Madden NFL 98

Madden's sound is very impressive, with Pat Summerall voicing each play and Coach Madden adding his colorful commentary. Along with all the smacks and groans on the field, the sound does a solid job of enhancing the game. But it's not like Madden NFL '98 needed enhancements anyway - it's still the most fun you can have on the Saturn without actually playing in the pros.

Although it doesn't have flashy 3D graphics, Madden 98 is still the most realistic and complete football game on the market.

Once you become comfortable with this game the rewards are enormous. Madden '98 has such depth, variety and longevity that once you load it up you never want to switch it off. The intro of a quality we have come to expect on the Playstation while the ingame graphics are acceptable and do not deter from the smooth flow of the action.

Grundlegende Regelkenntnisse und einen Schuß Interesse für die Sportart sollte man mitbringen, um NFL 98 etwas abgewinnen zu können. Geboten werden Freundschaftsspiele, ein Ligamodus, 30 originale NFL-Teams samt Stadien in 3D, 100 historische Mannschaften, authentische Spielzüge, Fullscreen-Videos für erstklassiges TV-Feeling und ein Club- und Spielereditor. Wer möchte, darf als Manager agieren. Die Aufstellungen können wöchentlich per Internet aktualisiert werden. Eine Bonus- CD enthält ein multimediales Video-Lehrbuch mit mehr als einer Stunde Spielzeit. Feinheiten wie eine für Anfänger gewöhnungsbedürftige, aber sehr variantenreiche Steuerung, der nicht einfache Zugang und der sinnvolle Bluffmode für Zwei-Spieler-Partien an einem PC (der Gegner kann nicht sehen, welcher Spielzug gewählt wird) machen NFL 98 zu einem Game für Profis. Die glänzend animierten Polygonsprites wirken pixeliger als die der 97er-Version. Der angekündigte 3Dfx- Patch wird wohl Abhilfe schaffen.

When I first started playing this game, I was a bit skeptical. After playing a few games, I was hooked. This is a great football game that no Madden fan should be without. The attention to detail is unparalleled. It is not often that I throw out a "must-buy" recommendation, but this one comes real close.

Madden '98 really doesn't stick its head out above the crowd here, but by the same token it doesn't fall behind. I will give this game an average score of 79 because of a few major gameplay flaws and lackluster graphics. It is addictive, however, and I have played for hours at a time, so the guys at EA Sports continue to do most things right. If you are looking for a football sim and need one now, Madden offers solid, addictive play, and is near the top of the heap … until next year.

Im Vergleich zum etwas trägen DSF Football Pro 98 glänzt Madden 98 mit einer besseren Präsentation sowie übersichtlicheren Menüs und einem leichteren Einstieg. Spielbarkeit und Spritzigkeit sind Trumpf. Enttäuscht haben mich hingegen die quasi unveränderte Grafik und der fehlende Karriere-Modus, bei dem ich an den alljährlichen Drafts teilnehme.

Madden NFL ´98 ist mir zu sehr Update denn eine neue Version der 97er-Edition. Schön, Madden ist immer noch auch für Nichteingeweihte gut zugänglich, ohne den Profi zu unterfordern. Dafür ist es wirklich peinlich, daß die 3Dfx-Unterstützung per Patch nachgeliefert werden muß. Und das bißchen Multimedia rechtfertigt sicherlich keinen Neukauf, wenn Sie NFL ´97 bereits besitzen. Zum Einstieg in die rauhe Footballwelt werden Sie aber kein besseres Spiel finden.

Although the basic gameplay is unchanged, a very unwelcome new feature has been added: "hot and cold streaks". That's right, your favorite team might just suck for the simple reason that the game randomly determined them to be "cold". This was only the beginning of EA's tradition of incorporating unwanted "features" into its games in lieu of actual improvements (which are much harder to program). Madden had a good run on the SNES, but Madden 98 ends the series with a whimper.

While Madden 98 certainly represents a big step back, it does incorporate a few nifty new features. You actually see penalty flags lying on the field, and referees actually bring out the chains to measure first downs. Why in the hell can't they do that in modern football games?! After a spectacular play, an automatic replay is shown, although the distant camera angle actually makes it harder to tell what happened! Be careful about diving at your opponent after a play, or you may draw an unsportsman-like conduct penalty! There's a few interesting wrinkles, but when you consider how good Madden 97 was, this is a monumental letdown.
