Lord of the Rings: Conquest definitely makes you feel like you are in a battle for your life and freedom. Pandemic does a great job of doing that by using certain sounds and background visuals. The simple control scheme makes it easy for anyone to pick it up and play for the first time. The style that this game was made is not going to appeal to everybody. I think the type of gamer that would really enjoy this enough to buy it is going to be fans of the Star Wars: Battlefront series that are looking for a newer version to play on their current generation console. Lord of the Rings fans may be interested to see what the evil campaign has to offer as a story, but beyond that there is not a whole lot. I would recommend first renting this before buying it if you are not a Battlefront enthusiast.

We are going to go ahead and declare The Lord of the Rings: Conquest as a great game concept. Yes it is based on Star Wars: Battlefront, but how it observed the LOTR licence is very impressive. The use of original cut scenes and soundtrack was awesome. The game even went as far as altering the story of the movies to satisfy the game’s needs. The gameplay though is sadly a letdown. Having to use the same buttons and watch the same animation over and over again is as fun as watching paint dry. If you are a fan of the trilogy or if you are looking for a solid game to beat with a friend cooperatively, look no further. Others looking for a deep and satisfying single player game should defiantly look elsewhere.

Το Lord of the Rings: Conquest

The Lord of the Rings: Conquest is a fun title that should keep many diehard fans, especially younger players, engaged. However, if you're looking for something with a bit more depth than button-mashing your way to glory, you will likely find the game shallow and frustrating. In the end, it seems like The Lord of the Rings IP is showing signs of age. At least that seems to be the case for the long line of action titles in the EA stable. Outside of the excellent split-screen and online multiplayer experience, Conquest doesn't substantially distinguish itself from games in the franchise released five years ago, and this holds the overall experience back.

I liked Star Wars Battlefront and I liked Star Wars Battlefront II. I was really looking forwards to seeing what Free Radical could have done with III. The reason I mention these is of course EA jumped on the bandwagon, producing with the aid of Pandemic, the studio who managed to make Mercenaries 2 miss the mark for an open world 3rd person game that could have really revolutionised the genre. I'm not bitter at Pandemic for that, not at all, just disappointed. Rather like I am with the missed potential for Lord of the Rings: Conquest. On paper it seems awesome, fight key battles from Middle Earth in a massive online or offline warzone... killing the servants of Sauron and playing as key characters from the hugely popular fantasy saga, on paper. In practise it's pretty much Star Wars Battlefront with different skins and some new classes.

A weekend rental at best due to the game being wildly unbalanced and not a fun game but just a mediocre title. If it is patched and it’s balancing and multiplayer issues are addressed it might be worth a second look. Hopefully EA will return to the fold and give us another great game like Lord of the Rings: The Third Age, an awesome Role Playing Game that I would love to see a similar game released this generation.

Xbox 360GameDaily (Jan 19, 2009)
The graphics look decent (despite some broken animations), and the game allows players to smash both Orcs and Hobbits. That said, the mindless button mashing grows redundant and some enemies are mind-numbingly difficult. If you can overlook these flaws and find a few friends to play with, however, you'll enjoy the large-scale battles and classic Lord of the Rings music.

Xbox 360Peliplaneetta.net (Feb 04, 2009)

LotR: Conquest may be disappointing but it’s not a complete failure. It passes out achievements like their cheap candy and there is a certain charm when playing as your favorite characters. It also draws heavily from the movies and, like it did to me, might reignite your desire to watch them. Yet, none of these traits make for great gameplay. With short campaigns, frustrating combat, and chaotic multiplayer LotR: Conquest feels like a $60 reminder that Peter Jackson makes awesome movies.

Xbox 360IGN (Jan 13, 2009)
The Lord of the Rings: Conquest is a straightforward affair with very little that will pleasantly surprise anyone who played Star Wars: Battlefront. Its combat and general mission structure is by-the-books and the lack of expandability and feeling of redundancy are felt instantly. Withstanding all of that, Conquest still somehow manages to earn merit on its expert use of The Lord of the Rings license. The environments feel like they're straight from the silver screen and Howard Shore's multiple orchestral pieces are great to fight alongside. Diehard fans of both online, class-based games and The Lord of the Rings might want to invest the sixty bucks, but if redundant and unimaginative gameplay are things you despise, you'll want to steer clear.

Oorlog is hard, slordig en willekeurig, net zoals The Lord of the Rings: Conquest.

Lord Of The Rings: Conquest is a rather staid and bland affair that appears to be in many ways a carbon copy of Star Wars: Battlefront. The combat is lacking and the mission development and structure feels to be a case of the developers just going through the motions. It really is hard to recommend this game to anyone except the Lord Of The Rings die hard fans.

I still had some fun with it... I realise you have to keep it simple online but it still felt like a series of minigames, rather than a full game. To be fair though, I think the online problems are more of an Xbox Live issue than a problem with the game, 6.5.

It’s sad to see such great potential go so wrong and while The Lord of the Rings: Conquest isn’t awful, it just isn’t as amazing as the trilogy itself. If you’re a huge fan of the films who is patient enough to put up with a number of annoyances, then this game might be for you. Those who can’t are better off skipping this one.

Lord of the Rings: Conquest isn't a bad game, it's just disappointing. It also doesn't offer anything for non-fans of the Battlefront series. That does however make the recommendation criteria easier; if you liked Star Wars: Battlefront and are a fan of Lord of the Rings, then you will probably enjoy this very much. If the Battlefront games weren't your thing, then this probably won't be either.

War is messy, and The Lord of the Rings: Conquest isn't a clean gaming experience. Combat can be as exasperating as it is exhilarating, and playing solo can be a trying endeavor. Nevertheless, these pitfalls are somewhat compensated for by two epic campaigns that draw you into a rich world in new and exciting ways. Fans of this world will get the most out of The Lord of the Rings: Conquest, but gamers who are looking to battle in an epic setting and willing to weather some frustrating elements will find plenty of excitement on this journey through Middle-earth.

If you’ve played Battlefront then this will be all too familiar and suffers from all of the same issues as well. Even for newcomers and LOTR fans, this will be tough to enjoy due to the brevity of the game and the shoddy mechanics. It is fun for a while, but despite the epic landscapes and chance to control (even fleetingly) the heroes of the Middle-Earth, once that first half an hour is over you’ll be looking elsewhere for your fun.

PlayStation 3Fragland.net (Feb 06, 2009)
In the end this is a very mediocre game and while being part of Tolkiens stories must be great this game certainly hasn't been worked out deep enough. Just about every aspect of it could use more variation and therefore Conquest won't be able to keep you attention for very long.

During a particularly insane match of Hero Deathmatch - a mode that pits the strongest characters in the game against each other - I played as Gimli. My team consisted of two Aragorns, Legolas, three Faramirs, and a hobbit. For an hour, we fought mercilessly against an army of four Witch Kings and four Wormtongues, duking it out until cruel, merciless God decided he had been entertained enough. If that’s the kind of thing that sounds like a good time, by all means, pick up Conquest, because there is nothing else like it. If you’re still mad because Peter Jackson thought Tom Bombadill was boring and moved Shelob into The Return of the King instead of The Two Towers, don your hobbit costumes and get ready to take this game to Mount Doom.

By the time Conquest has struck its final blow, you will likely have spent almost ten hours with the single player portion of the game. In that time, you will have fought in some of Tolkien's most steeped battles. The war for Middle Earth is epic to staggering proportions, and this entry by Pandemic does not fail in letting you experience the fullness of the conflict. But within that experience there are many bumps. Cheap deaths, button mashing, and repetitiveness hurt the overall experience. Indeed, rather then adding to the genre, Conquest simply gives you more of the same, albeit with a new coat of paint. If you are a fan of the series or this style of hack and slash gameplay, there is enough here to warrant your time. Otherwise, you may want to keep your distance or stick to a rental.

To call Lord of the Rings Conquest a failure to the franchise would be overstatement. Despite its many flaws, there is some fun to be had. Poor design choices, sloppy controls and a lack of any soul or polish keep it from being anything but a brief distraction, but hacking your way through the armies of Sauron to the tune of Howard Shore’s epic soundtrack is enjoyable up to a point. Eventually, though, the game’s many problems catch up with it, dragging it down into the realm of the sub-par. A disappointing effort for a concept that should have been a sure thing.

Overall Lord of the Rings Conquest is a decent game. If you are a huge Lord of the Rings fan you will get some pleasure in fighting through some of the films most famous scenes. The game is really short which means it would make a really great rental for other people. If you have played the Battlefront series then you have basically played this game. Obviously with this game being on the XBox360 the game looks better than the Battlefront games that appeared on the Playstation 2 and Xbox. The multiplayer could add some longevity as Lord of the Rings fans will enjoy battling over the ring or seeing who is the better hero. Definitely try out the demo on Xbox Live to see if this is your type of game. If it is, then by all means give it a chance. Otherwise move along, nothing to see here.

Xbox 360MS Xbox World (Jan 19, 2009)
Lord of the Rings: Conquest is an average game at best, which could have been improved in so many ways – better graphics, more refined combat, decent camera etc. A distinct lack of polish really hurts, and as already mentioned, there are some moments which will have you hurling abuse at the TV or left in shock and awe at how poor some of the gameplay is. There are some moments that will lull you into a false sense of security that it’s not all bad, but these are far and few between. If you’re a fan of the series or a younger gamer then there is probably lots of enjoyment to be gained here. If you are not a fan and perhaps better acquainted with more depth, then this game is best avoided. Conquest is decent rental fodder for gamers looking for something new for an afternoon. Beyond this its appeal is very limited and drowns in a sea of similar action games.

Most of these flaws actually tend to be quite amusing, but they still don't help what is ultimately a fairly limited experience. There is certainly lots of fun to be had with LOTR: Conquest, but unfortunately it's not really the kind of fun that lasts over a long period of time. Unless you fall in love with the deathmatch modes, the main draw here is the two campaigns - and most gamers will be able to cut their way through both in under five hours. Even if you're a massive fan of the series, we'd advise you to approach this game with caution.

In the end, then, Conquest offers much sound and fury but little substance. In terms of presentation and design, it does a pretty good job of evoking the rich universe of Middle Earth, as imagined by Peter Jackson. But the single-player campaign is rudimentary and brief and the multiplayer modes are fairly few, and they lack any real strategic depth, making it unlikely that anybody beyond the hardcore few will stick with them for the long-term. There is a good game lurking inside the depths of Lord of the Rings: Conquest, but it appears to have been lost in the haste to release it. Perhaps – hopefully – it will emerge in any subsequent sequel.

Unser Tipp: Schaut euch lieber Jacksons Filmepos an.

What I should just dub Lord Of The Rings: Bore/Snore Fest is something that could’ve been fun, but wasn’t. The battles do a good job of conveying the epic scope of the battles, but ultimately it’s just not fun. The combat is mechanical and isn’t as fun as the games that came out for the PS2, Xbox and Gamecube. Hell, if you have the money to blow just buy those. I bet if you chucked this game into Mt. Doom Gollum would not jump in after it.

WindowsCheat Code Central (Jan, 2009)
While Pandemic Studios has attempted to bring their applauded formula to The Lord of the Rings in Conquest, the game is just missing too much finesse to impress most audiences. It does bring some enticing gameplay concepts to the forefront, but without proper execution and delivery, those concepts do very little to make this game deep or interesting. If you’ve been waiting to experience those epic battles you remember from the movies, Conquest will let you do that. Unfortunately, they won’t seem nearly as visually stimulating, action-packed, or epic as you remember.

WindowsCheat Happens (Jan 20, 2009)
Fans of the LOTR films and books will feel right at home in Conquest, unfortunately, even they won’t be entertained for long by the game’s slim package and repetitious gameplay. Though it’s showing its age – you’ll have a much more enjoyable experience sticking with games like Star War: Battlefront or Battlefield 2.

Xbox 360Good Game (Feb 09, 2009)
Well for me it's a no, the AI isn't good enough in single player, and the lag online makes it unplayable. It's designed well enough, but the Australian experience is pretty hard to recommend, 5.

PlayStation 3Play.tm (Feb 05, 2009)
Bottom line with Lord of the Rings: Conquest is that it fails on almost every level to re-create the breathtaking scale and impact of its source material. Generic at best, the game's poorly staged battles and uninspired set pieces drag the player on a plodding journey through a world of imagination and invention where both of those vitally important facets have clearly been lost in translation.

We were hoping for more from The Lord of the Rings: Conquest, and we're disappointed that the game didn't do more with such a powerful license. Star Wars: Battlefront hasn't aged very well, and to get essentially the same game with a different theme left us wanting more. "The Lord of the Rings" fans may want to rent this one to play through the campaigns, but anyone who wants a satisfying multiplayer experience should look elsewhere.

Here we have further proof that EA has mostly wasted one of the best licenses ever. We haven't had a Mass Effect style adventure RPG, we haven't had a Total War style strategy game (we got a poor Warcraft knockoff) and here we've another wasted opportunity in terms of straight actions games. If you enjoyed the Conquest demo you'll no doubt like the full game. But I just found it a bit dull. Too dull even to get annoyed about.

Xbox 360Eurogamer.net (UK) (Jan 16, 2009)
While there is some enjoyment to be had here, it is hard-won and rarely fulfilling. The imprecision of the combat and its lightweight feel combined with the ropey visuals conspire to date the game considerably. The chance to play as heroes and giants is its gimmick, but it lacks the strength of execution to carry the rest, and the result is a game that, while it stops short of doing a disservice to the Lord of the Rings name, does nothing to embellish it.

WindowsActionTrip (Jan 27, 2009)
Giving us nothing better to chew on apart from lackluster releases such as Mercenaries 2: World in Flames and now Lord of the Rings: Conquest, it's obvious enough that Pandemic is really starting to go downhill as a development team.

Xbox 360Kombo.com (Feb 04, 2009)
Conquest is very uncharacteristic of what Pandemic is capable of. Playing through Conquest, it was surprising to see the attention to detail in the visual department and the failure to execute in creating a smooth experience juxtaposed in the same game. Co-op in campaign mode holds the game together but it is a shame to see the game in the state it is in with bugs and flaws galore. It is questionable why Conquest was made as an uninspired third person action game with FPS mechanics. We can only assume that some dreadful deadlines were set because Conquest feels more like a retreat.

Fans of the Lord of the Rings might grab this, but then it might piss them off, too (like it did me). If you're a fan of Dynasty Warriors and Lord of the Rings, then you might actually get something out of this – otherwise, it really is best left at the bottom of the lake in the hands of Smeagol who can waste his life away in a cover stroking the box saying "my precious" (sorry, couldn't resist).

PlayStation 3DarkZero (Feb 08, 2009)
Right now, things must be pretty bleak over at Pandemic. Mercenaries 2 was fun for a while, but the quality of the original game couldn’t quite outshine the ugly, buggy mess that made up the majority of the sequel. Their other work-in-progress, the almost guaranteed to be lucrative Dark Knight movie tie-in, was canned by EA for being, supposedly, poor quality. Now this, what should’ve been a sure-fire success in Lord of the Rings: Conquest, turns out to be something hard to recommend to even the biggest Tolkien geeks on the planet. How the developer of Star Wars: Battlefront and the publishers of the Battlefield series let this one out the door in this state I will never understand.

While Conquest isn’t the putrid pile of orc vomit that was The Third Age, it’s by no means the definitive LOTR title that EA and the fans were hoping for. There’s some fun to be had amidst all of the mindless button bashing, but the game could have been so much more. Even hardcore Tolkienites are advised to try a demo or rent this one first before making the purchase.

It’d be too easy to say that Conquest will appeal only to diehard Tolkien fans; in fact, they’re the ones most likely to hate it. The next time we go back to Middle-earth, we really, really hope it’s because the epic RPG that this license so richly deserves has finally been made.
