It is always easy to criticize Spiderweb games based on fairly simple graphics - this remains true, but everything here is done in higher resolution and looks better than any previous entry in the series. This is definitely one of the best role-playing games of the year, and is friendly to those new to the series as well as veterans. Hints that pop up as you play the early sections of the game get you immediately immersed, but there is depth of control and party management that defies mastery. You will find yourself pulled into extended 'one more battle' gaming sessions, yet the journal is clear enough that you can walk away for quite a while and then hop back into it effortlessly. It runs on just about any Mac or PC and is available as a small download from Spiderweb Software, making it easy to try out. As I have said before - what Avernum 5 lacks in visual presentation, it makes up with immersive story-telling and engaging gameplay.

Traditional RPG fans will thoroughly enjoy this game, with many character customization options and a dense story line to gobble up. But if you’re looking for a high-end role-playing experience, you’ll probably be left hungry.

Overall, Avernum 5 is a solid continuation of the Avernum series. If you're looking for another RPG fix or are a fan of the other games released by Spiderweb Software, Avernum 5 is a must buy.

Avernum 5 is similar to Kivi’s Underworld without the fast paced myriads of attacking zombies in random battles. It has an intense story line, over 50 spells, many unusual encounters with foes and villains. The play to kill the enemies is to click on the bad guys and the movements can be fast and easily handled even for a casual gamer looking to getting into RPG games. Avernum 5 is a good starter game for all those new to the play.

Despite its faults, Avernum 5 is a wonderful role-playing game which I can't recommend enough. Even if you've never played any other Avernum or Exile game, you can pick this one up and get as fascinated by Avernum and the Empire as I am. You won't be disappointed by your adventures through the many deep caverns and interesting people you'll meet along the way.
