterpiece.

It’s so satisfying to finally have a game that not only lives up to the hype but exceeds it so many ways it’s almost unfair. If you haven’t guessed by now, LittleBigPlanet is one of those games. The pre-made levels are a blast and offer some of the most creative and awe-inspiring experiences you’ll ever have in a game. The level editor contains enough options for us to create entire games for the rest of our lives. And the online community means an endless supply of content and playability. If Metal Gear Solid 4 wasn’t reason enough to pick up a PS3, you have absolutely no excuse now.

Stephen Fry, The Go! Team, and Sackboy, what more could you possibly want. Undoubtedly one of the finest games in recent years, LittleBigPlanet deserves every single shred of a 10. You won't find a more polished or rewarding videogame this year, and for quite some time we'd imagine. Amidst Gran Turismos and Metal Gear Solids, LittleBigPlanet is finally the reason you need to invest in a PS3 - if you've already got one make sure to pick this up immediately.

LittleBigPlanet is quite an incredible game, it’s original, fun, creative and best of all sociable. The hype machine was at full power for LittleBigPlanet, however the energy was not wasted because this is one game that more than lives up to the anticipation for it’s launch.

LittleBigPlanet is an absolute triumph. This is innovation at its finest, and I hope the options presented in this game open the eyes of many other developers in the future. By putting creative control in the hands of the player, it becomes a much more intimate and personal experience. When I started the game, I had nothing but cardboard walls in the main hub area. By the end, they were plastered in pictures of me and my friend's Sackboys in our various costumes, pictures I had taken with my Playstation camera, and stickers and objects we had collected throughout the levels. It had become my videogame, not a predetermined endpoint thought up by developers. Every single person that owns this game will have their own moments, own creative input, and own connection to the characters and stages. It's a milestone in gaming, and it will be offering new experiences for years to come.

IGN UK
Despite some minor missteps, LittleBigPlanet is an absolute triumph of imagination and creativity. Its core conceits of accessibility and social play make its already ample charms even more endearing, producing a game that’s at once familiar and quite unlike anything that’s come before. It’s a celebration of inspiration and human interaction and a hugely welcome, utterly invigorating experience among usual roster of nihilistic shooters jostling for shelf space this Christmas. It’s like Bagpuss and LEGO and nostalgia met at the pub and invited everyone along -- and if the big grins and warm fuzzy feelings around the office are anything to go by every time we turn it on, LittleBigPlanet deserves all the recognition it can get.

It's a great time to be a gamer, and with a game like LittleBigPlanet part of the PlayStation 3's portfolio it's just gotten a lot better. If you haven't made up your mind on a purchase of LBP yet, then allow me to convince you; not owning LittleBigPlanet and being a PlayStation 3 owner should be a crime against, well...something. Media Molecule has created a game that'll go down in videogame history as one of the best gaming achievements ever, and you'd be extremely foolish to pass this up. There is absolutely nothing out there that can give you this much bang for your buck.

LittleBigPlanet makes the most of the PS3 capabilities, whether in terms of the SIXAXIS controller or with the graphic prowess of the console. Is this a must-have game for the PS3? Absolutely.
96
GameNorth
It’s really quite simple: LittleBigPlanet is one of the most unique gaming experiences to ever grace a video game console. It’s an empty canvas that challenges you to explore the furthest reaches of your imagination and beyond. It’s a world in which you create all the rules – no matter how absurd – as well as the colourful creatures that are going to enforce them. LittleBigPlanet is more than just a game – it’s a gaming medium.

Promised a lot, delivers it all. A fantastic platformer on the surface but there's so much more to discover. PS3's best game? Yup.

Good Game
When a lot of people say, “suitable for all ages,” they mean it's a kids game and adults can tolerate it. This is truly enjoyable for everyone, and a great one for other people to jump in for some co-op. I also think the artwork, both visual and audio deserve another mention, as clearly a lot of care has gone into it. 9.5/10 from me.

This game belongs in every single PS3 owner's collection. It's that good. It's also, again, worth buying a PS3 for, but the bottom line is few games will ever be this creative, charming and flat-out wonderful. Yes, ever.

LittleBigPlanet is innovation at its finest. It’s beautiful, hilarious, completely unique, and incredibly fun. You can’t afford to miss it.

IGN
As you can see, I had a ton to say in this review, but that's because there's a ton to this game. LittleBigPlanet is a massive game, one that is essentially two parts intertwined so well that they're practically inseparable. Media Molecule has created a brilliant platformer, and then given you the tools to recreate the whole thing over again, or better yet, to create your own ideas from scratch. It's not perfect - - the controls could be tighter, automatically shifting between planes can be problematic, the editor isn't quite as robust as you might hope -- but what's there is nothing short of astounding. If you own a PlayStation 3, you cannot miss this. If you don't have a PS3 yet, this is the reason to get one.

Meristation

Buy it! LittleBigPlanet may very well be the system seller that Sony is hoping for this Christmas. So if you don’t have a PS3 yet, now would be a good time to get one…then get LittleBigPlanet.

LittleBigPlanet is not only one of those games that reminds us that play can be enjoyable without dealing with weighty narratives or overly visceral violence. It's also one of the most charming titles around, offering much to those who are kids at heart, regardless of whether they want to play, create or do both. At the end of the day if you can’t find at least something to like about LittleBigPlanet then your problem is plainly obvious. You’ve forgotten how to have fun.
95
Game Informer Magazine
LittleBigPlanet’s design is so clever that even if it were just the single-player story mode, I’d still recommend it to anyone. But the game’s greatest achievement is how its multiple layers feed into each other. It’s easy for co-op buddies to jump in and out of your single-player game, and all the while you’re unlocking objects you can use in the creation mode. The whole experience is seamless, and it sets a new standard for how different modes can come together. In fact, I think LittleBigPlanet sets a lot of new standards that other titles will be striving to emulate in the coming years.

Worth Playing
LittleBigPlanet is a fantastic game. It's a great platformer with incredible artistic direction and sound, and with some great gameplay to back it up. While the main game is short and can sometimes be a little hard to control, it remains a ton of fun to play, and the fantastic level creator means that as long as LBP has a community, there will always be new levels to play, giving this game a seemingly endless replay value. It's not flawless, as the controls can and will frustrate you as you play, but everything else is just so much fun and so well done that you should not hesitate to play this game, even if you have any remote interest in it. This is certainly one of the PlayStation 3's finest games and an excellent addition to anyone's video game collection.

GameSpot (Belgium/Netherlands)
94
Gamer 2.0
While LittleBigPlanet’s launch may have been a bit rough with the recall and such, the game itself definitely lives up to the hype with a very enjoyable story campaign and has almost limitless potential in the level creator tools for the community aspect of the game. If platformers aren’t your thing and a heavy emphasis on community involvement doesn’t seem to excite you, a rental or complete ignorance of the game may be best for you, though you may risk your ability to have fun by not giving this game a chance. If Media Molecule can give the game great support, there should be no reason for this community to die anytime soon, especially with the creativity they’ve shown in the beta and the short amount of time the servers have been live since launch.

GameTrailers
It seems the web 2.0 revolution has been televised--and in burlap no less. LBP lives up to its promise of playing, creating, and sharing. It’s a strong 2D platformer that darts into the shadow of trouble once in awhile, but it’s ultimately redeemed by its daring design. You’ve never played another game like it. Rome wasn’t built in a day, and it will take longer to make a superb level than most will want to spend, but finally those pages of graph paper from your more optimistic days can come alive.

So... where does it all end? Well, this is the nice part - and something of a journalistic get-out-clause - we just don't know. LittleBigPlanet is one of the most inviting game world's ever imagined, the concept is a masterstroke, the implementation slick. Media Molecule are also promising enhancements still to come, and alongside epic amounts of user-generated content (assuming players do invest the time the game banks on them investing) the sky really could be the limit for the diminutive sackboy. Beyond a few control niggles and the obvious challenge of the content creation tools (which are perhaps not as approachable as the sandbox, power-to-the-people theme struck might imply), this is a game that can take you to new and exciting places like few others before it. We're buying into the LittleBigPlanet phenomenon; we're buying in big. So should you.

All things considered, I recommend LittleBigPlanet to a wide range of people: creative players, curious gamers, platforming enthusiasts, parents looking for something to share with their kids (playing co-op is so much fun!), etc. The game is everything it promised and more: striking level design, great music, easy controls, addictive gameplay, tons of features and collectables, and amazing physics. Time will tell if this 3D crafted material world will turn into something huge like a "littlebig" gaming genre.

Intellectual interpretations are one thing, though, and most gamers come for other things entirely -- and a few rough points aside -- LittleBigPlanet delivers in spades. It is every bit as charming, beautiful, clever and challenging as you could hope for. The old adage holds firm: good things come in small packages.

Play. Create. Share. These three simple words make up developer Media Molecule’s little big blueprint for a charming and unique game that wonderfully brings out the creative side in people. Apparently there are already plans for a sequel, but I can’t imagine how the developers can possibly top this.

Little Big Planet will sell consoles for Sony and it will sell them to gamers of all ages. Families will enjoy Little Big Planet because of the ease of gameplay and the four player co-op. Hardcore gamers will enjoy Little Big Planet because of the collection aspect and the user created content. Future game designers will love Little Big Planet because of the incredible level editor. The only blemish on this package is the character controls and that’s a real shame because without that problem Little Big Planet might be the perfect game. Don’t let the shaky controls stop you from trying this title out though, because it has something for everyone and shouldn’t be missed.

Other than its length, Little Big Planet is everything we expected it to be. It’s easily recommendable to anyone. Sony have told us there will be downloadable content, both in the form of extra levels, and objects for the level editor, and I am gunna be all over those new levels. 9/10

LittleBigPlanet reminds me of the original Rayman: beautiful graphics that feature lush backgrounds and cute characters in a game that isn’t afraid to ramp up the difficulty. Don’t be fooled about the looks, the game can be a beast. With plenty of provided levels, there is a good amount of play right off the bat; however, to get the most out of LittleBigPlanet, a persistent Internet connection is recommended. Not since Project Gotham Racing have I seen the online element so well and thoroughly implemented into the entire design. The controls can be fussy, and not all levels are winners, especially when dealing with created levels, but the canvas provided by the creator tools has already resulted in some fantastic levels and I cannot wait to see what is to come. Even if the controls are left untouched, LittleBigPlanet is still a winner, through and through, and offers a unique opportunity for aspiring designers and those looking for a wild romp on their PlayStation 3.

Bit-Tech
Even when you've completed all of the pre-made levels, there's the potential for hundreds and thousands of extra levels out there, thanks to the community of amateur level designers. That level design has been made as easy as the ability to find new levels to play means that LittleBigPlanet is a game that will last for months and possibly years down the line. If you think there are some clever levels out there now, come back in six months' time and see what you can find then. You won't be disappointed. And in our books, such longevity is a good thing for the developer, it's a good thing for the PS3 – but most of all, it's a good thing for us gamers.

LittleBigPlanet is an ambitious experiment and the gameplay possibilities are almost endless. In the short time the game has been out, I’ve played user-created levels that far exceed the ideas that the developers seem to have had for the title. Regardless of if you own a Playstation 3 or not, gamers need to find a way to spend a little time with this game. Media Molecule can stand proud of the fact that they have crafted one of the best games of this current generation and that players will continue to use the game to craft their own masterpieces for others to play.

As the available levels in the game are quite limited you're almost forced to get some additional ones through the online possibilities from the game. The game is "make or break" by the community but if we have to base ourselves on the available levels of the moment it's already a big success! You can always get your own creativity going but if you're lacking in that department you still won't get bored with LittleBigPlanet.

Yes, LittleBigPlanet has some problems, but they in no way should stop you from playing. If you are a PS3 owner, there’s no reason not to have this game. It’s fantastic, fun, beautiful, creative, and unique—pretty much everything you would want from any game and everything you would expect from a game that came with so many months of hype and excitement. With unlimited replay value and potential, you will probably be playing it for months—if not years—to come. Technical issues aside, I believe that after all the votes have been cast, LittleBigPlanet will be remembered as one of the best games of the year.

Little Big Planet is one of the years most stimulating games to be released. Exclusively designed to run on the PS3, fanboys will love the fact that Xbox owners won`t get the chance to "play, create and share" with the always charming Sackboy. Little Big Planet isn`t a perfect game and falls into some pitfalls along the way, but as a whole product the project is larger than life and immersive. The greatest asset to Little Big Planet is its motto which allows you to unlock your imagination and create your own creations within the game. Media Molecule has made a stamp on the gaming community with a unique entertaining action platforming game that takes the genre in a new direction with its blending user created content with an artistic flair. Little Big Planet is one title that you can`t miss out on and a must-have for all platforming and budding game developers around the world.

Even with launch day hiccups that prove a bit frustrating, LittleBigPlanet is indisputably one of the year's best titles. Its simplicity is deceptive; the easy platforming elements build in complexity in story mode to give gamers the best console side-scroller since Viewtiful Joe. The buzzword that's been tossed around a bit excessively is "creative." Granted, it's the root of a good third of the experience, but simply bandying the phrase "be creative" is a bit pat and can't accurately capture everything the game offers. Truthfully, LBP is a game rooted in production and consumption. The experience is hinged upon consuming and collecting in order to expand your depth and range when it's time to move into conceiving and concocting. Not everyone is going to offer a vision for others to experience, but the revolutionary nature of LittleBigPlanet ensures that gamers worldwide will be enriched a little more each time they turn on their PS3s.

So what does this all add up to? LittleBigPlanet is everything you could possibly imagine, stuffed into miniature craft based levels, and executed remarkably well, and although everyone is still getting used to the tools, there are some real gems available online already for the keen player. With the innovation and massive pool of potential talent beavering away at their own masterpieces (mine to come soon), if you get any pleasure from clever physics based platformers, there is no reason not to pick up LittleBigPlanet. If they sort the moderation and the online lag, this game would be almost perfect.

In reality, LittleBigPlanet is a game with all the right ingredients - maybe just not quite the right mix. Playing alone isn't the best way to experience it - unless you're creating a level - but playing with your friends is absolutely fantastic. The gameplay can be somewhat iffy and falling through a level highlights the difficulty even the developers can have with creating a level, but with the right support LBP will be capable of amazing things. If you have more than one PS3 control pad or someone online to play with, LittleBigPlanet is a must have addition to your PS3 experience - I don't think it's a system seller though.

In a sense, LittleBigPlanet is only as good as we make it, and with the promise of downloadable content (including a Metal Gear pack, complete with Solid Snake Sackboy), there should always be some new world to explore or sticker to collect. Even if you have no desire to make anything, there will be a never-ending stream of content. Who knows, perhaps seeing other people's designs will inspire you, and if that happens, there's no telling how many doors you'll open. With that, we strongly encourage you to purchase this marvelous game and unleash those creative juices.

Little Big Planet is a startlingly imaginative take on the platforming genre, and its story mode, while short, is truly outstanding. It's down to the community to elongate the life of the game, and while only the most ardent fans will be up to the task of making compelling content, the tools here certainly have some potential. If you've not got a creative bent then you might feel like you're getting half a game, but that doesn't stop Little Big Planet being a star that burns twice as bright, half as long.

A quantum leap in concept and design, and one which falls inches - nay, millimetres - short of a perfect score. There's no better reason to own a PlayStation 3.

LittleBigPlanet may well save the PS3 (if it indeed needs saving), it may be the most creative game of all time, it could well usher in a new era of user-generated gaming, and has a chance of bringing about a 2D platforming renaissance, but all those things are down to you. The game Media Molecule has created won't do these things alone, but if gamers create the levels we think they're capable of, we might be looking at one of the most important games this console generation has seen. As it stands it's an entertaining platfomer, highly polished training tool and potential gateway to greatness. We're hoping it will end up being much more.

But mostly, we're just happy to see a flagship game for a modern system that's about running from left to right and jumping over things. New ideas are great, great old ideas are better, and LittleBigPlanet has both: it's the future and the past of videogames, rolled into one.

That's not to say that I'd recommend LittleBigPlanet to everybody. As varied as LittleBigPlanet can be, it always remains limited to its 2D gameplay, and that doesn't suit everybody (especially amongst PS3 owners). The game may also turn off die-hard fans of 2D platformers, as its below-average controls and lack of power-up system are as baffling as they are disappointing. Basically, the "game" part of LittleBigPlanet isn't that great: a real 6.0. On the flip-side of all that is LittleBigPlanet's amazing level creation tools and enormous amount of quality online UCC, which both come together to offer a separate (and superior) experience: a genuine 10.0 purchase.

I mentioned earlier that I haven’t played a platformer like LittleBigPlanet in a long-time. Frankly, that statement should be amended to say that “I have never played a game like this.” There is something so indefinably charming, completely fascinating, and utterly engaging about this game that seems to bring out the creative side in players. Scrolling through the dearth of levels already posted by a community, some of which were made within less than a week of the game being released, you can find levels that break the traditional platform genre and introduce elements from other archetypes.

LittleBigPlanet is a tough game to review. It’s packed with brilliance, originality and uniqueness, and provides one of the year’s richest and most special gaming experiences. But it’s also an experience that’s high on frustration. It’s sad to see a game flirt so effortlessly with genius, but then take so many missteps along the way. Luckily, most of the issues are things that can be rectified over time. Media Molecule and Sony have already publicly acknowledged many of the negative issues, and committed themselves to taking corrective steps. I really hope that they do, as the game simply deserves better. For now, though, I would be lying if I said that LittleBigPlanet is not strongly recommended to all PS3 owners. In many ways it’s the best game available on the platform, and despite the glaring weaknesses it’s the kind of game that any gamer should at least try out. Just expect to swallow some flies with the honey.

The fact that you can create and share your own custom stages gives Little Big Planet boundless replay value. So why am I not loving it? Well, it takes a while for the game to gain traction, as the early stages tend to be very easy and generic. When the difficulty finally kicks in (around Mexico), you'll experience the same kind of frustrations you find in any platform game, including hard-to-see hazards and irritating stage designs. Moving between planes can be confusing, and the "soft" jumping controls lack precision. Finally, the game goes overboard with the concept of collecting stickers and customizing your character. While some gamers will embrace these concepts, most will find them unnecessary at best and annoying at worst. Even so, Little Big Planet is hard to dislike. It's not revolutionary, but it is a well-crafted family game that fills a gaping hole in the PS3 library.

Armchair Empire, The
I do sound down on the game overall but I should also note that it hasn’t been removed from my PS3 since I put it in. The chunky nature of the title has allowed me to play in short bursts, which always makes it a good standby title if I just need some kind of very quick gaming fix. Having a continuous supply of new levels helps LittleBigPlanet remain fresh – there’s always something new to fool around with, even though there are plenty of half-assed levels out there.

With LittleBigPlanet, Media Molecule have made something beautiful, and it really is so close to being both a wonderful creation tool, universe AND a stunning platform game. The platform part needed to take old-school gamers who actually like using skill rather than random numbers to calculate their success rates into account, but if you can get past that and the other niggles that - at the moment, at least - sit like gaping fissures on LittleBigPlanet, then you’ll have a blast and will be transported back to a time when you didn’t have to worry about work, relationships and money - a time when you just needed a cardboard box fort and you were all set.

So how best to sum up this title? Well it’s good looking, has a fresh approach, but is unlikely to convince non-believers it’s something worth having.
