Roberta Williams' Phantasmagoria

Despite all of the gripes I have about this game, one thing is clear: it did keep me on the edge of my chair throughout. Yes, the graphics could have been better; yes, the acting could have been better; yes, some of the interface was poorly organized, but the game does shine through all this. Of course, being a "movie" will limit its gameplay extensively. Once you finish it, you're done. I did finish it (with a little help from the "Offical Insider's Guide to Phantasmagoria", a 188-page book that goes behind the scenes, contains an interview of Roberta Williams, and offers an extensive walkthough of the entire game.). Parents! Read the booklet over prior to letting your kids play.

Okay, here's where you lose any shred of respect you may have for me. Despite everything I've said, I enjoyed playing Phantasmagoria. It was fun in a very base, trashy way. It had an interface that was intuitive and dependable. It's got some of those sturdy video virtues that I always enjoy. I guess I'm so critical of it because I think Sierra and Roberta Williams squandered an opportunity to make a really fine, groundbreaking, and new type of game and instead went for the low road. It's a pity.
