Digital Press - Classic Video Games
The only thing I didn't like about this game was the lack of a 2-player mode. This game is for TRUE racing game experts, it's the most challenging racer I have ever played, even more so than Sega's Daytona. If you can handle this game, you can handle any racing game. I used to stink at Daytona on Saturn but mastering this game helped me blow through Daytona, a game which I have since discovered is nowhere near as challenging as Checkered Flag. To sound cliché, this is a cool racing game. I have had as much fun with it as I do Daytona and GT2. Like some people you first meet, Checkered Flag may give some bad first impressions, but once you get to know it, it grows on you.
It might be best to rent this cart to see if you have the patience to master the controls. Unfortunately, Checkered Flag misses the checkered flag.
This is REBELLION, the creators of AVP? Wha?? Muddy control, absurd AI and incredibly frustrating play add up to an extremely flat racer that the supposedly inferior Virtua DLX runs circles around.
Video Games & Computer Entertainment
The Jaguar version, on the other hand, is like a poor man's Virtua Racing, with big, blocky polygons and lousy control. Never mind pinpoint steering; it's just plain hard to stay on the track. It's nice that there are ten different tracks and six different viewpoints, but polygons are polygons, no matter what the camera angle. Some decent options, but the choppy animation and lack of multi-player support nearly kill this one.
Just Games Retro
Checkered Flag alone isn't horrible, and there's certainly enough tracks and options on the cart to make it worth the money. However, when you throw in a jerky framerate and controls that use a different methodology than any other arcade racer out there, it starts to pale in comparison. It could easily have been a hell of a contender at its release, and brought the Jag some much-needed positive press, but bad code, better competition, and oversold promises drove this one right off the bridge.
The Video Game Critic
This game is shockingly bad. At first glance, you can tell it's a Virtua Racing clone, but nothing can prepare you for the choppy animation and heinous control. The blocky graphics are actually a step down from the Genesis version of Virtua Racing. There are ten tracks but they're very boring and all look the same. The music sounds like a two-year old on a keyboard. The poor framerate and heavy oversteering are what make this game unplayable. Checkered Flag makes Virtua Racing look like Ridge Racer.
