www.nintendo.com – Nintendo 64:
Whimsical animations and sharp AI highlight this pretty version of the capitalistic classic.

With the board-game genre hotter than a fur coat in Death Valley, it was inevitable that Hasbro would bring the most popular tabletop tussle since checkers to the N64.

From Baltic Avenue to the Boardwalk, all the beloved Monopoly elements are here. The top-hatted Community Chest impresario presides over property auctions and hands out authentic Community Chest and Chance cards. Sixty years on, "You have won second prize in a beauty contest. Collect $10" still gets laughs.

Monopoly N64 offers Standard, Short and Timed games. Each player starts with as many as three properties. Timed Games last 15, 30, 45 or 60 minutes. Hasbro gives you the opportunity to customize nine different rules, including double money for landing on GO and no collecting money from Jail.

The board lies nestled among snowcapped mountains and red- and blue-roofed houses. Sharp-eyed players will note that the streetlights are powered by a nuclear power plant. Nothing in the scenery affects game play. A bright palette captures the game's fanciful mood, but the board text should have been made be clearer.

The main visual attractions are the wonderfully whimsical animations. Mind's Eye has managed to endow each token with a strong personality, so you have the cheerful Thimble, the crafty Car, the decidedly unjocular Jockey and the slightly goofy Iron. You can turn off the token movement animations, but you'll probably prefer to watch the Ship waddle around the board.

The sound design is eclectic, to say the least, with wheezes, honks, boings, squeaks, clunks, trumpet flourishes and other corny effects clashing with John Tesh-esque synth music. Hasbro probably figures the kids will turn down the tepid tunes, while their parents will turn off the raucous FX.

For CPU-controlled tokens, the solid AI offers four personality types: cautious, normal, intelligent and bold. You can set the CPU to control all the tokens, then sit back and watch. There is one save slot for a game in progress.

However, mom and dad might first want to play a few matches with junior to explain the confusing controls. While tossing the dice and moving are simple, decoding the menus for trading, buying houses and mortgaging requires much back-and-forthing to the Controller info screens. The Control Stick makes a crude tool for specifying precise dollar amounts and the screen text never explains the difference between Standard and Short games. None of these problems are insuperable, but they make learning the game needlessly difficult.

Mario Party, Rugrats: Scavenger Hunt and the Game Boy Color Beauty and the Beast: A Board Game Adventure have been big hits with fans eager for multiplayer alternating fun. Monopoly looks to continue that trend.

www.nintendo.com – Game Boy Color:
Hasbro Interactive transforms America's favorite board game into America's favorite video game with a portable version of its capitalistic classic.

Monopoly for Game Boy Color is a faithful representation of its real-world inspiration, from 2nd place beauty contest finishes to bank errors in your favor. One player can take on a computer opponent, or up to four humans can compete by sharing turns on a single Game Boy Color.

The computer automatically assumes responsibility for all of the accounting in the game, which eliminates the threat of any siblings who suffer from sticky finger syndrome. A logical menu system makes even the most complex financial transactions a breeze, including mortgaging property and constructing houses and hotels.

If you don't have time for a full game, you can jump immediately into the thick of things with eight pre-set scenarios. Monopoly is a great to way to pass the time when you're on the road, especially if you take advantage of the multiplayer mode.

Monopoly is compatible with Game Boy Pocket and the classic Game Boy as well as Game Boy Color.
