Description

The End of Peace is the first episode of Blues and Bullets, an episodic noir thriller series where the player take control of the real character Elliot Ness, the American Prohibition agent and legendary leader of the law enforcement team nicknamed The Untouchables. It is a cinematic adventure game modeled after the Telltale games, where most of the gameplay is experienced through cinematic sequences, with dialogue options, small portions with free moment, some puzzle-solving elements, and action sequences with shooting or prompts for quick time events. The game emphasizes the investigation mechanics, as the player needs to analyze scenarios, find clues and talk with other characters. As a homage to classic noir film genre, the game is monochromatic with sparse dashes of red.

While the protagonist is based on a real person, the story itself is entirely fictitious and takes place in an alternate history where Ness has left the force and now runs a small restaurant name called Blues and Bullets in the city of Santa Esperanza. The episode consists of five chapters with thirteen scenes that take place in different time periods and are experienced in a non-chronological order. The game opens showing a dungeon where several children are locked up and the player gets to control a little girl. In the present Ness is approached by Al Capone, who still lives, to investigate the childrens' disappearances to bring back his granddaughter Sofia. There are also flashbacks to twenty years earlier, showing how Ness clashed with Capone, how the gangster got away and how Ness came to leave the force.

There are several sequences with free moment and instead of choosing between full dialogue lines, the player often needs to choose an emotion represented through a single word, from multiple options, to steer the conversation in a certain direction. Often there is a time limit before a neutral option or silence is selected automatically. While walking around red eye icons signal parts of the environment where interaction or examination is possible. It is possible to Ness to die, especially during quick time events, but also during sequences with free movement where he needs to hop between cover and aim and shoot enemies.

Each episode has several important choices that shape Ness's character and steer the story with permanent consequences. This choices can be reviewed and are compared worldwide in a separate menu. In a late part of the episode, there is a scene at the house of a character called Boccherini with very different gameplay. There Ness has to piece together what has happened by examining and linking clues. Clues are reviewed in the environment and are then linked on a giant board that represents his mental thought process. Only by making correct corrections does it become possible to progress. While viewing objects up close they can be rotated to reveal additional information. This is the first of five episodes released over time. After completing the episode a brief preview of the next one is provided through audio. It also unlocks a bubble head mode for the game. The remaining four episodes can be bought separately, as small bundles of episodes or as a single season pass as Blues and Bullets: Season Pass, in both cases as DLC. All five episodes can also be bought right away as a single purchase.
