DescriptionClicker Heroes is an idle game about defeating monsters with the help of heroes. Most of the game is played without the player's input. It consists of a series zones split up in groups of five. The player clicks a monster to deal damage and monsters do not fight back. After the first monster is defeated some gold is earned used to hire a hero. From then on the hero attacks by itself to defeat the monsters. With more gold, eventually up to 35 heroes can be hired to fight along. With each new hero or upgraded hero level (in exchange for gold), more damage is dealt. This process is repeated endlessly gradually earning more damage per second and fighting stronger monsters. After the first hero is hired it is possible to let the game idle to farm more gold. It is always possible to return to earlier zones, but these always provide less gold than the newest ones.
The player can and needs to interfere in a number of ways to keep progressing. Zones can be played over and over again, but a click is required to move on to a next zone, with stronger monsters and more gold as a reward, after ten monsters have been defeated. The fifth zone of a series of levels is always against a boss character. This fight is similar, but it has a time limit meaning the player's heroes need to be strong enough and deal enough damage to kill it before time runs out, otherwise it is not possible to progress to the next zone. The player also needs to interfere to spend the gold on upgrades or hiring additional heroes. Gold is picked up automatically, but the cursor can also be moved over the coins after defeating a monster to collect them manually.
After a certain number of upgrades, skills can be unlocked when certain heroes reach a specific level. These skills include stronger attacks with more damage, a bonus that benefits all heroes or more damage and critical hits for the player's attacks. The player can attack along with the heroes by clicking repeatedly on a monster, dealing a small but additional amount of damage with each click. Later on several skills can be unlocked that vastly improve the clicking damage for a limited time for instance. The game continues to farm gold even when the game is not running. For the browser version it is possible to export the current status as a file and then import it again to continue playing next to registering an account to save progress.
Later on through the hero Amenhotep's skill World Ascension ascensions are introduced, which soft reset the game to level 0 for all heroes, but the player keeps all perks and it provides hero souls as an additional currency based on a number of parameters. Hero souls are provided for every 2,000 hero levels through a world ascension. They can also be acquired by defeating centurion bosses (every 100 levels) and the rare primal bosses (after zone 100). Hero souls are used to acquire ancients, which act as powerful and permanent perks. The available ancients can be upgraded and re-rolled for additional hero souls. Multiple ascensions are possible meaning there is no real end to the game. Later updates include a relic system with additional bonuses and the ability to convert relics into forge cores. In August 2015 a clan system was introduced. Players can create and join clans to fight immortals, a new type of enemy, as a cooperative raid. Participation in raids is rewarded with hero souls.
The game is entirely free, but optionally rubies can be bought with real money to support the game and acquire bonuses such as a timelapse, random gilded, stronger heroes, hero souls and ascensions. Certain bonuses are unlocked by earning achievements.
