Manchester United Europe

Krisalis seem to be concentrating on sports simulations at the moment and what they're doing appears to be working. The original Manchester United wasn't really that brilliant. Thankfully, the sequel is superb and should be part of any collection. The graphics for instance, are excellent throughout, incorporating well animated players and some really nice touches. The control method is complex at first, but picked up very easily. Although it's not as good as Kick Off II, it's definitely the closest competitor.

Manchester United II is a fine game in its own right - the sheer amount of moves available to the player adds a great deal to the game and the programmers have obviously put a lot of thought into capturing the atmosphere of the big match. For those of us spoiled by the dribbling brilliance of Kick Off, self-adhesive balls which stick to boots can be a bit of a pain - but for all that there's plenty of challenge here. These days footy games have to be of the highest quality, and Man Utd II certainly scores well here. I think many people will see this as a complement to Kick Off - one to load up and enjoy when you're looking for a different angle or want to live those dreams with the Saturday superstars. As such it's well worth a serious look and Krysalis can boast a job well done.

Der Sound ist ebenfalls prächtig, die Zuschauer im Stadion gehen richtig mit; bloß die Musik ist etwas düdelig, aber die muß man sich während des Spiels ja nicht anhören. Auch die Steuerung verdient Lob, denn einerseits kommen Anfänger gut zurecht, während Fortgeschrittene richtig zaubern dürfen. Daß es unterm Strich doch (wieder) nicht ganz reichen wird, um „Kick Off“ die Butter vom Brot zu stehlen, liegt am dürftigen Optionsangebot, dem leichten Ruckeln bei der Grafik und dem Umstand, daß es nur einen Platz und keine unterschiedlichen Witterungsverhältnisse gibt. Trotzdem ist Manchester United Europe ein wirklich gelungenes Fußball-Vergnügen - so sicher, wie der Ball rund ist!

Nach dem mies spielbaren ersten Manchester-United-Programm ist diese Europa-Edition ein gewaltiger Fortschritt. Spannung und Atmosphäre der Cup-Wettbewerbe kommen gut rüber; spätestens in der Halbfinalverlängerung hält es hier keinen auf der Bank. Die Steuerung ist nicht sonderlich detailreich, erlaubt aber einen flotten Kick. Das Spiel wogt munter hin und her; Langeweile kommt so schnell nicht auf. Wenn das auf dem Amiga etwas zu rucklige Scrolling nicht wäre, könnte man die Grafik als gut bezeichnen. Die Spieler-Sprites sind sauber animiert und haben eine vernünftige Größe im Verhältnis zum Spielfeld. Spielt man gegen den Computer, ist die Langzeitmotivation eher durchwachsen. Es ist relativ leicht, einen Pokal zu gewinnen, was weder mit grafischen noch spielerischen Gags gedankt wird. Ein nettes, simples Kick-and-Rush-Festival, das ausgehungerten Fußballfans durchaus munden wird.

The absence of any sort of a league's a shame, but once you get the controls sorted it's a fair challenge for solo players and a good head to head if any of ya mates are of a mind to join in.
