In most cases, players who love football will pick up Madden NFL 2002 regardless of this review’s results, but for those who are trying to decide on a franchise to follow, rest assured that EA Sports has worked its magic yet again to offer solid gameplay and countless modes on your PS2. With gameplay oozing off of this disk like gravy out of Refrigerator Perry’s hot beef sandwich, fans of the gridiron will lose themselves in hours of rapture and may very well forget to eat or sleep. Obviously, lots of modes would be meaningless without solid gameplay to back them up, and this year’s Madden goes a long way towards repairing the twitchy AI, stilted commentary and zombie players that marred the initial PS2 outing for this venerable series. The results of this retooling are impressive indeed, making Madden NFL 2002 a must-have item for any self-respecting football fan.

If you're even the slightest football fan, you have no choice but to own this game. Even if you aren't, try it. You may become a fan. Maybe next your we'll look back at Madden 2002 and it will seem archaic compared to the new version. Right now we can't see it - but we're putting our money on Tiburon to prove us wrong again.

With graphics as smooth and detailed as you’ll see on the aging system, plus two new play modes to add to the already deep lineup of game types, Madden 2002 is the PlayStation football game to own. Included is the old 16-bit version of the classic game the old plays will look amazingly familiar to long-time Madden gamers. There’s also a new Coaches Corner, where Madden explains the different offensive formations and uses the Telestrator to show how a handful of plays unfold.

Madden football is on a roll, and even in the face of future competition it continues to set the standard for PS2 football fare. It looks like another great season for Madden in 2002.

PlayStation 2Game Informer Magazine
Before there was a Madden NFL 2002, there was a game dubbed Madden 2001. This was a well-liked game that received much praise. The acclaim that it got is nothing compared to the accolades that 2002 deserves. When I tell you that I've never had such a fun and intense football experience – ever – you may think that's a natural progression for this next-gen sequel. However, that would be underestimating the strides this title has made, and just how high the bar has been raised.

The funny thing is, when my roommate says he wants to watch some football, that means he wants to watch ME play Madden 2002 because it's so real. If you couldn't already tell, this is probably your leading vote getter for 'Football Game of the Year.'

Every year that EA Sports releases a new version of Madden Football, I always buy it. And why is that, you ask? Simply put, nobody makes a better football game than EA Sports. I've tried all the fake wannabe football games out there, and not one can even begin to compare to Madden 2002. If you're looking for a football game that will have hours and hours of replay value, then you need not look any further because Madden has got it all for you. On that note I'll give Madden 2002 a score of 96/100. See ya on the gridiron!

Passing, running, and defense are all enhanced in this offering, and as a result the thrill of the Hail Mary and the crunch of a sack are greatly heightened. Couple this with the Madden Cards and the numerous game modes, and you’ve got yet another not-to-be-missed gridiron release. In the realm of digital football, EA has yet to relinquish its throne. Long live the king.

Pretend you're watching Any Given Sunday, and I'm coach Tony D'Amato while you're third-string QB Wille Beamen – before he's steamin'. You’re flustered, missing throws. I tell you to forget the playbook and just play like you've always known how to play. You start winning games. This little scenario applies perfectly to the Xbox version of Madden. Forget about hating the controller and you'll light 'em up.

Well, after managing to insult probably a good 50% of our readership, this review is coming to an end. I can't say enough good things about this game. Its just football the way it was meant to be played on a video game console. There's nothing truly earth shattering that separate Madden 2001 and Madden 2002, other than updated rosters Two Minute Drill, the Training Mode and a few minor tweaks. But there is no better football game on the PlayStation 2 today.

Madden NFL 2002 is easily the most impressive NFL based video game ever. It's definitely an improvement in previous games in the Madden series including the previous PS2 stunner. The graphics and animation are crispy clean, so much so that several of my friends thought I was watching a real game until closer inspection, the gameplay is superb and the game just feels right. The most important thing however, is that Madden NFL 2002 is tremendous fun to play and has that "one more go" addiciveness. This is one game that, when you get used to the multitude of options and controls, you will not want to put down. If you already own last year's version you should still consider upgrading to the 2002 game, it's that good. If your undecided as to whether you can cope with playing an NFL game I can only strongly suggest the you rent this game to see how awesome it is, and then go buy it.

So while Madden 2002 isn't reinventing football on the PlayStation, it is really the best you're going to get on the system. Arguably, it can even provide a more enjoyable experience than its big brother on the PlayStation 2. In any event, Madden 2002 for the PlayStation is a wonderful re-creation of a sport that controls well and has almost just as many bells and whistles as its PlayStation 2 counterpart. But most importantly, the game is just superfun to play.

PlayStation 2IGN
When you take these two factors together -- great single player and great multiplayer game -- what you get is a football fan's wet dream and one of the greatest sports titles that have ever graced a videogame console. And while whether or not it's the best football game ever released is debatable, we're going to go ahead and give it our vote for "Best. Madden. Ever."

PlayStation 2GameSpot
Once everything is accounted for, Madden 2002 is fundamentally the same game as last year's title. There are a handful of compelling new features and graphical upgrades, but when you compare the experience of being out on the field that both games offer, the core technical differences between them are nominal. Even still, what Madden 2002 has to offer is rock-solid, and will not disappoint fans of the series.

Nintendo 64GameSpot
So while Madden 2002 isn't dramatically different from last year's offering, EA has really tried to put in everything it could. The game's got the Madden classic mode, which is almost like a completely different game, and you can play two players in the two-minute drill. EA's also added more Madden telestrator action in with the coach's corner. In any event, Madden 2002 for the N64 is a wonderful re-creation of the sport of football that controls well, looks good, and has enough packed in to keep you busy for a while. But most importantly, the game is just superfun.

With the lone exception of the commentary, Madden 2002 represents a substantial upgrade from last year’s version and a worthy purchase for football fanatics everywhere, with beefed-up graphics and improved gameplay in several key areas. This reviewer heartily gives it the thumbs up. Is it the ultimate football game? Not quite. Keep in mind that if it was, there’d be no reason for next year’s game -- and we can’t have that, can we? For now, though, Madden 2002 remains the champion of PS2 football. Of course, I’ve been hearing some rumblings over at another developer’s headquarters. Seems they’ve been crafting a nice little football game themselves -- hey, looks like this contest could be going into overtime. Better watch your back, EA! Can you say... Sega Sports?

While to the very few, Madden 2002 will feel like the 'same old same old' (those people deserve to be hit with bricks), all in all Madden NFL 2002 is a substantial improvement in the series. The controls have remained untouched, the visuals have received a major overhaul, and the gameplay has been reinvented all over again. The sheer amount of new modes, and the overall depth of this game is unrivaled. It's very interesting to see if Sega will be able to compete with their PS2 version of NFL 2K2 next year. Indeed, the fight for virtual pigskin supremacy has officially begun. Madden NFL 2002 is a highly recommended purchase.

Madden 2002 makes a very smooth transition to the Xbox and retains all the glory of the original PS2 version. Not to take anything away from the solid NFL Fever, but this version of Madden successfully unifies the title.

EA Sports is off to a good start this year on the PlayStation 2. NCAA 2002 and Madden 2002 have collectively raised the football bar. Only time will tell if the rest of its lineup will be as polished. One thing is for certain, however. If you have a PlayStation 2 and you love NFL football - Madden 2002 is simply a must buy.

There may never be another PlayStation football game that's better than this... so enjoy it now. This is one of the few sports games ever made for the PlayStation that will keep you coming back time after time. If you don't have a PS2, then this is the best way to go.

Madden 2002 has new features including Season, Franchise, Tournament, Create-A-Team, and many others. It has updated rosters and better stat records of players. This is the first Madden to use the Madden Challenge to receive tokens to buy Madden cards that unlock cheats, historic players, and boost player's ratings for different periods of time. There sadly isn't online support for this game on Xbox. PS2 owners however have the pleasure of having this feature. Hopefully in the future EA will have online support for all consoles. Still, overall, Madden 2002 is a great game; highly recommended.

I keep going back to the seemingly endless well of fun that is Madden, and it's still good to me – on the PS2. GameCube's incarnation shares the helmet scuffs and more detailed uniforms that the Xbox version does, but believe it or not, I had a problem with GC's controller. Using the C-stick for D-linemen's special moves wasn't fun. I also noticed a little extra blur in some of the between play shots, and that the rosters were older than they should've been. Still fun, still Madden, but not a perfect port.

Control and sound issues aside, this is the best version of Madden 2002 available. One thing the Madden series has taught is that you don't always have to be a groundbreaking game to give consumers what they want. What they want, whether they're a hardcore gamer or not, is a game that's so much fun to play that they never want to stop. EA has done a great job of achieving that.

Madden 2002 is simply console football as good as it has ever been. The main draw is the customization of gameplay and the players themselves. As I said before, Madden2002 is the first football title that is basically what you make it. The type of football game you play is completely up to you. I see only a few areas from improvement, mainly commentary and online play. The football season is over, but thats no reason to pass up on the greatest football title of all time, better than ever on the XBox.

Overall, Midnight Club 2 should be an essential part of your Xbox racing lineup. It's easily the best street racer on the market today, and while it may not feature some of the same style gameplay that you're used to, this is a game that's sure to please Xbox racing game fans. There are so many racing games out there, and you won't go far wrong if you pick Midnight Club 2 over the rest.

While EA Sports have only made a few improvements over Madden NFL 2001, fans of the series should be extremely pleased with the new customisable team and create-a-player modes, as well as the improved graphical touches. About the only major complaint anyone can make towards Madden NFL 2002 is that it is perhaps too similar to its predecessor, so those players who already own the 2001 edition may feel short changed if they buy this game. If you are in that boat, rent it first - most will still agree that it warrants the purchase, as it is the definitive Madden title.

Madden NFL 2002 isn't just another addition to the long-standing Madden series. It's a game that's so feature-rich, so extremely customizable, and so realistic that I'd recommend this one even if you're not a football buff.

Madden 2002 for the GameCube is, not surprisingly, a port of the PlayStation 2 version with slight visual enhancements. It's the only football title available for the GameCube right now, so this is an obvious choice for sports fanatics who own a 'Cube. But even if it wasn't the only football game on the console, I doubt that anyone would want to choose a different game. Madden has proven itself as the top football series year after year. By the time NFL 2k2 arrives, it might be too late for Sega to gain any sales. You could wait until next year, or play one of the greatest football games of all time right now. Take your pick.

Electronic Arts' Madden NFL 2002 is the first and only football game available for GameCube launch, and will undoubtedly go on to be one of the best NFL simulations on the console until the franchise's next release. And while the GameCube version isn't without its problems, Madden NFL 2002 has almost everything football fanatics could want.

As I said originally though, the problems in this game are very easy to overlook. They are all relatively minor problems, and while they may annoy at times, you will be having such a blast playing this game that you may not even notice. Add the fact that most game modes are playable for up to four players, and you have hours of fun ahead of you. All in all, Madden 2002 is a stellar football game to keep Gamecube owners occupied for a very long time.

Madden 2002 isn't going to wow you with its speed --even if you're running the ball with Edgerrin James-- because you're supposed to be awed by its authentic blocking and defensive AI. It's NFL substance over style that we've come to expect from Madden games and that's what Madden NFL 2002 gives us.

GameCubeGameSpot
In the end, Madden 2002 is a great game of simulation-style football for the GameCube. If you're trying to decide whether to pick up Madden with your GameCube at launch, it really depends on what type of football game you want. If you enjoy simulation-style football games that play well, have incredible depth, and look great, Madden 2002 is your game. If you're a PS2 owner wondering if you should get the GameCube version of Madden 2002 because it might look better, the answer is no. The differences between the PS2 and GameCube versions are nominal at best and really don't warrant another purchase.

My only beef is that the hits aren't quite as earth shaking as those in Sega's NFL 2K series. Still, Madden 2002 is awesome, and no die-hard football fan will want to pass it up.

PlayStation 2Gaming Age
Pound for pound Madden 2002 and NFL 2K2 represent the best we've seen from a variety of football titles over the years. Madden 2002 does many things well and displays the polish of a title that has been around (in its incrementally modified form) for several years. But it's Madden's inherently deep replay value that makes the game a real value for the dollar. Couple that with excellent pass execution, solid football strategies and integration with rosters from the graduates of NCAA 2002 and you have very deep, solid, although somewhat aged game of professional football. So there you have it! Let the e-mails fly.

Load times are faster, saving doesn't take quite as long, and simming an entire season takes a minute thanks to the power of the Xbox. You won't go wrong with any version, but if you've already planned on an Xbox purchase, any quest for the best arcade football simulation should halt right here. Madden 2002 mimics the NFL better than its competition and the Xbox version tops them all.

Madden has fast gameplay, tough opponents, excellent AI, and a host full of other great features. I have very few discrepancies, and if you can overlook the poor sound quality and cramped controller of the N64, then pick this one up today.

When Dolphins QB Dan Marino left the game, they made a shrine of his locker; sealing it off as an example of greatness. On the other hand, Dan-o's last few seasons saw time catch up with the star. Likewise, you can't deny this 2002 incarnation reminds us the Madden series is one of the best, but it's also clear the franchise itself has simply passed the original PlayStation by.

This is a very good PlayStation title. It carries the uncertainty of NFL play (the old adage that any team can beat another on “any given Sunday” comes to mind), with the dynamics of the talent on the field. The game is solid graphically and in the audio department, and the game play features add to the programs entertainment value.

If you liked Madden 2001, do yourself a favor and buy Madden 2002... or just wait and buy Madden 2003 which can't be that far down the road. There are a few minor glitches in 2002, but nothing to shun it for. I love the game, and I think you will to, if you like football anyways.

Arcade gamers that don't own a console will want to run to their nearest store and purchase Madden 2002 PC. This game will perfectly fit their needs. Those looking for a realistic game of football on the PC will be disappointed with Madden except potentially when they are playing against other humans in online games that allow slider settings to be changed. This is also the only reason that anyone that owns a PS2 will want to own the PC version of the title. Yes, the graphics are nice to look at, but the current crop of EA Sports football games provides far superior game play value. I would encourage EA Sports to fix at least the PC version's secondary AI so that those of us who enjoy realistic football can play it on the PC. Otherwise, PC fans may want to wait until this year's Madden 2002 PS2 is ported to Madden 2003 PC.

In truth, there isn't a whole lot more you can do with this series on the PSX. Even though it dons the irritating pretext of "newness" and even though there are now definitely better football games to be had, Madden 2002 is a comprehensive ending to a good, if not repetitive, chapter in video game history. May some things never change.

It's totally understandable that a company would want to take an existing resource and try to squeeze as much juice out of it as possible. We see it all the time, with "Gold" version re-releases and classic compilations. We also see it when a game is ported from one system to another.

WindowsAdrenaline Vault, The (AVault)
EA Sports’ latest PC football game offers a decent console experience, but fails to truly capitalize on its status as a computer release. Indeed, Madden 2002 has the eye-popping graphics of the PS2 version of Madden 2001, but it uses a poor interface, has modest AI, and doesn’t provide enough new features to differentiate it from last year’s offering. The program’s Internet multiplayer feature offers fair gameplay, but the experience isn’t as much fun as challenging a friend sitting next to you. Overall, this is not a bad game, but it serves to show that some PC sports titles are still a step behind their console brethren.

WindowsComputer Gaming World (CGW)
I should point out that, in spite of Madden 2002’s shortcomings, I’m still playing the game nearly every day. And when friends come over, it’s one of the first games that we crank up. This says two things: 1) Madden 2002 is a really fun football game, and 2) for PC gamers, it’s the only show in town.

Though the opponent AI was clever enough to call an audible when I put my punt block unit in the game on first down, it seemed they didn’t quite know how to conquer a dime defense with a two man blitz. Long story short – this is a fun game if you want to obliterate the computer with the same plays time after time.

When you get down to the basics, Madden NFL 2002 comes with a superb graphics and physics model, good features, poor sound, and unbalanced gameplay. The lack of a pass defense and the inhuman accuracy of quarterbacks, even when the AI sliders are slanted to eliminate these traits, taint a football game that could truly be the best ever. Here's hoping that EA patches these small deficiencies, and we can finally use a balanced attack to win the Super Bowl (virtually, of course).

Madden 2002 may not look all that good. But it's still a fun game, and will still put up a challenge for you. PS2 owners should definitely pass this up, but if all you have is a PS1, rent it first, without a doubt. Or you can wait for 2003 to come out, which will be released in August, and give that a rent. The 2-Minute Drill is a lot of fun, and the game itself is enjoyable enough to play a whole season, but it will really eat away at your memory card (8 blocks for the season). I was just very disappointed at how bad the game looks and how long the load times are.
