When you get right down to it, there’s no game that could have heralded the triumphant return of sports games to the Mac like Madden 2000. It’s a flawless example of excellent gameplay combined with the realism die-hard fans desire.
Madden 2000 is an ensemble of stunning graphics and realistic gameplay that will impress any sports fan. For Mac users, Madden 2000 also represents more than a great football game; it marks the first time in recent history that any sports title of any magnitude has found its way to the platform. We can only hope that this just a small glimpse of what's to come.
Commentary gripes aside, I dig this game. It is the first major sports title on the Mac in way too long and in terms of pure gameplay, it is a big winner.
If acceptance of Madden 2000 means more sports games for the Mac, then we should welcome this game with open arms. On the other hand, if other sports games are this annoying, maybe we don't want them. Ultimately, the choice is yours. I really love football, but I also really love games you just boot up and play without having to jump through hoops. Madden 2000 is impressive in many ways -- almost as many ways as it is cumbersome. The thrill of football is missing here. Some excitement made it in, but the thrill isn't there.
Inside Mac Games (IMG)
No sports gamer needs to be convinced to purchase Madden for his or her Macintosh. Neither will they be disappointed with what they find once the game is on their Mac. Madden is the zenith of its genre, and the Mac version is no exception. One can only hope that this game is successful enough this year and in the future to convince EA Sports to send more sports games our way!
Still, Madden NFL 2000 is the best football simulator we've seen on any platform. Aspyr has finally broken the decade-long drought of Macintosh sports games, and has done it in fine style. Let's hope the release marks a new trend. We'd rather not wait another decade to see more fine sports games on the Mac.
