www.nintendo.com – Nintendo 64:
There's trouble brewing in the Magic Kingdom, as Mickey, Minnie, Donald, and Goofy are tied up in a conspiracy surrounding a mysterious stone from outer space. The shiny rock gets the crew into all sorts of trouble, and instead of settling their differences through a verbal debate, they turn to Magical Tetris!
You can pit big ears against bill in a heated bout of Magical Tetris, the latest adaptation of the wildly popular puzzler. Disney Interactive has added a few new twists to the game, including a Story Mode that transforms Tetris from a standard puzzle game into a unique Disney adventure. The plot centers around an unusual rock that Donald finds one day at his favorite fishing hole. The story varies depending on which character you choose, but each tale is teeming with Tetris action.
To successfully complete each character's adventure, you must win six Tetris matches. Goofy, for example, wants to use the shiny stone as a hood ornament for his tractor. To gain this status symbol, he has to beat all of his friends in Tetris, and then go muzzle to snout with the shifty Weasel , the Big Bad Wolf, and Pete. The matches become progressively more challenging along the way, and even the "Very Easy" setting becomes quite difficult during the last duel.
The game play consists of standard Tetris puzzle solving, but Disney has waved its wand over the pieces to create bizarre new shapes and a new approach to the action. Each time you clear two or more lines at the same time, you frustrate your foe by sending a Magic Piece to his/her screen. These pieces are shaped differently than normal Tetris pieces, and the more lines you clear simultaneously, the bigger and uglier the Magic Pieces get. Even Tetris masters start to sweat when they see a huge block that almost takes up their entire screen begin to make its descent. If your opponent sends a Magic Attack your way, you can throw it back by clearing two or more lines before the piece appears on your screen.
One of the Magic Pieces is a slender rectangle one block longer than the traditional rectangular piece. As a result, you're able to clear five lines simultaneously and earn a "Pentris". It may sound funny, but it's worth more points than a "Tetris" and is definitely more prestigious. If you prefer pure Tetris, don't worry. You can play Tetris without the Magic Pieces in "Up Down Tetris". There is also an "Endless" mode of play, which allows you to tackle either Magical Tetris or regular Tetris without going through the animated story sequences.
Even though the Disney characters appeal to a younger audience, this game is fun for people of all ages. After all, Tetris is Tetris. The Story Mode provides depth and the Magic Pieces add a unique quality to the time-tested formula, but if you've played Tetris before you should know what to expect.
