Mistwalker should be proud that they created an ambitious traditional role-playing game at the level of Lost Odyssey. Lost Odyssey touches the gamer on many different levels with its caring storyline, explosive battles and metamorphosing plot developments. The presentation in the graphics and audio help put the whole game together creating a beautiful amalgamation showcase some best talent seen in both areas. If you’re a fan of traditional role-playing games, or love games with an endearing story then you will likely fall in love with the dynamic intimacy Lost Odyssey provides. Despite being challenged because of its traditional roots, Lost Odyssey embraces them and turns on a memorable gaming experience that will be remembered for years to come.

There is a good reason why it took a little longer than it should have for this review to get up on the site. It is really hard to put the controller down. Even with the release of Super Smash Bros. Brawl (see Super Smash Bros. Brawl review) I am still putting this game on. The story is deep, character development is strong and the music is beyond good. If you are an RPG fan then buy this game right now!

I know some people will hate this score, as it's up there with Gears of War and BioShock. However, you have to take into consideration its score against other RPGs. Blue Dragon got a 90, Eternal Sonata a 92. This game is much better than both. I never score a game against something of a different genre, and neither should you. Plain and simple, this is the best RPG I've played in a long, long time and by far the best available for the 360 at the moment. I did really like Eternal Sonata and Blue Dragon was a breath of fresh air after the 360's earlier efforts, but they somewhat pale in the greatness that is Lost Odyssey. Amazing graphics, audio, gameplay and story. Really nothing more you could ask for in a game.

Console Monster
With everything considered, is Lost Odyssey the best RPG experience on the market? If it isn’t it’s making a strong push towards being one, at least being the best on the Xbox 360. It is however near the top as far as an intimate storyline and a true JRPG. Lost Odyssey is definitely not a game for the pick-up-and-play gamer, it is for the committed gamer who has a true understanding of what a JRPG is supposed to be. And ultimately, it makes for a lovely gaming experience that you will always remember.

But they were the only part of the game I'd use words like that to describe AND they are optional, so I'm not going to complain too much! Lost Odyssey is one of the finest J-RPGs I've played in years, combining solid mechanics with an unforgettable story that's light years beyond the generic cookie-cutter plots I almost expect to see from this genre. Heck, even if you're not a fan of this sort of game, I'd still advise you to suck it up and play it just to read the "A Thousand Years of Dreams" collection.

What you'll find here is a mix between the PS1-era Final Fantasy titles, the Shadow Hearts games (thanks to former Nautilus employees moving to Feel+), and a perfectly crafted old-school JRPG with high production values. It may be as close to a Square Enix epic as Xbox owners will get, but in some regards it outclasses them, and that's something that should not be missed.

Play Magazine
With its meandering story and limited innovations, Lost Odyssey feels more workmanlike than inspired. But there’s no denying that it’s an exceptionally well-made game, and that Mistwalker has delivered again on its mission of producing traditional Japanese RPGs with epic amounts of content and next-gen production values. If you’re expecting a revolution, you may come away disappointed. But if you’re a fan of the genre, you’ll appreciate Lost Odyssey’s exceptional craftsmanship from start to finish.

There are a number of gameplay flaws, particularly in the areas of difficulty and monotony (turn-based games are quite dull when compared to their more modern kin), but underneath it all there's still a lot to love about the title. If you are in the mood for an epic, old-school, meaningful RPG, then it's hard to go wrong with Lost Odyssey.

In the end, Lost Odyssey won't change your perception of RPG's, but rather remind you of why you love them.

To bring things to a close, it seems like a bit of a cop out to end on the suggestion that if you like JRPG's then you'll like this otherwise don't bother, but it's genuinely the best advice I can offer. This is a beautiful, involving, epic example of its type but those for whom the genre holds no interest aren't going to be converted by a game that rarely offers the innovation you may have been expecting and conforms to more of the old frustrations than it probably should. Speaking personally I loved it, which explains the big score, but I understand there will be those of you who fail to see where the attraction is and nothing I can say will change that.

In many ways Lost Odyssey is a very traditional console RPG. If you’re like us you’ll certainly have no problem with that. In fact, a traditional console RPG very much in the same vein as the Final Fantasy series is just what many 360 owners wanted and Lost Odyssey truly delivers. It also has a few unique twists of its own that work well. It’s a shame that there are some frame rate dips and frequent (although never long) load times to put up with but on the whole the quality of the storyline and the overall quality of the game more than compensates for any technical niggles. Lost Odyssey is definitely a game that every RPG enthusiast should play and it’s definitely one of the best Xbox 360 RPGs to date.

Mistwalker seemed to be nothing more than a hype machine by Microsoft to gain some Japanese support. Blue Dragon was okay, but ultimately boring and forgettable, while Lost Odyssey borders on the excellence we have seen from Sakaguchi in the past. If the gameplay could have evolved a tad bit compared to what we’ve seen before it would have been a nearly flawless game. The characters alone make Lost Odyssey an adventure worth having. At no point will this be a boring game for any fan of the genre, and it’s a game that really could push Xbox 360 sales overseas. It really is an absolute delight and a real surprise.

Game Freaks 365
Even though the game is four discs, do not think that you are getting a 100 hour game out of Lost Odyssey. The bulk of each disc is in the numerous cutscenes that you will encounter. Only expect to receive a 30-40 hour experience that will include many interesting battles, characters, and plot twists. Lost Odyssey is definitely one of the better RPGs of this generation. It is right up there with the likes of Mass Effect and Oblivion while being entirely different. If you are a fan to these traditional RPGs, or are new to the way turn based RPGs work, Lost Odyssey will definitely open your eyes to just how enjoyable they can be once again.

As thankful as I am that there are role-playing titles that strive to innovate, I am also glad that games like Lost Odyssey are still being made. It is a testament to the philosophy that time-tested concepts, when implemented well, can be just as gratifying as they were at the genre's inception.

Lost Odyssey is a game which will be liked by many RPG lovers. The game doesn't try to recreate the genre, but if you were a fan of previous Final Fantasy games you will enjoy this title as well. With 4 dvd’s, packed with high quality movies and the beautiful stories of the memories, you have a game which will give the player hours of fun on both visuals and gameplay.

Drawn-out cut-scenes detach players from the action, but the written word requires the use of imagination and introspection, forcing you to explore Kaim's past experiences - stories that revolve around such diverse topics as unjust imprisonment, racism, and suicide. In fact, I'd like to see these refreshingly adult themes expanded on further in a sequel. Just one request, Mr. Sakaguchi: Leave the kids at home next time, OK?

Four disks mean you’ll be at it for a while, and if this is completely your type of game, we’ll likely not hear from you for months, however, if you’re just getting into the Eastern RPG realm, its scope and length might prove something of a deep-end. One thing’s for sure, this is a game you can’t simply hire for the weekend. If you’re willing to take the jump though, there’s a lot here to really like. Here’s hoping the Japanese think so too, so Microsoft might actually get a leg up over there.

If you’re a fan of the genre and are tired with the lack of decent RPG’s on the Xbox 360 then you can’t go wrong with Lost Odyssey. Brilliantly written, atmospheric with an intriguing plot that will keep you hooked till the end. We eagerly await Mistwalkers next release in the series.

All told, Lost Odyssey doesn't have that many big weaknesses. The major "problem" with the game is that it doesn't do enough to push the genre forward. Lost Odyssey suffers because not only has it not taken the genre forward, but it also could be argued that it hasn't even kept up with the advancements that have been made in the genre over the last several years. It makes a few intelligent tweaks to the established formulas and offers players a great cast of characters to feel for, but it's not a game experience that you haven't played the primary elements of hundreds of times before. That's only a problem for those who are growing tired of the traditional JRPG formula or never bought into to begin with, but there's no doubt the genre is on the verge of extinction on this side of the Pacific and strict adherence to tradition is not like to turn any fortunes around.

Good Game
I think it comes down to knowing what you’re getting – The cover of this game makes it look like an action-packed epic. But 70 percent of it is running around talking to people, watching emotional cutscenes and reading short stories. I’m gunna wrap this up with an 8/10 Rubber chickens

Adrenaline Vault, The (AVault)
While I would have preferred a little more challenge, particularly in the arena of combat, I found Lost Odyssey to be a completely immersive and enjoyable experience. The stellar graphics, beautiful musical score, and captivating storyline made this an adventure well worth taken and one that I can’t wait to complete.

Planet Xbox 360
Despite its flaws, Lost Odyssey is hands-down the best turn-based RPG on Xbox 360. That might not sound like a ringing endorsement, given the dearth of options, but Lost Odyssey does get more right than wrong. If you despise turn-based RPGs, Lost Odyssey is not the game to transcend the genre and change your mind, but if you enjoy the long, grinding gameplay and epic storylines, it might just remind you of why you fell in love with them to begin with.

ActionTrip
The four-disc 360-exclusive could treat you to somewhere between 35 and 50 hours of gameplay. I recommend it to JRPG fans. Should you be the kind of person who prefers western-style RPGs the likes of KotOR or Mass Effect, Lost Odyssey may feel as a slight disappointment. The immersion is there, the gameplay can be fun, but overall, Lost Odyssey fails to "go the distance" as a modern-day RPG. Whilst it offers a unique twist to the genre, it definitely lacks more content and depth to be regarded as a truly great RPG. Hardcore RPG gamers won't find it rewarding enough.

Game Over Online
When you get right down to it, Lost Odyssey plays like a mediocre Final Fantasy game, which isn’t so bad really. Hell, some Final Fantasy games have played like mediocre Final Fantasy games, and if you’re a 360 owner who loves classic RPGs you’re going to want to play it. It looks great, and even if it isn’t the best role-playing game ever it falls well short of the worst. If the RPG scene was as ripe with kickass games as the shooter market is it would be easy to suggest giving Lost Odyssey a pass, but given the dearth of quality role-playing titles it really is a must have for RPG fans. Its flaws are at times almost tangible, but it remains mostly enjoyable despite them and it is a substantial chunk of gaming to sink your teeth into. Don’t expect too much out of it and you won’t be disappointed.

Game Revolution
As a last hoorah to the turn-based JPRG (though, I hope this certainly won’t be the last one of this magnitude), Lost Odyssey accomplishes what it sets out to do. Nothing that it does, apart from its high production values, are examples of how to do the genre complete justice, but for a first outing for Microsoft, it’s more than satisfactory. Though Lost Odyssey won’t change your mind about turn-based JRPGs, it fills the void of the genre with a well-paced and pleasing aesthetic, and a healthy dose of nostalgia.

Good Game
Ultra-linear with a strong story, if you’re into Final Fantasy, you’ll be into this. And it’s good enough to bring in newcomers, too. I didn’t get tired of the turn-based combat, in fact I got a bit addicted to it, and 4 DVD’s of cutscenes is quite massive. 7/10 from me.

Lost Odyssey is a serious step up from predecessor 'Blue Dragon'. With gorgeous graphics (mostly), some terrific scripting, and probably the most heart-wrenching story ever conceived in a video game, Lost Odyssey presents a beautiful, filmic experience. However, coupled with the lengthy storyline, and some solid gameplay elements, this raises the game up to be a superior RPG, which is highly recommended if you have the time and patience to complete the 40-hour plus storyline.

I’ve been looking forward to this game for two years (since back when GameStop’s release calendar accidentally listed it as a January 2006 release), and while I’m certainly satisfied with what I’ve got as an avid RPG fan, I’m not in any way impressed with this effort. While many of the problems that I have with the game recede around the middle of the second disc, at that point you’ve already suffered through fifteen hours of below average role playing game, which makes recommending this game to anybody that wouldn’t be interested in it to begin with a lot like suggesting that unanesthetized bowel surgery doesn’t hurt so much after the first six hours. If you’re a fan of classic-style RPGs looking for a fix, you could do worse than Lost Odyssey, but there’s no reason for anybody who wouldn’t otherwise be interested in the genre to spend any time at all with this game.

When you're saddling up to sink over 50 hours into an RPG, you need an epic story that will sustain your interest over the long haul. Unfortunately, an affecting collection of anecdotes isn't enough on it's own to elevate any game from merely worthwhile to truly memorable, not eve one with high production values and a pedigree as storied as Lost Odyssey's.

Hironobu Sakaguchi created many of the genre conventions that define the Japanese RPG so it should come as no surprise the much of Lost Odyssey smacks of "been there and done that." The main story is forgettable, the lack of combat information is disappointing, and the cutscenes are numerous. But through it all I was having fun in battle and looked forward to finding each additional heart-wrenching memory.

We have immense respect for what Lost Odyssey tries to do: be a back-to-basics JRPG with modern technological trimmings on the 360. Unfortunately, it's less a celebration of what made older RPGs great and more a crude relic of their past. When we were a half-dozen hours in, we had hope that the combat mechanics would gain some depth and that the storytelling would find its rhythm. We're still ready to forgive the technical issues, if only Lost Odyssey could come together as a game. 360 owners desperate for something turn-based with magic in it can turn to Lost Odyssey for some comfort, but for the majority of genre fans that time would be better spent replaying one of the classics from which Lost Odyssey draws so heavily.
