Was Luigi's Mansion worth picking up? I think so. While it is a bit on the short side, there is some replay value (I got an "E" rating on my first go, so replaying in an attempt to grab the "A" is worthwhile). The graphics are excellent, and the sound above par. The game is just a lot of fun, and certainly something different. Nintendo decided to try something different, and it has paid off.

Edutaining Kids
Luigi's Mansion is a fun escapade for the Game Cube. It features detailed graphics, holds a good measure of suspense, and requires a bit of strategy to complete. Though older kids will probably finish the game sooner than they'd like, Luigi's Mansion will entertain the younger crowd faithfully for quite some time.

I love this game, and it's certainly going to be keeping me up many a night until I complete it and save poor old Mario. Mario returns in light-hearted and refreshing fashion,

I didn’t have the highest of expectations for this release, but Luigi’s Mansion turned out to be the surprise hit of the year. Even though it is a departure from the Mario lineage, it still harbors the classic feel that we all know and love.

Game Informer Magazine
The game itself is just a cute little adventure that has the main character using a vacuum cleaner which makes for an interesting game mechanic, but nothing revolutionary as far as I’m concerned. If you pick up a GameCube, Luigi’s Mansion is pretty much a given. I was just hoping for more, because any gamer with some experience will blow through this title fairly quickly.

A lot of people have written Luigi's Mansion off as a poor man's Mario, a kid's game that is way to easy. Don't be put off by this. LM is well worth the look- it delivers a fun experience- that while short is very rewarding. The puzzles aren't brain-numbingly hard but provide enough variety and challenge to keep even the most hardened gamer interested. In hindsight, SMS might have been a better launch title, but Luigi's Mansion is a nice addition to any 'Cuber's collection. Luigi has arrived.

Overall, the graphics make Luigi's Mansion stand out even amongst the top titles in video games today. There's truly a huge improvement in the sound effects of the new game, when in comparison to the older Mario games. Throughout the gameplay, Luigi actually has a set of vocal chords that are interestingly involved with the game's main theme. Luigi can call out to his brother, not just in one way, but also in more than a few preprogrammed patterns. Not only that, but Luigi actually whistles along with the mansion's music, pacing the bright and dim floors. It's not bad, it's not great... but it fits.

Retro Spirit Games
Luigi's Mansion is seriously good fun to play, with a great sense of humour, atmospheric and spot-on spooky visuals, quirky music and sound effects, some imaginative boss encounters, and satisfying ghost catching mechanics. It may not take you very long to finish, but it is sweet while it lasts.

Però... però... forse piacerà solo a chi è cresciuto a pane e Super Mario.

Edge
Churls might moan about some of the well-worn motifs in the game. Collecting hearts for energy and keys from chests for doors are hackneyed, but they only act as symbols for navigating the game space rather than gameplay elements in themselves. It is Nintendo’s ability to constantly surprise and reward while maintaining the wonderfully creepy atmosphere that keeps you playing on. The desire to explore just one more location before switching off never really goes away. Fears Luigi’s Mansion was going to have a short lifespan have been put to rest. Though it’s no epic, it will take longer than you expect to complete. Thankfully, the number of times that you laugh, flinch, and have your breath taken away are numerous enough to warrant at least another jaunt through the creaky house.

Nintendo Life
What Luigi's Mansion lacks in content and longevity, it makes up for with a remarkably well-crafted and unique single campaign that will keep you consistently entertained from front to back. It's not quite on the same level as Mario's better outings, but the game is so entirely different from anything Mario has ever starred in that it feels almost unjust to compare them; and, really, it's this complete departure from the Mario formula that makes the game so successful in the first place. The gameplay design is so uncommon that it's pretty difficult to slap a genre label on it, but suffice to say that if you consider yourself a gamer, you owe it to yourself to give this one a shot.

Luigi's game doesn't stand up to well to previous Mario Bros. games in terms of lifespan, and by the time its starts getting challenging you find him in a comical final battle against Bowser. Finding and vacuuming all the Boos in the game does make for a fun (and optional) distraction, but there isn't much to keep you playing.

All in all, a great showcase piece, but hardly anything to go ga-ga over. My opinion, get it. It’s a great game, and deserves to be a part of everyone’s game collection.

GameSpot
Luigi's first solo excursion has flashes of brilliance and is fun while it lasts, but the short amount of time it takes to complete it makes it a hard recommendation. There is some incentive to play through the game a second time, but even that can be done within an average rental period. If you're a serious video game collector or just want a game that will adequately show off your new console, Luigi's Mansion is worth picking up. But for everyone else, a trip to the local rental shop should suffice.

I really did like this game, despite some of the ratings. You may hear other things, but I think that this game deserves, at the least, a rental. Fun, original, exciting, and it is finally another Luigi title. I just wish it was longer, and had better replay value. Oh well, maybe they'll make a 'Luigi's Mansion II.' Ha.

GameSpy
It looks great, plays well, and is pretty unique (which is becoming more and more unusual these days) but the bottom line is that although Luigi's Mansion is a technically competent and fun title, it really lacks any kind of longevity or replay value and can become a tad repetitive. Once you've trekked through the mansion once and explored every room, there's very little pulling power to make you replay the game. This wouldn't necessarily be an issue, but I'm pretty confident that most players won't break into a sweat beating this one in about six hours from start to finish.

Nintendo Difference

Some of the puzzles are tough, and even in the early going some gamers are bound to become stuck. Even so, there are a lot of little things about the game that will make you smile, like hearing the Super Mario Bros. theme in the music room, or discovering a hidden switch only visible from a mirror on the far wall. The graphics are good but unspectacular, although there are some slick lighting and fog effects. The clammy brick walls in the basement really caught my eye. The audio contains a number of catchy tunes in the minor key, and rich digitized sound effects are interspersed with old-school style sound cues. Luigi's Mansion tends to be under-appreciated, but GameCube fans will definitely want this one in their collection.

The game will give you 8+ hours of fun, but doesn't warrant a full-dollar purchase. This is classic rent-bait and easily beaten within five days. The younger gamer will get even more game time out of it, and although the youngin's might not appreciate the complexity of the graphics; they will however have a ball playing it 'till the wee hours of the night. For parents considering a game for the GC, this is a must have for your tike.

While Luigi’s Mansion is in no way trying to be the next Mario game, Mario Sunshine will do that next summer, it does fill the void for some Mario Brother action until we get our real fix with Sunshine. The game does have some flaws and it is clearly obvious that this is not an EAD game, but this is what we got for launch, and with the release of Smash Bros. Melee last week, it is more than enough to keep us going, and keep praising Nintendo for making quality games.

Game Revolution
Luigi's Mansion may not be a straight up winner, but I wouldn't call his first game a loser at all. The replay value is suspect and the one enormous dungeon mansion can grow tiring, but the graphics are quite beautiful and the interesting game mechanics are enjoyable. The game is clearly geared for a younger audience, but even adult gamers will have some fun. And a note to Luigi - get yourself some acting lessons and a girlfriend.

Luigi's Mansion is fun. In fact, it's five or six of the best hours you can spend on any system this year. Unfortunately, that's all that it is. I can't recommend this as a purchase to anyone, except younger players, Mario Bros. loyalists, or launch completists. That said, Luigi's Mansion is a perfect weekend rental. Don't cheat yourself out of some quality ghost busting.

Game Freaks 365
Luigi's Mansion was pretty disappointing for me and a false look at where the GameCube was going. I felt as though Nintendo had lost its touch forever after this game, but I was surely wrong. Way too short, repetitive, and corny music/storyline describe Luigi's Mansion to its fullest. Please don't buy this game, at least rent it first (and then you'll never play it again, because there's no replay value).

Eurogamer.net (UK)
Luigi's Mansion is a delightful little game, instantly appealing to anybody with more than a passing interest in its heritage, but it isn't the GameCube equivalent of those platform classics I name-checked at the start of the review. A competent, atmospheric adventure and truly a new direction for the characters, but at this length it simply isn't worth the £35, let alone the cost of the console. If Miyamoto's vision of shorter games more often is to become reality, then the pricing structure will need serious adjustment...

NintendoWorldReport
50 bucks for 10 hours of possible gameplay is really difficult for me to suggest. Sure it's a Shigeru Miyamoto game, but it's a lot of money to pay for such a short game…no matter how good it is.

IGN
It's a dark, spooky night in the woods as Mario's brother approaches an ominous mansion that seems to warn visitors away with its very presence. Luigi doesn't particularly want any business with the place, but it's his new home – he received word that he won the eerie location in a contest that he doesn't even remember entering. And he's supposed to meet Mario inside at midnight for a quick tour.

UOL Jogos
