The levels are exceptionally original. I thoroughly enjoyed the slippery Ice world which had me feel a bit of nostalgia as if it was the good old days with Sonic when you nearly felt out of control, but also just enough to feel really cool. Later on you find yourself in a whale’s stomach, dodging teeth sticking to roofs with all squishiness all over. It’s all very original and something that has never been seen before. It’s a brilliant game - a simple cross between puzzle and platformer that has happy smiley faces entertaining you throughout. You won’t find a cuter 2D platformer on the PSP.

LocoRoco is now my favorite PSP game. It has beautiful visuals, wonderful songs, cute characters, simple gameplay that’s easy on the go, and a lot of replay value. LocoRoco is not for everyone, though. If you MUST have multiplayer in your games, look elsewhere. If you just cant stand cute characters and songs, please look away. But for the rest of us, LocoRoco is an addicting and incredibly fun game. Check this one out!

The Review Busters
For only $20, there really isn't a reason to add LocoRoco to your PSP library. It's fun, cute, and well worth the low price tag. It isn't a game that will make you want to run out and buy a PSP, but it's at least a must-own for the pricetag.

When I play this game, it feels utterly complete. I don't find myself thinking that they should have had this thing or left out that thing, because every single bit of it just belongs. LocoRoco is a shining example of how to take a concept and fully realize it, from gameplay to overall artistic design. Although people will naturally draw comparisons to Katamari Damacy games, in my eyes it's surpassed them. LocoRoco is more than just some quirky game — it's as close to perfection as you're going to get.

You owe it to yourself to at least try out LocoRoco. This will very deservedly be on many year end lists.

It's really amazing how creative Sony got with LocoRoco. I never expected such a quirky game to get released on the PSP, let alone one developed from Sony. A year and a half after the PSP's North American release, there is finally a reason to own the system. Without a doubt LocoRoco is the best PlayStation Portable game and possibly the best handheld game in general so far this year. Look for LocoRoco to be a serious contender for PSP Game of the Year when we announce our awards later in 2006.

So, the PSP finally got some platformer love. Seeing how it has been 18 months since it came out, all I can say is: "It was about time!" Is the game perfect? Not really. It's a bit easy for one thing. The 3 extra mini-games are not all lasting either. The ability to build your own LocoRoco house for your little friends to play in (think Lemmings) gets old really fast. Minor negatives aside, I wholeheartedly recommend this game to everyone, it is extremely addictive!

LocoRoco is a work of art and in all honesty is the best PSP game we've seen to date. The game's innovative, addictive and thoroughly charming. In fact it's a recommended purchase for every PSP owner (of every age) who wants a game that's going to leave a huge smile on their face. It's also a game I would like to see appear on the PlayStation 3. In fact considering that the game could make use of the motion sensing controller on the PlayStation 3 it would make a lot of sense if the game was to appear on the console. LocoRoco is easily one of the most enjoyable and addictive games we've played in a while.

Worth Playing
Granted, the silly visuals and joyous songs would all be for naught if the gameplay didn't match up; such is not the case, luckily. Eighteen months after its launch, the PSP finally has a fantastic original franchise not named Lumines. Pick it up, sing along, and enjoy the first great game of the fall.

In the end LocoRoco proves to be a success due to a number of reasons including an inspired artistic style that is simple but strikingly beautiful, characters that are both eccentric and charming, and a catchy soundtrack that you won't get out of your head. Despite it's short playtime (which is alleviated a bit by trying to meet the challenge of collecting everything in each level) and a lack of multiplayer, LocoRoco is still the best platformer to hit the PSP this year.

This is by far one of the most interesting games tried on the PSP and in my top five arcade games on any platform. Locoroco is an example of what a little imagination can do without quadruple video cards, using just three buttons. I might not have followed the carrier of Tsutomu Kouno, but I'm pretty sure I'm not going to miss any of his future games.

Darkstation
LocoRoco is the most engaging PSP game that has come out this year, hands down. This is a game that I would highly recommend to any PSP owner out there that has any interest at all in just a simple gaming experience. This game is great for both short and long gaming sessions, and is one that has the replay value, as it is easily a game that you will want to go and revisit a few months or years down the road.

Cheat Code Central
A quirky and accessible game is exactly what the PSP needs at this point, especially after a disappointing summer without a definitive blockbuster title. With gameplay that you would expect to see on the DS instead of the PSP, Loco Roco is easily the most accessible title available to date and is easily one of the best titles to be seen on Sony’s handheld since its debut. It will hardly put an end to the murmurs against the PSP in the media, but it will keep you glued to that big, beautiful screen for hours on end.
90
videogamer.com
As far as PSP titles go, there is nothing that comes close to being so wonderfully suited to the platform, with every part of its design simply working how you'd want it to. The handheld has plenty of good games that are held back by mediocre controls. LocoRoco has no such leash around its neck.
90
Atomic Gamer
Coming up with a way to describe my overall experience with the game is difficult. I could only think of one way to share how I feel about it -- mix happiness, cheerfulness, smiles and a heaping spoon of sugar and you have LocoRoco. There really isn’t anything else out there like it – you owe it to yourself to give it a shot.

GamingExcellence
While certainly not the longest or deepest game, LocoRoco will hold a truly special place in any PSP owner's library as that perfectly quirky title that can please anyone and be replayed endlessly. It's also the only title I know of that made me happy while playing it. How often can you say that about a videogame? LocoRoco: videogame therapy recommended for everyone. A must own title.

If you have a PSP and you enjoy games at all, you should run out now and buy LocoRoco. If you don't have a PSP and you enjoy games at all, you should run out now and buy LocoRoco and a PSP. LocoRoco has so much going for it that it seems a shame that more people haven't bought it yet. Sony is pushing this one hard, and for a change that push is for a game that actually deserves it. Sam Fisher can wait for another bus ride. Your future is bright and happy.

LocoRoco is a really great game that is so simple and challenging at the same time that it just keeps players coming back for more. This is a game that you can show all the people that like to condemn videogames for everything that is going wrong with society that shows that not all videogames have to contain violence to be fun. If you see this game in stores I would suggest you pick it up to see for your self that rolling around is really fun to do.

Kombo.com
As good as LocoRoco is, it isn’t a killer app but it shouldn’t be missed by ANY PSP owner that calls themselves a gamer. Have friends that are hesitant to get the game? LocoRoco has a game sharing option where you can download a level on another PSP without the UMD. What kind of game is LocoRoco? The best description is that it is a “good game” because standard genre definitions don’t fit anywhere in the game.
90
PGNx Media
LocoRoco is definitely recommended if you’re going to be playing for short amounts of time. While the audiovisual presentation is amazing – and to be honest probably worth the price of admission – the actual gameplay can get a little stale after long gameplay sessions. Trading levels and Loco Houses with friends can also be quite fun.

Loco Roco is certainly a fun ride through a very Japanese acid-trip of a world. I'd love to see a sequel offer some sort of motion sensor a la Warioware Twisted or Yoshi Topsy Turvy. That kind of gameplay involving tilting the actual system would work perfectly with this title. As is it may not be particularly long or complex, but it's greatly entertaining while it lasts.

PlayDevil
"LocoRoco" is probably the best game for Sony's PSP because it's so different then any other game. A whole new experience will open up once you played it and thanks to its clever and beatiful level design, attractive songs and innovative gameplay, "LocoRoco" is a game that will make you happy when playing and give you so much fun! Don't miss it because it really deserves to be succesfull and its the best reason to own a PSP.

LocoRoco makes me happy. In fact, it almost makes me OD on happy. If they gave this game to depressed people Xanax would be over the counter. Normally, bouncing, assimilating, tilting and defending tiny amoebas on blubbery backgrounds would rank somewhere in my “I’ll play that when I’m dead” file, but Kaouno-san has managed to make the mundane entertain through a mesmerizing jumble of shapes, color and especially sound.

Extreme Gamer
LocoRoco is a good light hearted action platforming game with has a capital "O" for Originality. All you need to do is spend a few minutes with these little creatures and you'll likely be hooked. LocoRoco is simple, inspiring, original and fun. If you own a PSP you need to check out LocoRoco, it's delightful.

Here's an odd one. Think of interactive lava lamps spliced with traditional platform gameplay and you have Locoroco. It's a strange and unique concept that comes at a time when Sony's handheld has come under fire as a system of hand-me-downs. It plays unlike any other game on the PSP. Hell, it plays unlike most games in existence, for that matter. And just to be clear, uniqueness isn't what makes Locoroco a success; it's the fact that it works as a wholly entertaining portable product.

But this isn't LocoRoco: The Sequel. It's a brand new game, which, arriving decades after the first 2D platform puzzlers, feels almost as fresh as Mario once did. Simply put, it's as much fun you can have with super-cute creatures without warranting attention from the police. If LocoRoco doesn't make you smile, you're probably dead. Or a slime mould.

Imagine, if you will, 20 years or so down the line. Sonic the Hedgehog has gone bald, slowed RIGHT up, and got fat. Really fat. Really, really fat. So fat, in fact, that he's actually gone a lardy yellow colour, and he doesn't run anymore. Instead, he bounces and slops about, like a space hopper full to bursting with cold vegetable soup. Got that? Good. Because apart from a terrible warning about the ravages of old age and overconsumption of gazpacho, that is about as best a comparison to Sony's new PSP offering as I can manage. Oh, apart from one other thing - whereas Sonic lost his magic gaming touch some years ago, Loco Roco is tremendously enjoyable.

We don't know what they're smoking over there at Sony, but share the wealth! As simple as it is psychedelic, this trippy puzzle/platformer sits alongside Mercury and Lumines as an ultra-addictive PSP treasure. For the record, a LocoRoco is a smiley little blob creature that is half Pokemon and half one of those slippery things filled with shampoo that are impossible to hold on to... you know the ones...

Somewhere, there's a dizzy parallel universe where there's no Radio One. No Capital Gold. No Magic FM. Where the soundtrack to everyday life throbs with manic day-glo doo-wop pop thrills and the words you hear have never been heard by mortal ears. It's a world where the smiling bubble offspring of Jeff Minter's perverted Corona dreams have to pass their fizzical by warbling joyous high pitched odes to MDMA and the wonders of surging serotonin. These amorphous blobs grin themselves to death for the love of plants. It's a happy, albeit brief existence.

I've liked a number of PSP games; I'd even say that a few of the currently available PSP titles are essential purchases. Of these essential games, though, there isn't a standout handheld classic - something that seems a perfect fit for the system. It's been eighteen months since the PSP launched in Japan, but finally Sony's handheld has a game that doesn't feel shoehorned into the UMD drive. LocoRoco is a classic.

Not only is LocoRoco one of the most unique and innovative games to hit the PSP, but it is one of the most unique games to hit all the systems. Aside from not being very long, everything else in the game works wonders, whether it be the soundtrack, graphics, or controls. The game could easily be recommended to individuals of all ages who are looking for a unique gaming experience.

LocoRoco is a fantastic game despite its few issues. As reviewers it’s necessary to nitpick and critique games on a higher standard, but there is no reason why you shouldn’t drop your cash or card on the counter for LocoRoco the next time you stroll into your local game or electronics store. It’s one of the best experiences for the PSP, and if you’re a stickler for perfecting games you will get the bang for you buck as you try to collect everything in each level.

LocoRoco is a breath of fresh air from the remakes and rehashes that appear on PSP from week to week. As unchallenging as it may be to complete levels, collecting every single fruit flower and exploring the environments provides reason to go back into 40 stages of this charming time waster. Most of all, its original and stylish in a way that fills your system with colors and gameplay that decade-old ports cannot.

LocoRoco is one of the most original and quirky titles to hit the PSP in some time. The controls are such that both hardcore and casual players alike can get into the game just as well. BUT, even with its flaws, even if it’s pretty short game, it remains genius in its simplicity. I think that you’ll get so addicted that when boredom comes you’ll already have finished the game twice! Go and get it, ‘cause it’s probably the first original game you’ve played since PuzzleBobble (which of course was copied and repeated thousands of times). Aaah, beloved game industry…

LocoRoco offers a fresh and totally original gameplay concept on a platform that is becoming increasingly weighted down with uninspired ports of console titles. Whether you are five or sixty-five, you are going to love LocoRoco if you give it half a chance. The controls are so simple that anyone can master this game in just a few minutes, and the addictive gameplay will keep you coming back for more wacky action for months to come.

Despite having a few minor flaws, LocoRoco proves to be one of the most endearing games on the PSP. If you're the type of gamer who is sick of racing games, fighting games and of course Grand Theft Auto, then LocoRoco will be a welcome breath of fresh air. If you're not afraid of a game with a lot of personality and some of the most upbeat music you will ever hear, then LocoRoco is the game for you.

This game is truly as happy as I make it out to be, and the peppy musical gibberish serves as a perfect audio backdrop to the joyful scene. Flaws aside, of which I’m sure will be addressed in the inevitable sequel, LocoRoco is happy-go-lucky, a wonderful portable experience, and definitely the gaming equivalent of human serotonin.

As adorable as it is eccentric, and as addictive as it is challenging, it still may not be everyone's cup of tea. But if happy, singing blobs navigating trippy technicolour worlds sounds like fun, you need this one in your PSP library.

LocoRoco is a weird game: a simple idea that has become a worldwide success. It's one of those rare titles that dissolves the boundaries of gaming and appeals to everyone from the kids to hardened gamers to grandparents! While it is not 'the' perfect game, it does come pretty close; the visuals appeal and if, by some chance, they don't then the perky toe-tapping soundtrack is certain to make everyone smile.

Repetitive songs or not, we can't stay mad at LocoRoco. Not when we're watching the sweet-natured little blobs hopping all over each other while talking, yelling and singing, anyway. The world of LocoRoco is uniquely beautiful, aggressively charming and a lot of fun to explore, and it keeps its load times short. If you've ever wanted a reason to hug your PSP, now's your chance.

Loco Roco is a game that PSP owners simply must try; it's the type of unconventional and quirky gameplay that is infectious and addictive beyond rationality, and a game that you will want to keep playing and never stop - you will want to hear those songs again and again, and to see the different levels using different Loco Rocos. You may not play it for months at a time, but the compulsive gameplay will keep you coming back to it over and over, never letting the game far from your PSP.

Loco Roco is an amazing game, quite possibly the most charming game I've ever played. It's the kind of game that will automatically make you happy while you play it. As a handheld title its ideal. Its only real drawback is that for many of us it might be over a little too soon. The game hits the US early September and is definitely recommended, if fun is your thing!

Despite this, Loco Roco is worth playing. This unconventional and quirky gameplay is infectious and addictive beyond objective analysis. You want to keep playing and never stop. The LocoRoco world works perfectly. There are few examples of out of the box game design that are so well put together. Even if the music isn't quite to taste, the joyful bounce of the LocoRoco should be enough to keep anyone playing for hours.

Luckily, I get the feeling that it does manage to duck out right before all the simple concepts introduced at the beginning of the game and carried through to the end star to wear thin. Like all cute things, LocoRoco doesn't wear out its welcome.

Game Informer Magazine
LocoRoco is probably the most infectious, charming game I’ve played since Katamari Damacy. Like that title, it features great music, a brightly colored, strange art style, and addictive gameplay. In this case, your task is to navigate a blob across a series of increasingly complex platforming levels. Like Katamari, it does get a bit repetitive after awhile, but for the most part this is an excellent and creative PSP title.

Bouncing around a giant blomange for several minutes trying to reach a pick up that I don't even really care about is not the most edifying game experience I'll have in 2006, but this trippy and surreal waterslide is pulled off with such self-assured finesse that, as those over zealous supporters know only too well, it really is hard not to love.

LocoRoco is a crazy game that really shows when a developer sits down and comes up with an original idea, it can be fantastic. This is a game that proves that the PSP can do more than just port PS2 classics and shows that developers, when given the chance, can still produce some fantastic original handheld content. We love it!

Despite its repetition at times, LocoRoco is a winner. It manages to tap into that 'joy to play, bitch to master' vein, which is a hard combination to pull off. It's an easy and friendly enough game to be an enticing advert for the PSP, and getting everything is challenging enough to make this title appealing to more experienced gamers. Add to that the way it's sweetly packaged in crisp, sweetie-coloured graphics and cheery music, and this is definitely this summer's must-have game for Sony's handheld.

Every once in a while, a game comes around that is designed specifically for a certain platform -- where it just wouldn't feel the same on anything else. For the PSP, this is one of those games. And for that reason, while LocoRoco is far from being a perfect game, it is perfect for the PSP.

G4 TV: X-Play
Loco Roco looks to shake things up on the PSP. The game's strategy? Take more than a couple of cues from 2004's cult hit Katamari Damacy. The game's simplified graphical look, pared-down controls and quirky original music bear all the earmarks of innovative gaming. But Loco Roco isn't looking to break any molds in one category. As a 2D platforming adventure this portable offering is also a throw-back to the old school. Newcomer Loco Roco has fierce competition with neo-retro releases like New Super Mario Brothers and Ultimate Ghosts 'n Goblins on store shelves, but manages to hold its own against these heavy hitters.

PAL Gaming Network (PALGN)
LocoRoco really is a difficult title to describe. The game is an addictive 2D sidescrolling musical platform game that reminds us of Katamari Damacy and Yoshi's Universal Gravitation. The PSP isn't really known for original games, it's been a long time since Lumines but finally another original PSP game has arrived in LocoRoco.

GameTrailers
There’s no denying that LocoRoco is a fun and unique game, and definitely a game made to enhance the portable aspect of the PSP. But it’s kinda the videogame equivalent of techno music: it’s simple and catchy, but if you play it too much at once you might get bored.
77
GameSpot
Never underestimate the raw power of unbridled charm. LocoRoco is a platformer with a unique control scheme and a one-track mind that has you essentially performing the same handful of activities at roughly the same difficulty level from start to finish. So in long play sessions, you might find yourself a bit put off by the gameplay's relative monotony. But that winning charm, combined with a dedication to playing in short bursts, makes LocoRoco a fun little diversion.
75
Game Revolution
So is the overall game, but it’s a pretty trip. Oozing bizarre style out of every pore, this is proof that creative design doesn’t require fancy DVD players or burly graphics cards. It’s perfectly suited for the PSP, with gameplay and graphics that actually take advantage of the 16:9 aspect ratio and great screen. Though it doesn’t roll quite far enough, LocoRoco is certainly a song worth singing.

Overall, LocoRoco is the game the PSP has been waiting for. Its quirky gameplay and lovable soundtrack will entice almost anyone to pick it up and try it out. It can be very difficult when it comes to playing for perfection, but the challenge is not always a deterrent, it can be seen as an opportunity to see if one can do it. If you or your child has a PSP, this is a game you should have or consider getting them for Christmas. If this is a sign of things to come, we may start seeing some very good things for the future of the PSP.

When I play LocoRoco, I become mellow. The game has almost no frustrations, and that's what makes it an interesting diversion. It's the sort of game that will appeal to anyone looking to slow down and take time to eat the flowers.
75
Game Informer Magazine
But there are a lot of interesting ideas here and, hardcores be damned, it’s cute-as-a-button attitude is a great asset. I found myself exploring and retrying more than the core gameplay would have warranted just because I liked looking around. Can style trump gameplay? Ultimately, no; but personality can, as they say, go a long way.

It could be the visuals, the gameplay, or the controls (or something else that just doesn't fit neatly into a category) that immediately give the title a measure of credibility in the industry. Games like WarioWare and Katamari Damacy are recent examples of this phenomenon, but there are just as many (if not more) titles that don't quite make as much of an impact as was intended. LocoRoco was quickly anointed as "the next big thing" when it was first unveiled, thanks largely to a combination of stunning visuals and intriguing gameplay. Unfortunately, while it's impossible not to be charmed the first time you play LocoRoco, the game is ultimately a one-trick pony, offering up unchallenging, repetitive gameplay amid its admittedly impressive visuals.

While LocoRoco is guilty of being overly upbeat and adorable, it's also guilty of being a solid 2D platformer that is a welcome addition to any PSP library.

At the very least, LocoRoco proves that there is nothing quite like rolling a giant fatty--err, I mean, it proves that there is still room for innovation in a very traditional genre (side-scroller) even if it's on a more conventional platform.

I sincerely wanted my LocoRoco love affair to last longer and to burn brighter than it did, but it wasn't meant to be. It's fine for a brief fling, but personality and charm can only get a game so far...without anything under the surface, LocoRoco is an experience that's as shallow as it is charming.

It's too bad, because real talent produced this technology and artwork. So much of LocoRoco is so clever and original that it's almost perplexing when it stops being any fun. The fun does run out, though, long before the game is over -- in that sense, the experiment has to be called a failure.

The gameplay seems compelling for a while, but despite its thoughtful stage designs, Loco Roco gradually becomes monotonous and I found myself struggling to maintain interest. The music is entirely in Japanese, much of it sung by a whiney chorus of kids. Not only are these tunes extremely corny, but they'll really get on your nerves. I hate to rain on the parade, but this isn't the "must-have" title PSP fans have been waiting for. LocoRoco is just medio-co.
