This is a great year to be a football video game fan. We are treated to two fine football games, but I would have to give the edge to Madden this year. Madden 2005 is more fun to play, and it has a more enjoyable all-around experience. All of the defensive changes made for this year make for a very interesting game. Madden 2005 is definitely the best game in the Madden franchise, and quite possibly the best football game to date.

Each season Madden NFL holds courts as the elite of the video game football league. This year even though the competition is fewer (no NFL GameDay or NFL Fever), it?s gotten tougher (ESPN NFL 2K5); and Madden NFL 2005 muscles up to compete in fine form.

There's a battle afoot on the gridiron, as two fearsome competitors fight it out in the trenches. No, they're not trying to get precious yards for a first down or a hail mary into the end zone, they're duking it out to get your hard earned money. ESPN NFL 2K5 stepped up to the line first, releasing their game two weeks before the originally scheduled date, and with a low price that's hard for most people to resist. On the other side of the line of scrimmage is Madden NFL 2005, the latest entry in the most popular sports franchise in the history of video games. So who deserves to pocket your cash? At the end of four grueling quarters, Madden NFL 2005 walks off the field as the winner, thanks to some of the best gameplay ever seen in a football game.

In conclusion, if you are a Madden-ite, no matter what I say in this review, you’ve already bought the game. For those of us that are looking for the one best football game each year, Madden isn’t perfect, but it’s pretty close, and it’s definitely the top football game for 2005.

For those raised in caves, under rocks and Idaho militia compounds, here's a little Madden background: It's one of the best football sports sims ever made, now get back in your hole! The amount of detail put into this game, now in its 15th year, has been astounding for the past few years and is now creeping up on ludicrous. Last year Hot Routes was the main innovation; this time it's all about the D. The new Hit Stick function lets you go for bone-shattering tackles. For control freaks, you're two button clicks away from pinching down the defensive line, reassigning a safety to double down on your opponent's primary receiver or bringing all your DBs into bump-and-run coverage. The only things EA left out are a THG steroid upgrade and a button combo that makes your star running back throw away untold millions so he can smoke some reefer and eat Cheetos!

Still, when a popular, high-profile series makes a new release every year, pop-culture has most gamers pondering even more about the decision to shell out the fifty bucks to pay for possibly a near-exact title. Rest assured, the amount of features and improvements in Madden NFL 2005 will surprise even the biggest football enthusiast or typical hardcore Madden player. Surprising in itself? With the series’ track record every year – not at all.

Oh, EA Sports . . . how do you do it? Each year you make us pro football fans excited about the next Madden NFL game and each year we gladly surrender to its hype because we know we won’t be disappointed. This year Madden NFL 2005 is going up against its biggest competitor, Sega’s ESPN NFL 2005 for a battle to win over fans of the video gridiron. As a sport gamer obsessed with both games, it’s time to see which of the two really stands out as the very best.

In one year, EA Sports has done more to right the wrongs of Maddens gameplay past than in any time in the illustrious series' history. Play Madden NFL 2005 once, and you might notice the big hits and how aware all of the defenders are on the gridiron. Play it five times and you'll realize how defensive hot routes completely even out the field and that for the first time, maybe in any football game, it's not just fun, it's actually meaningful to D-up. Play the game 20 times and you really start to appreciate the brilliance behind the All-Madden engine.

Facing perhaps the trickiest competition in years thanks to the brilliant ESPN NFL 2K5, John Madden Football has returned with Madden NFL 2005. While incredible praise and acclaim for Sega’s game might have put a slight damper on Madden’s hype machine, EA’s flagship franchise is here, and is better than ever, as you’d expect. But is that enough this year, when Sega has attacked not only with the most realistic game in the series yet, but also a more wallet-friendly price tag? In all honesty, yes – if you’re a Madden fan.

It is hard to believe that the Madden Franchise is already fifteen years old, and that every year EA Sports releases an update version upon the gaming world. Each year Tiburon manages to impress me with all of the new gameplay updates, graphics, and new features in their newest game. This year it is no different, Madden 2005 has tons of new features that will keep you up late at night, trying to get that “last touchdown” before sleep finally consumes you. Needless to say, you should pick up this latest iteration of Madden 2005 as soon as you can, because your PlayStation 2 will thank you for it.

If you must have only one NFL football game, I say spend the $50 on Madden NFL 2005. I think you will find yourself playing it for far longer than you would the $20 ESPN NFL 2K5. The best thing you can do this year is to get both though.

So who comes out on top; Madden or ESPN? It honestly does lie within each player’s preferences and what exactly they are looking for in a football game. Each has their own strengths and weaknesses. One thing can be said for certain, Madden will always look, feel and play like the Madden franchise we have come to expect and accept. Madden NFL 2005 is no different than any of its predecessors in style and feel, but there are a bunch of new features, including Xbox Live, that do quite well to push the franchise forward. Personally, I really enjoy the authenticity and realism involved with Madden’s superior AI and gameplay feel. The hardcore Madden fans will love the subtle tweaks, fixes and upgrades throughout the entire game, and newcomers are in for a treat as Madden NFL 2005 is easily the best version of the game since its inception years and years ago. Madden is truly on a level all by itself, and it’s been quite some time since I’ve said that.

Don’t get me wrong, because Madden 2005 is easily the deepest version of the successful franchise yet. A radically expansive franchise mode and an incredibly reactive defensive control scheme combine to make one of the best updates to a football game to date. Like usual, Madden usually sets a standard for other titles to follow, and the attention to the defense side of the game should be the new benchmark for other games to follow. Whether you’re a hardcore fan or a newcomer to the sport, you should make sure that you get your hands on Madden 2005.

Year after year, companies constantly bring out sequels, some outdoing their predecessors while others are only on par, and in a few cases, the sequels are considered worse. In its fifteenth year, Madden is at it again, returning with new improvements and features. As Madden would say, "He was waiting for something to develop, and bam he got developed." The Collector's Edition of Madden 2005 can't demonstrate this quote any better.

Madden. One word sums up the most dominating franchise in video game history. Forget Mario, forget Sonic and to hell with Crash. The sheer scale of Madden has obliterated every other series to become the largest phenomenon the gaming world has ever seen. Don’t believe me? Take these three facts into consideration: 1.) The recent announcement of more than 1.35 million (that’s right, million) copies of Madden NFL 2005 were sold in the first week alone.

Madden NFL 2005 marks yet another excellent entry into the famous series, but doesn?t deviate much from the path laid out by Madden NFL 2004. It actually offers less new material than ESPN NFL 2K5, which struck a chord with its VIP system and Weekly Prep. However, Madden?s gameplay is more consistent and more solid than ESPN?s, especially in terms of playbook depth and passing, and ultimately that?s what distinguishes the champ from the challenger.

Despite the fact that some areas feel reused from 2004, and for some inexplicable reason Xbox Live support was left out of the PAL version, there is no doubt that Madden 2005 deserves its reputation as one of the premier sport titles available. If you love NFL gaming, don't wait, grab Madden 2005 now.

So is it worth getting Madden NFL 2005? Yes, the new defensive adjustments, along with the addition of online play, make this year’s version a must have for any football fan. So if it’s a must have, why did you score it lower than in year’s past? The overall presentation was really upsetting to me. Namely, the poor commentary. I think the Storyline Central idea is something to build on for the future, but this year, I think it’s more of a joke than anything.

The franchise mode now includes the element of player morale, but an unfortunate side effect is that they tend to whine a lot. Between weeks you can read articles from newspapers (local and national) and even listen to a radio talk show. Madden's past domination is being challenged this year by ESPN 2K5, but this venerable series can still holds its own.

There’s a fine line between being confident and being cocky, a fact proven most recently by the fall of Roy Jones, Jr. The man who was once the greatest fighter in the world wound up kissing the canvas thanks to a solid punch by a hungrier opponent, revealing once and for all that being a champion takes more than past accomplishments: it takes poise under pressure and a watchful eye on the competition.

After you get used to the new defensive era of Madden, the game plays very well. It still retains that fun factor you've always known and loved. Although its franchise mode dives deeper than ESPN, the feature set doesn't suck you in and make you want to return as much as ESPN's cohesive package. If you are a multi-season junkie who wants to wring out every little drop from the coaching sponge, then Madden will be worth the extra $30. It's still a fine game of football.

With Madden and ESPN sitting next to one another on the shelf, the $30 discrepancy might seem like a hurdle. But the defensive additions to this game propel it far ahead of the solid play and sleek presentation of the competition. Madden NFL 2005 is simply the best NFL game on the market. This game is so good it's no wonder the opposition dropped development of their games. The real disappointment is lack of online gameplay. Still, this is as perfect as NFL has ever been as a video game.

If you're after a quick, arcade-style gaming fix, Madden 2005 probably isn't it. This may just be the most complex, sprawling sports release ever, a significant re-tool from the recent years with a welcome defensive focus. Even Madden veterans will take time to get up to speed, and there's a definite intimidation factor for new players. Ultimately, though, the rewards are there in spades. It's tough, it's smart, it's demanding: and as a truly indepth sports title, a mind-and-body combo that'll keep you going to the Superbowl and beyond, Madden's in a class of its own.

Madden NFL 2005 marks the 15th season of this superlative football game series. The biggest change is the addition of the Hit Stick. This feature takes a little getting used to, but it's worthwhile: You use the right thumb stick to deliver big hits on defense that can cause fumbles. Defensive AI has been improved, letting you change defensive assignments on the fly; this innovation goes a long way toward preventing offensive plays caused by a mismatch between defensive and offensive players. As for offense, formation shifts and custom hot routes make good additions to already excellent controls. And to help make decisions in Franchise mode, Storyline Central gives you help from radio host Tony Bruno and local and national newspapers—and that news can directly affect your team.

That’s right, just about every other company ran away from the field this year, leaving an underdog to challenge the undisputed champion.

Madden NFL 2005 is still Madden. That is to say, it's another superb game of football that continues Madden's long legacy as one of the best in the business. As the best-selling football franchise on the market for an umpteen number of years, Madden NFL is a name that is known by the masses as representative of some of the best football you can get on a video game console. Last year's Madden NFL 2004, in particular, is revered as one of the best installments EA has ever brought out--which ultimately makes it a tough act to follow. For this year's edition, Madden NFL 2005, defense is the name of the game.

Most of the problems pointed out with this year's game are just nit-picking. It's a fine effort, and the additions to the game generally improved the overall experience - but it just doesn't feel like enough. Hardcore Madden fans, the ones that play the game daily, year round, will likely be happy with the changes and not miss anything new, because the game never gets old for them. Other people, the ones that buy the game every year but get burnt out after a few months will probably find that this year's game gets old a lot sooner than last year's. For your reference, there's a special collector's edition of Madden 2005 this year, and it's got a couple of classic Madden games from the Genesis and PSone era, but it sold out the first day and I was unable to get my hands on it to review.

The NFL draft has also been given a bit of a boost. You can keep tabs on 15 players that you are interested in pursuing and the draft plays out a lot more like the regular NFL draft. Each team is put on the clock and the wheeling and dealing begins. You even get crowd reactions from choices made by the teams. There is also opponent trading of draft picks to move up or down in the draft, something that was noticeably absent from previous versions. It’s all very well put together and gives you the atmosphere of actually being at the draft.

All over America, Bratwursts are defrosting, belt buckles are loosening, and girlfriends are getting dumped. Yes, it’s that manliest time of the year, the beginning of the football season and the release of the latest installment of the top-selling Madden Football franchise from EA Sports. Spanning four platforms, Madden 2005 should once again be the best-selling game of the year because of its brand name, fantastic gameplay, and its dedicated legion of fans. Madden gets better every year, but some years the jump isn’t quite as high as previous years, making the only real attraction the updated rosters and a few graphical enhancements. Aside from a few improvements, this year happens to be one of those years.

I think Madden is a great game, but it doesn’t really outshine Sega’s ESPN NFL 2k5. Long time Madden fans should be pretty satisfied with this game, but it feels more evolutionary then revolutionary. The defensive improvements are a step in the right direction, but there needs to be more work on making the game more balanced. I also think that Madden 2005 has much farther to go in graphics, as there was very little change from 2004 to 2005. All in all, this game is good, but there is just not enough there to call it great.

Madden NFL 2005 is an extremely detailed sportsgame with impressive depth that will not disappoint the football fan, despite the lack of online options and some smaller issues. The realism and the fun that comes from the endless number of options, the AI and All-Madden mode is combined with excellent animations and an attractive Franchise mode. In short: this is triple A gameplay and a real must-have for gamers who know American football or for those ready to invest a lot of time in it.

The lasting impact of Madden is that it's fun to play. The franchise mode gives players a reason to stick around for a bit without online play. Those with online for PS2 and Xbox will be happy and addicted to the disease that is competition. Madden is one game that anyone can pick up and enjoy without any real skill. That is just about the best thing about Madden's fanbase. It is so diverse that you never know who you will be playing online. I recommend that if you want the online experience and familiar control scheme, spend the extra on Madden. With deep gameplay elements however, ESPN is difficult to pass up for its $20 tag. Let's hope Madden doesn't go downhill having any competition next year in the NFL game market.

If you’re ready for some football on the go, then Madden 2005 is your game, although you won’t get the same level of football greatness that you’ll find on the console version, for obvious reasons due to a less-powerful gaming platform. Those old enough to have played the Genesis renditions of Madden will wax nostalgic at the similar look and gameplay experience. In the age of the fantasy sports league craze, football fanatics with time to play their GBA during their daily on-the-go activities will want to get Maddened, especially with the addictive Season Mode.

You can feel it, can’t you? The smell of freshly mowed turf, the clashing of cymbals from a marching band and the smell of hamburgers cooking on a portable grill in a parking lot filled with fans just waiting to catch a glimpse of their gridiron heroes. Ah, football season, it feels like hope as we turn an eye towards our favorite team and cheer them on. It’s hard to capture this genuine feel but somehow EA’s Madden NFL franchise manages to do it by giving us a game that is just too much fun to want to put down. So grab your favorite beverage and let’s talk Madden NFL 2005 on the Game Boy Advance.

Overall, Madden NFL 2005 pales in comparison to its console cousins, but it does a good job of providing NFL fans with football action on the go. If you want to play some football on the road, you won’t be disappointed if you pick up the game.

Madden 2005 may not be a total revolution over the past years efforts, but the additions added to the game are not just window dressing. The A.I. is better and more competitive, which leads to accurate box scores. The game play is tighter and more responsive. The graphics are good, but really need an overhaul, and the audio is standard fare, with some nice bright spots from Tony Bruno and accurate crowd atmosphere. The attitude of ?if it isn?t broken don?t fix it? should stay in the game play department, but when it comes to presentation and visuals, there is some fixing need to be done if Madden plans to keep their spot on the top of the football dynasty. With all the mixed reviews with some saying ESPN is the best, and some saying Madden is the best, this reviewers money is on Madden this year as to me it is worth the extra 30 dollars for what you do on an off the field. Make your judgments if you must.

Madden 2005 is an excellent example of how a game can improve within a year’s time. EA Tiburon has done an excellent job on this title, just as they did with the console version. The additional game modes, new game engine, and great new interface make this game so much better than last year’s. It still isn’t up to par with the console version, but saying that is like comparing Sprite to Jolt Cola. You just can’t compare goodness with godliness. When all is said and done, it should be said that if you just can’t get enough football, or Madden football for that matter, you should definitely pick this title up for your portable fix. Otherwise, you may want to make a quick judgment call and wait this one out if you aren’t a big fan of the sport. After all, there are plenty of more titles to get your attention. Football fans will definitely get a kick out of this title, though, and it is certainly worth their dime.

Madden NFL 2005 marks yet another excellent entry into the famous series, but doesn’t deviate much from the path laid out by Madden NFL 2004. It actually offers less new material than ESPN NFL 2K5, which struck a chord with its VIP system and Weekly Prep. However, Madden’s gameplay is more consistent and more solid than ESPN’s, especially in terms of playbook depth and passing, and ultimately that’s what distinguishes the champ from the challenger.

Longtime GBA Madden fans will notice a few cosmetic improvements when they first fire up Madden NFL 2005. The playbook interface now looks more like the interface used in the recent console versions, instead of the one used in the decades-old Sega Genesis Madden games. The variety of different player animations hasn't changed since last year's game--there are still dozens of them--but the camera viewpoint has been pulled back and player bodies have been slimmed down, which makes the action more realistic and easier to follow.

In the console world, Sega’s ESPN sports line is challenging EA Sports' dominance, On the PC, we’re left without any option plays. Don't get us wrong, There’s plenty of good stuff in the latest Madden, but it’s not as juicy as his Thanksgiving turducken. This 15-year veteran scores extra points with its new franchise mode goodies, and although the new gameplay features are welcome, especially the presnap defensive adjustments, there are some odd quirks that detract from the overall experience. Madden 2005 doesn’t make any huge leaps forward in the gameplay experience, but after so many years, firing up the latest Madden game is like putting on your favorite team jersey to watch the Sunday game—it might not smell springtime fresh, but it sure feels comfortable.

They're small gripes, but valid ones. But you should see past them, because ultimately, Madden is a sensational game in the literal sense, delivering unparalleled replayability for those with open minds. Americans do sport well, and this is the multi-million dollar spawn of that absolute truism. Don't care about American football? Your loss. Madden 2005 is worth every cent of admission.

At the end of any given Sunday, Madden NFL 2005 is a fantastic game with only a few issues. The graphics and sound, whilst acceptable, aren't anything to write home about, there is still some minor A.I. issues and Xbox Live was excluded from the PAL release. However, if online play is not a must, these things shouldn't stop NFL fans from choosing Madden as their preferred title for the 2004/2005 season.

The pinball running, even if you can circumvent it much of the time with the Y button, as well as the aging game engine knock this game 10% for me right away. The quick-to-judge reader obviously won’t read this article in its entirety and realize that I believe “Madden” is every bit as good as “ESPN”. I didn’t review both, and both are extremely good games with flaws in different areas. “ESPN” and “Madden” are both 4/5 games for me for different reasons. However, if I had to drop my money on one game this year (and only one game), then that game would be “Madden”…

Every year EA's Tiburon studio manages to pull a worthy update to its Madden series out of its collective hats, throwing together a wide variety of new features that justifies a new version for the season. The series, while just as frequent, hasn't been nearly as flourishing on the Game Boy Advance. But the deja vu is over. Madden NFL 2005 is an entirely new product on the Game Boy Advance, and while it still can't come anywhere close to what the console team's doing on the Xbox, PlayStation 2, and GameCube, the GBA rendition is a good match for handheld gaming that at least offers the core of what makes the Madden series so darn good.

Bite-size Madden manages to do the job as EA brings us its latest football title reworked for the Nintendo DS. The game is kept simple and fun with maybe a few issues worth mentioning. Outside of those small things, it's definitely worth having if you own a DS.

EA is smart to bring its Madden NFL franchise on to the DS. The name alone should make any football fan scream with glee, but beyond the big name, this pigskin sports the right moves for a good time on the DS.

It’s unfair to compare this title with its big-console namesake, but it’s impossible to go back to this game’s arcade-type of football once you’ve had a taste of the real thing. Some of you will enjoy the old-fashioned sweep plays and the over-zealous dives that stretch across the screen, but I don’t know if anyone wants to see the sloppy route running and catching of the passing game that this title contains. To be fair, developer Exient tries to drag this old-school action into the present day with menu music; audio commentary with Madden and Michaels; and a season mode complete with free agents, trades, and player salaries. Still, this game works best as a memory of things past.

Overall, the game looks and sounds as good as any handheld sports title can get. It would have been great if the DS offered some sort of connectivity options with the GameCube, but I imagine EA and Nintendo will cook up something for the next Nintendo platform. In the end, most football junkies will likely stick to their consoles for gridiron action, but DS owners craving a portable football action will want to wrap their mits around this game.

There's one constant I've noticed in my professional half-decade tenure exclusively covering the handheld market: sports games do not sell on portable systems. Every year a publisher comes out with a great sports game, only to have it sit on shelves to be passed up by gamers in favor of the umpteen Yu-Gi-Oh and Pokemon titles that thrive on the platform. Hockey, baseball, tennis...these are all one-shot deals on the portable system, rarely followed up with a next year's version to capitalize on the success the title may have had in retail. That is, except football.

For new DS players, the starting lineup seemed to be just the touch of the iceberg, but with Mario, and two EA games, it had good support if nothing else. Madden 2005 for the DS is the only sports game available on the system, which means that all early evidence reads: The DS is going to be great for platformers and shooters (Metriod does look great).

Happy Sunday to everyone! This is Mike Mullis at the NLG Sports studio in Baltimore. It's week 12 in the NFL. For us here in Raven's country, we're awaiting the 4:15 showdown with the two-time Super Bowl Champion New England Patriots. I won't lie, I love my Ravens, but this is by far the tallest order of the year. And while I'm also a big believer in Kyle Boller, it's just not going to be the same game without Jamal Lewis. In the meantime, I'm flipping back and forth between watching the Pittsburgh Steelers just completely tear the heart out of the Washington Redskins, and watching the N.Y. Giants trying to hold their own against the Philadelphia Eagles.

Well, this year’s edition of EA Sports’ ever-popular Madden NFL franchise is finally upon us, and it is being showered with the usual accolades: “Best Madden ever!” “One of the great football video games of all time!” “Madden continues to improve with every edition, and this year is no exception!” “The very best and most realistic football you’ll ever play without leaving your chair!” If you’re in the crowd that thinks that EA Sports can do no wrong, and Madden is the greatest thing to ever happen to sports gaming, and you generally agree with any of the fictitious quotes above, I strongly advise you to leave this review. I’m not with the Madden-rules-all crowd. Not a year goes by when I don’t think the series is overrated and needs more than updated rosters. With that statement, the Madden-rules-all crowd has been warned: This gamer is mad as all hell and not going to take it anymore.

There's nothing worse than running into an ex, especially when you only see the back of their head. This happened to me recently at a restaurant; before she turned around, I figured it was possibly someone to hit on. Then when she turned to take my order, she became all too familiar. She still looked okay, but my excitement quickly turned to apathy, which then turned into an uncontrollable urge to run screaming in the opposite direction.

Much like the other offering from EA Sports on the DS, "Tiger Woods PGA Tour," this game just screams, "wait until next year." At least "Tiger" has a solid foundation, one that makes it playable (and even enjoyable). "Madden 2005" doesn't have anything of the sort. It's forgettable, cheaply produced, and oh yeah, pointless.

While Madden NFL 2005 is playable in its current form, most will tire of the shaky visuals and slippery controls faster than Mr. Madden slaps ham on a hoagie.

Each week Al Michaels and John Madden nominate Monday Night Football’s player of the game for display on the side of their horse trailer. The console versions of Madden NFL 2005 are worthy candidates, but this Nintendo DS game is the lone title that belongs in the trailer instead of on it.
