In addition to the wonderful story, the cooperative mode promises many hours of game play. The ability to play through the game again using a different line up of characters then you previously used, allows you to attempt different play styles on levels they were not created for.

Now, if you have read my review of Kelly Slater: Pro Surfer, you know that I hate button combo memorization games. However, this game worked for two reasons. First, you only had to worry about pressing the attack buttons in order instead of also having to face a certain direction at particular moments in the combo. Also, I could sometimes just button mash and make great combos. Thank God for button mashing.

It is hard to believe that it has been two years since the first Lord of the Rings movie came out. The Fellowship of the Ring was one of the best movies that had come out in a while, due to its musical score and setting. Last year when the Two Towers was released, I was blown away at how much better that movie was in comparison to the first one. This year we will finally see the conclusion of the trilogy and get prepared to have our minds blown away.

In the end, just like the movie trilogy, EA’s Lord of the Rings games have surpassed my expectations – and then some; Middle Earth never looked and sounded so good in a videogame before. This is both a very happy and a very sad time for me. It's a very happy time because The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King will be in movie theaters in one month. It's also a very happy time because The Return of the King game is out. As you'll soon discover, this game is a work of art, blending the worlds of movies and games together.

Let's get one thing out of the way: I'm not a Lord of the Rings fan. Never have been. It's because of this that I felt so guilty when I started playing The Lord of the Rings: Return of the King and ended up enjoying myself. As Gandalf, I was slicing up throngs of orcs. I was launching a volley of magic attacks to the archers on the other side of the bridge. I was hefting spears from out of the ground with ease and lodging them in the chests of my assailants. And I was enjoying it!

It's like a hammer. When I first played this game, it was like a sledgehammer came down and smashed everything on screen to bits. Everything from the whiz of smoking arrows to the seemingly infinite particles bursting in air to the furious roar of Tree-ents tearing Saruman's damn down, to the omnipresent score ratcheting the tension of the moment to a higher level. When you finish the first level of Lord of the Rings: Return of the King, your ears will ring, your eyes will flash and you'll want more.

Truly a movie tie-in, the game has unlockable portions that are similar to the extras found on DVDs. Short vignets on the creation of the game and aspects of the film present more background on how the game and film tie together. For diehard fans of the series, those that most likely already have the first two game as well as DVD of the first two films, this game is definitely part of the Lord of the Rings experience and a must-own.

Normalerweise breche ich nicht so schnell in Begeisterungsstürme aus, aber: Wow, was für ein tolles Spiel! Wer (wie ich) als Kind auch davon geträumt hat, ein echter Held zu sein, darf diese Fantasie in Die Rückkehr des Königs voll ausleben. Empfehlung für alle, die gerne mit Freunden zocken: Unbedingt den Koop-Modus probieren, denn im Duett macht Orkmetzeln gleich doppelt so viel Spaß. Auch wenn es nur an einem PC und nicht über LAN oder Internet funktioniert. So schön die Kamera-Einstellungen anzuschauen sind: Wenn ich aufgrund eines merkwürdigen Perspektivwechsels auch nur kurz die Übersicht verliere, kann das in späteren Levels schon das Aus für meinen Charakter bedeuteten. Als wenn das nicht schon nervig genug wäre, muss ich dann auch noch minutenlange Abschnitte erneut bestreiten. Doch damit sind damit auch schon alle Kritikpunkte des famosen Action-Spiels aufgelistet.

If you're a fan of the movies, books, or the previous games, Return of the King is right up your alley. The game's technical flaws are minor, and the game's only other negative point is that it's somewhat short. After you've beaten the game you can go back and play levels with different characters, though this isn't much incentive to go back. Online play, which is PS2 exclusive, is a nice addition, but ROTK isn't really a game that lends itself to online play. There's not much strategy involved, but the ability to play co-op offline was a glaring oversight in the previous games, and is nicely implemented into ROTK. Even if you're just a casual fan of the franchise, Return of the King is a solid fighting/adventure game that isn't likely to disappoint.

Lord of the Rings: Return of the King is, indeed, a modern day Golden Axe, but ratcheted up to massive levels of production. With excellent sound, graphics, and theatrical work bolstering it, Return of the King is a hardcore gamers' game with tremendous mass market appeal. There is nothing wrong with that. In fact, it's just what old school gamers have been yammering about for years. ("Man, remember when we used to play BLANKITY BLANK in the arcades? That was awesome.")

Toegegeven, het had allemaal wel wat langer mogen duren en het 'wow effect' neemt door de lineaire levels op den duur wel wat af, maar elke fan die zichzelf respecteert, hoort deze titel gewoon in huis te halen.

La possibilité de revivre les affrontements épiques du Seigneur Des Anneaux, ça ne se refuse pas. C'est précisément ce qu'offre le Retour du Roi. Un gameplay solide et bien construit, doublé d'une réalisation classieuse et d'une ambiance époustouflante devraient convaincre les amateurs d'action du potentiel du titre. Et vu le nombre de beat'em all sur PC, ils auraient tort de se priver même si quelques bémols font un peu tâche.

Mir hat bereits der Vorgänger gut gefallen. Doch was Electronic Arts mit Die Rückkehr des Königs auf die Fernsehschirme zaubert, ist einfach nur fantastisch. Die Grafik ist eine wahre Freude und es gibt jede Menge zu bestaunen. Gemeinsam mit dem tollen Soundtrack entsteht ein audiovisueller Hochgenuss. Besonders der geniale kooperative Zweispieler-Modus rockt! Allerdings ist der Schwierigkeitsgrad recht happig und die Checkpoints unglücklich gewählt. Auch die Kamera macht Probleme.

To sum it up, Return of the King is probably the most intense PC game I've played this year after Call of Duty. It is a true action arcade title, which implies an obvious lack of any gameplay depth. The fantastic integration of movie elements, visuals, story, and THX-certified sound, however, make this one of the best arcade action experiences ever. Although the camera work is clunky and far from the potential of modern-day PC games, it doesn't take away from the action too much, and you get used to it pretty quickly. By far the biggest gripe I had with this game is its lack of more replay value. Lack of internet co-op play is a hard blow to any PC gamer.

You're playing it for what it is: a raucous blast through the final chapter in a fantastic film trilogy. It's bigger, longer and smarter than The Two Towers and is a perfect gift for the LOTR fan who somehow didn't run out and buy it immediately. Imagine that a game based on a movie that doesn't suck. Let's just hope Peter Jackson learns a lesson from Lucas and avoids the Ewok catastrophe altogether.

Return of the King is still the linear affair Two Towers was, but now there are multiple paths to follow. The King’s Path follows the central plot of Aragorn, Legolas and Gimli, from acquiring the help of the ancient warrior kings to the final diversion at the Black Gate. The Hobbit path is equally fun and is a bit less chaotic, as you take Sam through the motions while protecting Frodo and even dealing with a certain gigantic spider. Probably the best path is that of the Wizard, in which you take the reigns of the Maia Gandalf himself and basically wipe the floor with, well everything that gets in your way. It’s good to be a god.

If the first Lord of the Rings game from Electronic Arts was helped a lot by the utilization of footage from the first and second movies, then the attempt with this sequel is to let the gameplay itself grow. Of course, Peter Jackson’s cooperation in using film footage is very much still here – as is the priceless voice contributions for the actors. In Return of the King, we see a game that attempts to add some layers to its brawler basics. All of the thrilling swordplay from the first is still here, but the additions almost expose the fact that perhaps more work was needed on the game’s foundation itself.

"O Retorno do Rei" é um excelente jogo para fãs da trilogia que não são experientes no ramo dos videogames ou para aqueles que querem mergulhar ainda mais fundo na trilogia. Se não fosse pelo nome, o game poderia passar como pouco mais do que competente - mas a magia de Tolkien garante uma grande experiência - mesmo que curta - pela maior aventura dos habitantes da Terra-média.

Alles in allem ist "Der Herr der Ringe – Die Rückkehr des Königs" eine recht gelungene Umsetzung der Filme, die allerdings sehr actionbetont ist. Wer sich mit dem etwas eintönigen Prinzip des Hack & Slay anfreunden kann und obendrein die Filme mag, wird hier sicherlich sehr viel Freude haben. Wer jedoch mit den Büchern und vor allem mit den Filmen nichts anfangen kann oder mehr als nur dumpfe Haudraufaction haben möchte, der sollte sich in jedem Fall zuerst die Demo des Spiels zu Gemüte führen und erst dann entscheiden. Außerdem muss man natürlich entscheiden, ob man bereits vor dem Erscheinen des Films so viele Dinge wissen möchte. Die Story des Films wird im Groben verraten und es gibt natürlich einige Filmszenen aus dem dritten und letzten Teil der Trilogie.

If you are a fan of the Lord of the Rings trilogy then this is probably a must-have and for once here is a movie tie in that is actually good fun. The only frustration is the checkpoint hell that you have to put yourself through but then this does raise the stakes and make you concentrate that little bit more. If you're not a fan and have spent the last three years trying to avoid all the Tolkien mania then this is a good game but probably one that you'll want to avoid just like the films. The slash and dash mentally, the fast paced speed of the game and the heavy amount of action won't be everyone's cup of tea. But we certainly enjoyed it.

LOTR immediately plunges you into extremely cinematic game play. This is no exaggeration. The camera moves just like in the movies so not one splendid sight is missed. Hordes of orcs and other nefarious creatures will introduce you to massive amounts of melee combat. A.I. characters move realistically and look great as they battle one another. You can jump in wherever your talents are most needed. Before it's over, you'll feel like a sweat-soaked participant in this epic struggle against the evils of Mordor. At its best, LOTR is a challenging and fun experience.

Originally released as a console game and soon ported to the PC, ROTK has been brought to the Mac by the good people of EA Games and Aspyr Media. The game, like its predecessors, Fellowship of the Ring and The Two Towers, is an action-packed hackfest that pits you against wave after wave of orcs, ghost armies, and other strange and nasty beasts. The gameplay is fast and furious (at times infuriating), the graphics and sound are superb, and the inherent geek factor is high. Yet, for all it brings to the table, does Return of the King really deliver?

The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King features fast-paced, cinematic action with plenty of pick-up-and-play appeal. It captures the sights and sounds of The Lord of the Rings movies and offers lots of DVD-style extras for fans of the movies. On its own merits, it's not a particularly lengthy or complex game, so you should be able to get through most of its content in a weekend. However, it's a great experience while it lasts, and the Lord of the Rings fan will want to hold on to this one for posterity. It does justice to the movies that inspired it--and that's no small feat.

It's a relatively simple action game at heart, but a solid combat system and some extremely intense and cinematic levels make The Return of the King deserving of its name.

EA Games has delivered an outstanding movie-licensed game with an incredibly broad appeal. Middle-earth looks amazing in this game and the action is sweeter than Hobbit ale.

Es schreit ein Ork, man brach ihm's Bein - schuld kann nur der Gandalf sein. Zumindest wenn Sie sich mit dem Fantasy-Rentner in der Adaption von Peter Jacksons Trilogie-Abschluss Die Rückkehr des Königs in die Wälder von Fangorn begeben. Kaum angekommen, stürmen bereits die ersten Orks laut grunzend aus dem Dickicht hervor und der mehrere hundert Jahre alte Sprücheklopfer verwandelt sich plötzlich in eine agile Kampfmaschine.

Die leicht fummelige Maussteuerung ist gewöhnungsbedürftig. Zum Glück stehe ich ohnehin eher auf Game-Padding. Das Checkpunktsystem dagegen nervt. Umgesetzt hat das bestimmt ein männlicher Entwickler, der ob seines Produktes feststellte: „Oje! Mein bestes Stück ist zu kurz und kommt zu schnell zum Ende. Da muss wenigstens eine künstliche Verlängerung her!“ Als Herr der Ringe-Fan hat mir der Titel trotzdem viel Spaß gemacht. Am liebsten spielte ich Legolas. Wegen des Sexappeals? Nein! Der Grund: Die fesche Blondine … äh … der elegante Recke sieht aus wie ich. Da fällt frau die Identifikation nicht schwer.

Ein Ring sie alle zu knechten..... Die Herr der Ringe Trilogie hat ein krönendes Ende gefunden. Ob das Spiel mit dem genialen Zelluloid-Vorbild mithalten kann, lest ihr hier.

Trotz einer bombastischen Präsentation enttäuscht mich Die Rückkehr des Königs. Während die Grafik im Vergleich zum Vorgänger nochmals ordentlich aufgebohrt wurde und vor Detailreichtum nur so strotzt, haben die Entwickler beim Rest leider vieles schlechter gemacht als noch bei Teil 2. Neben einer unübersichtlicheren Kamera und einer wenig durchdachten Steuerung sind es vor allem die fehlenden Rücksetzpunkte, die zusammen mit dem unfairen Schwierigkeitsgrad für zu viele Frustanfälle beim Spieler sorgen. Diese großen Mankos können auch der gelungene Kooperationsmodus und die vielen Interaktionsmöglichkeiten mit der Umwelt nicht mehr kompensieren.

Att som ensam spelare arbeta sig hela vägen från Helms klyfta till Domedagsberget blev en ganska enformig resa kantad av olika svärdskombinationer. Det var inte förrän jag och Love tillsammans gav oss i kast med The Return of the King som det blev kul på riktigt. För det var då, och endast då, som spelets charm trädde fram. Utan det nya inslaget hade jag aldrig stannat i Electronic Arts Midgård.

As a piece of digital merchandise, they simply don't come any more authentic and lavish than ROTK. The fact that it stacks up as a decent game in its own right is definitely a bonus; it's a surprisingly deep, involving and intense hackandslash experience that belies its apparent simplicity. Sure, it's no RPG, it's not an especially big game, but it doesn't outstay its welcome either.

Techniquement solide et avec tout le poids de la trilogie derrière lui, le Retour du Roi n'aura aucun mal à se vendre. C'est pourtant un Beat Them All aux coups sans finesse et aux combats trop faciles, qui repose entièrement sur son ambiance et ses missions scriptées. A réserver aux fans.

Perhaps the novelty is finally wearing thin, but I enjoyed Return of the King far less than The Two Towers. Sure the quality of the graphics and sound are still there, but the gameplay is tiresome, the cameras angles stink, and the new two-player mode is a complete disappointment.
