Even if you are not a fan or have not seen the movie - do yourself a big, big favor and see it - the action and adventure in the game will be appealing. This title, like the One Ring the series follows, has the power to bind everyone in its spell.

I thought Kato was just a sucker for the license, but Two Towers really is a tremendous game. The combat is such that you never have to worry about hitting the wrong Orc, but it doesn’t baby you, either. The graphics are outstanding, and the seamless integration between real-time and FMV cutscenes will take your breath away. The three progressing characters immensely increase the replay. EA, which also gave Xbox gamers Buffy, has done it again with a quality, licensed beat ‘em up.

There is much more to J.R.R. Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings trilogy than just swordplay, but Electronic Arts and developer Stormfront Studios have done such a good job with this game that all you’ll care about is skinning orc hide. Better yet, because of the balanced and effective use of scenes from the movie, you still get a good flavor for the drama and tension inherent in Tolkien’s arching story – even if some important bits from both movies have been left out. Between utilizing the films, the actors’ voices, and offering extras, Two Towers is a blueprint on how to make a very good movie-based game. Of course, you can’t forget the gameplay.

The challenges of conveying the sheer scope, depth, and richness of J.R.R. Tolkien’s novels on the big screen was enough to keep it from being made into a film for years. You might think that EA would have it easy – just sign the license and make the game. Not so. The films’ director, Peter Jackson, did such a masterful job in bringing the many facets of the trilogy to life that I wondered whether this video game’s pure hack n’ slash theme would come off as shallow in comparison. It doesn’t. Two Towers expands wonderfully on the film’s visual brilliance with finely tuned strikes of hard steel.

Stormfront and EA have created a game that not only does the movies/books justice, but are also suprisingly solid titles on their own that any fan of action/beat em up games should have whether they’re LotR fans or not. The graphics and sound are top notch and are straight from the movies in most areas. The gameplay can be repetitive but that’s almost a given for these types of games. Thankfully, the deep fighting system, upgrading ability and awesome boss fights will keep you interested throughout the game.

The lighting could be a little better in this game, a lot of the times you can’t see your character or an enemy good enough. Also camera angles screw you over a lot. But even with those flaws this is very good game. I highly recommend that you buy or rent this game.

Two Towers isn't perfect, and it's pretty far from groundbreaking, but it's undeniably awesome to delve into such an authentic representation of this universe and whup some orc backside. If you?re not a Tolkien fan, shave a full point off the Fun Factor score. But if you are, prepare for this adventure with the same wide-eyed glee that you anticipated the movies with.

But like I said earlier, if the third movie was included in this it would be better, since the game doesn’t take long to beat.

When it's all said and done, Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers is hands-down the most faithful movie to game conversion ever made. I can most certainly guarantee that it will remain that until EA releases the already much anticipated "The Return of the King" this coming November. Until then, make sure you purchase yourself a copy of The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers. It's one of the most enjoyable titles on the PS2, and certainly one of the most pleasing titles to look at. The presentation and the DVD extras are a sure treat to any Tolkien fan that plays this. Finally, to those who have yet to see the first two movies, all three of you, don't worry, it's absolutely spoiler free.

Overall, Lord of the Rings fans probably have this game already in their collection, and beam about it often. However, action gamers or fans of solid gameplay should seriously pick up this game even if they don't like fantasy based upon the game mechanics and the technical skill demonstrated by EA in bringing this masterpiece from the literary page and the big screen over to the small screen.

These issues aside, Stormfront have delivered a truly polished and fun game that picks an appropriate format for the license and implements it professionally. Too often we have seen licensed properties straddling genres in an attempt to cover all the bases and be all things to all people, and almost invariably the result is poor. Stormfront wisely chose to concentrate on one play style and to do it well, and the results are their reward. If you can stomach the short length, then buying the Two Towers will provide you with an ideal addition to that growing DVD collection.

The Two Towers is good, twitchy action-fun. Based on the movie, this fast-action style beat-'em-up is well adorned with great supporting elements from quality sound, graphics and other movie-related resources. There is no doubt that EA has beat the bad movie-to-game formula, integrating a wealth of movie assets into a game that neither looks nor feels like it's been hampered by movie license red tape. In fact, it looks like the opposite. EA has stuffed this game with an enormous level of excellent stuff from both movies, resulting in a real treat of a game, especially for Tolkien fans. That in itself is a great thing.

The Lord of the Rings, The Two Towers is a traditional action game with a terrific gameplay system that encourages you to battle it out like there's no tomorrow. This system is difficult to master, which really adds a lot to the game's replay value. Most of the levels are set up in a way that makes them fun and easy to replay with other characters. Fans of the first film will definitely want to pick this one up, but those who enjoy action games in general will also find a lot to like here, in spite of the game's short length.

Although the videogame industry is still in its youth, there is an old adage that goes something like this: "Movie-games suck." It's not a pretty saying, nor does it make sense for the publisher or the buyer for movie-based games to stink. Instead, movie-based game should be great. But we can't count the times we have slogged through endless hours of games designed inside the marketing box, controlled by the movie studio's notion of a game, and restricted for numerous other license-based reasons.

Still, you can't beat the game's presentation?the glorious visuals, real cast voice-overs, and Howard Shore score are so faithful to the film it's frightening, and the Xbox graphics are even cleaner than the PS2 version's. In a way, that's sort of a drag?the PS2 grit layer served to make the game even more cinematic but not enough of a drag that you should be turned away. Few movie-licensed games have been.

At the end of the night, when the sun is coming up, your eyes are exhausted and your head begs for a pillow, The Two Towers leaves you with a feeling of satisfaction. Due to the game's extremely short length, that feeling isn't as strong as it should be. However, the replay value is pretty high, making me want to play through the game all over again immediately after it ended. And with three different playable characters to choose from, the experience isn't exactly the same each time around. You'll use different fighting techniques, different attacks and come up with different strategies to solve the many problems that you're faced with. The movie-to-game sequences are blended together so well that you'll wonder why other developers didn't do it sooner. Electronic Arts has a real winner on their hands with this one, and so will any gamer who chooses to buy it.

Electronic Arts' The Lord of the Rings, The Two Towers is a traditional hack-and-slash action game that features great gameplay mechanics, stunning visuals, and lots of extras that Lord of the Rings fans are sure to enjoy. The only negative aspect of the game is that it's relatively short, but with three playable characters and a ton of unlockable content, The Two Towers does have a good bit of replay value.

What adds to the frustration is that Frodo and Gandalf seem like they were originally intended to be fully playable characters, as they both feature very complete character models and seemingly complete move sets, from what one can fathom watching their NPC personas battle alongside you. By excluding these two highly important characters, the developers essentially removed at least one third, if not an entire half of the movie experience from consideration as opportunities for gameplay. To add insult to injury, this game would own had the developers included the simultaneous two (or even three) player multiplayer mode that the gameplay positively screams for. Unfortunately, it remains strictly a short, single player affair.

As we've all witnessed the pretty damn special Two Towers movie, now is the ideal time to play through the game, without ruining the second film's experience. Or, you can play the first four levels, stop and go to the cinema, and then come back again without having the film spoiled for you; despite the title of this game, only around 60 percent of the action is related to the second movie. The game ends naturally with a massive Helms Deep excursion that makes the less-thrilling stages (such as a tiresome woodland romp through the annoyingly narrow pathways of Fangorn Forest) seem more crappy than they actually are.

XboxIGN
A couple of months ago, EA released Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers on PS2. The game looked stunning on Sony's console and I couldn't wait for the port over to Xbox. Having heard so many good things, I expected a lot from The Two Towers, but I'm somewhat disappointed in this decent beat-em-up, which comes with far too many limitations and nagging annoyances to be worthy of quite such high praise that's been thrown around. It's good, it's fun, and if you enjoyed the first two Lord of the Rings movies, you'll probably dig it. But The Two Towers is more a case of "Oh wow, they made a decent licensed game" than "it's innovative and fantastic to play."

XboxThe Video Game Critic
My main beef is the lack of a two-player mode. It's particular puzzling since most levels feature two fighters fighting side-by-side, one controlled by the CPU. The camera can be a pain at times, but it's not a showstopper. Lord of the Rings The Two Towers is a good looking game that should appeal to those who can't get enough of the films.

XboxXBox Solution (XBS)
Though the game itself is short, you'll find yourself
replaying it a few times with all the different characters, trying to get each
to as high a level as possible, and collecting all the combos. There is even
a secret character and secret level for you to unlock, as well. There's
even quite a few extra interviews and footage from the movies hidden on this
DVD, all waiting to be unlocked. The game can be beaten on Easy mode in a few
hours, but you'll likely have to replay a few of the levels several times.
In hard mode, the game becomes quite unforgiving, even with
maxed-out characters. Unfortunately, there is no two-player mode, and this
title practically screams out for it. The simple addition of multiplayer
would've extended the life on this one for hours.

In the end, The Two Towers is a game that is made for fans of the movie. It offers good action mechanics and an opportunity to actively participate in some key moments of the movie. In that regard, The Two Towers is better than the average sloppy movie adaptation. However, in terms of delivering a complete game, The Two Towers falls short of the mark.

Presentation aside, LotR: The Two Towers is still a pretty good attempt at translating the first two LotR movies into a competent action game. It's somewhat short (maybe five hours per character) and isn't the best action game you'll ever play, but it is the best action game based on The Lord of the Rings. For fans looking for a way to play their favorite books or movies, this is the best bet at the moment. That said, the less hardcore would do well to give it a rental first.

The Two Towers is a fun experience that is probably best played over a rental due to its length and lack of replay value. There are some incentives for Ring fans to keep playing though, so anyone interested in Tolkien's work would not do wrong picking this up.

All in all, EA simply needed to either include more levels or make the current ones longer and add a Multiplayer mode to make this a perfect game. Almost there EA, just stay focused with the sequel.

With the PlayStation 2 being all "inferior" to the Xbox's presumed power, and the two months of extra development time, surely E.A. must have added an extra aiming reticule for the archery, increased the framerate from 30, sculpted a few more polygons on the main heroes and adversaries, and added reflections to the underwater orcs and other badly realized reflections. Well, don't bet on it, Bilbo. There are absolutely no differences between this, the GameCube, and the PlayStation 2 versions, aside from some miniscule tidying of the jagged polygons from the PS2 original.
