The final word on Manhunt 2 is that it is fun to play if you like gory games and if you like serious content. There isn't much replay value unless you really are determined to see all the grisly cut-scenes. It isn't a game that will last in the history books as an especially meaningful entry in gaming history, mostly because the audience for it must be pretty damn niche. All the same, it sold well in its first week and may continue to do well in subsequent weeks. Like every edgy Rockstar release, I have a crapload of respect for their insistence on artistic freedom and mature content. Nobody is doing it as well as Rockstar and you have to love the creativity that goes into making such an off-the-wall title as Manhunt 2. Pick up a copy this weekend as a rental and tell me it doesn't stick in your head...

Manhunt 2 will take you to a world of sick and perverted individuals, who never hesitate to kill, for pleasure or simply in order to survive. You'll run through the corridors of an asylum, experience gruesome sequences in a sexual perverts' club or search a seemingly haunted house, as you try to survive and end the lives of the people "who did this to you". Rockstar's game is not flawless, but it uses a couple of well implemented ideas in order to offer us a gaming experience that may last longer than we think, hidden in our brains and haunting our nightmares. "How about the fact that it makes you more violent?" some of you may ask.... I don't agree with those people who claim that any media product can make a person violent, as there are many Manhunt 2 players out there who simply enjoyed the game and never even thought about hurting a fly, let alone a person. It all comes down to how sick and twisted you are.

WiiThe Review Busters
Manhunt 2 may not be as gruesome as the first game in the series, but that is fine by me. The camera work could have used a little touch up, same with the characters animations. It is a real shame this game had to be edited like this, if we could have purchased the real version of Manhunt 2 it might be better since the static in-between kills can be annoying half way through the game. There are some hacks on the Internet to fix this problem, but if you are going to do that don't ask me for help, just play the game as it is and just wait for the third game to come out, I'm sure by then things will change.

Enter this title with an open mind, like you would any other game not saddled with this type of media attention, and you could have a similar experience. The gameplay isn't perfect and the gore might be a bit much for sensitive-stomached gamers, but the story, bite-sized chapters perfect for portable play, and the overall presentation makes this one of the year's best PSP offerings.

PSPGamers' Temple, The
Being that this review is for the PSP version, I can say that as a portable 3D action game, Manhunt 2 is better than most. It won't win any awards and aside from the absolutely terrible and very unnecessary violent content, it probably won't go down in the history books. But like the first Manhunt title, Manhunt 2 can provide a pretty good time if you can see past the hype and gross-out factor.

For those of you that loved the original, Manhunt 2 is a trip that's worth taking, even if it's not nearly as memorable or enjoyable. While I applaud the series for it's uncompromising take on morality and violence, it's hard not to notice that recent tiles like Mass Effect and BioShock have covered similar territory in a more mature - and much more enjoyable - fashion.

Even though looks and controls do tend to be unsatisfactory to the point that you just ask yourself, "what on Earth have they been working on for so long?", Manhunt 2 does deliver what it promised to deliver: terrifying, bloody, dirty, gritty, mentally-unstable action, with a touch of drama, provided by a very inspired soundtrack, all held together by an upsetting, yet realistic plot. We'd like to say that Manhunt 2 isn't for those weak of heart, but the reality is that Rockstar's game isn't for anyone with a heart.

Manhunt 2 is a good fit on the PSP. Part of this has to do with the clarity of the screen, which makes execution moves look crisper than they do on consoles. Even more importantly, it doesn't feel as if anything was compromised for the less-powerful platform. Few games look this good on a handheld, and even fewer combine such technical prowess with enjoyable mechanics. If you like a good, sneaky adventure, you'll find a lot to chew on here.

I've played through and beaten both the original and Manhunt 2 multiple times on both difficulty levels, and while it's great to see Rockstar start to make this into a "franchise," it feels as though a number of things went missing in the sequel. The AI doesn't feel as good as the first game, the setting and environments don't feel as menacing, and the story is definitely weaker. That isn't to say that Manhunt 2 isn't a good game, because it is – Danny and Leo's adventure is enjoyable, especially if you've played the first title and have been waiting to eliminate enemies with plastic bags, crowbars or other household items. But as a whole, Manhunt 2 isn't the tour de force title that will grab your attention and keep you there like the first one did.

It may not have the same primal impact as the original Manhunt, but the sequel features plenty of tense stealth gameplay to complement its violent subject matter. The clarity of that violence--and some Wii-specific annoyances--makes the PlayStation 2 version the superior one. But either way you slice it and dice it, fans of the original will have something new to chew on with Manhunt 2, which is a good, sneaky adventure.

PlayStation 2GameZone
Manhunt 2 for the PlayStation 2 might not be as over-the-top as the first game but it is still a worthwhile game that’s just as gruesome and interesting in it’s own right. While much of what was behind the controversy has changed to secure an M rating, Rockstar did a great job putting story, challenging stealth mechanics and plenty of wonderfully nasty executions first and thus making it a game worth a look if you liked the first game.

PlayStation 2UGO (UnderGroundOnline)
Overall this game is better in just about every way than the original. The PS2 version isn't overly a graphical masterpiece, but for what it is the PSP version looks great for a portable game and the Wii version seems to have the best graphics out of the lot with more immersive controls. Each version of the game seems to be JUST the right length. Any more and you would probably start to run out of new things to do and any shorter and you would probably be upset. If you have a Wii get it for that, and if you are never home get it for the PSP.

Manhunt 2 isn’t exactly the ‘sequel’ I expected it to be, and I’m sure many of you will agree after spending a few hours with the game. Sure, it tells a good tale and gives you a great variety of tools to butcher your foes with, but the less-than-decent AI, irritating content censoring, and just-about-average graphics have brought this game a good many notches down. Had Rockstar spent some more time with this title and perhaps brought it out on other platforms as well, the game could’ve been so much more. For now, it’s sufficient to say that you will probably enjoy it the first play through if you’re an action/stealth fan, but this is one of those ‘sequels’ which just can’t beat the original...

PlayStation 2Gamer Within
While Manhunt 2 had to tone itself down in the end, it still pushes its mature rating as far as it can possibly go. In all, you should be able to reach the game’s two endings in about ten hours – depending on how well you do, though anyone who played through the first game should be able to breeze through this one. The Manhunt franchise has always catered to a certain type of gamer, and as long as you can look past the clouded violence, fans of the series should still find an enjoyable, solid game here. As the old adage goes, sometimes it’s what you can’t see that’s the most terrifying thing of all.
72
PSPGameZone
Still somewhat disturbing and suitably creepy, Manhunt 2 still manages to provide a chilling good time on the PSP. With decent controls and loads of stealthy kills, it might still generate plenty of controversy anyway but more mature gamers will find this worth playing if they enjoyed the PS2/Xbox original. It’s certainly not for the squeamish.

WiiNintendo Life
It might be extremely dark in subject matter, but Manhunt 2 was refreshingly better than what I expected. Of course it's not free from problems, it has a 'PS2' last-gen feel, flawed basic combat controls and an 'shooter' element that simply detracts from what I found most interesting about the game; the stealth. The criticism for its lack of moral code is partly justified, although there is nothing worse here than in a lot of modern gore films. Certainly not suitable for children, some mature adults may find Manhunt a half decent stealthy action game with a relatively interesting plot.

When you begin playing Manhunt 2 for the first time, the chances are that you'll find it hard to put down. The deep, twisting plot coupled with visuals that you thought you'd never see on a handheld refuse to let you go. However, when you've seen every single execution and discovered the mysteries of the plot (which should take around seven or eight hours), there isn't a lot of incentive to play through it again. Still, it deserves to be completed; not because it's controversial, but rather because it's actually good. The killing might seem inhumane, but it's bold, creative and stylish.

PSPGamer 2.0
Manhunt 2, though not as original and challenging as its predecessor, is a worthy sequel but not necessarily a must-buy. It’s certainly worth renting, and rental period is sufficient enough to beat the game’s 8 to 9 hour campaign. Its controversy may be better than the sum of its parts, but Manhunt 2 accomplishes a noteworthy accolade: it makes the mediocre enjoyable.

PSPGames Radar
Despite its dull parts and infuriating censorship issues, Manhunt 2 is overall a pretty satisfying experience - especially if you can convince yourself that the edited executions are somehow made more shocking by leaving the details up to your imagination. It's hardly the pinnacle of stealth games - the enemies are dumb, and there's not much to do aside from sneaking and killing - but if you're in the mood for something creepy and horrific that'll leave you feeling a little dirty, Manhunt 2's still-shocking murders and eerie, is-it-real-or-am-I-just-insane storyline won't disappoint.

It doesn't shock me that Rockstar Games decided to create a sequel to the gory 2003 stealth/horror game. It doesn't surprise me that the developers set out to make a game that is even more twisted and disturbing than the first game. And it certainly doesn't surprise me that this sequel has become a lightning rod for controversy. What does surprise me is where I'm playing this over-the-top, ultra-violent game full of brutal murders, sexual diversions and non-stop four letter words. This is the kind of thing I would expect from the PlayStation or Xbox, but I'm playing this on the Nintendo Wii. I'm not sure what to make of that.

Manhunt 2 is an average stealth game with an extreme gimmick. The story’s what-the-hell-happened scenario mixed with the weird characters and scenes is enough to keep you shuffling along. But it quickly feels like busy work, when it should feel like, well, murder. Searching for redeeming social value from this game is basically a lost cause, and with all the brutality censored there’s not much for closet miscreants to enjoy, either.

So my clinical evaluation of this demented patient that was Manhunt 2 is that the game is terminally ill. Just let it die. There is nothing here redeeming to gaming or even shock horror to bring any more attention to than it has already gotten. Call it! 1200hrs.. Flat line.

PSPThe Video Game Critic
Much has been made of the game's brutal violence, but rapid-fire camera angles and seizure-inducing flashing effects ensure you'll never get a good look at your own handiwork. The gurgling and crunching audio effects are probably the grossest aspect of the game. I really like how this portable version automatically saves your progress when you reach a checkpoint, unlike console versions where you have to save from a menu. With its short missions, simple controls, and handy auto-save, Manhunt 2 is ideal for killing on the go.

WiiWorth Playing
All in all, Manhunt 2 doesn't quite live up to the hype of its predecessor. It is incredibly violent, but it doesn't have the same effect as the original due to the muted kill sequences. The game ends fairly quickly, and there isn't much incentive to play through it again. Completing the game allows you to revisit the levels and play through a bonus level to see an alternate ending. It's nice that the Wii is getting some more adult games, but the novelty quickly wears off, and you're left committing what you think are brutal murders — although thanks to the shaky camera and hazy images, you can't really tell.

While the PlayStation 2 and PSP versions still suffer from the core faults of Manhunt 2, in particular its execution as a bland third-person stealth adventure with sub-par combat and annoyingly stylized death sequences, the kill-scene visuals in these versions are quite capable of horrifying you to the point of making you sick to your stomach. In some circles, this is a selling point. It's hard to completely blame Rockstar for all the failings of Manhunt 2, considering the ESRB's hand in crippling the developer's vision. Whether or not that vision should be considered artistic is up to you.

PSPGameDaily
Due to its underwhelming story and repetitive gameplay, Manhunt 2 is the very definition of average. It seems to dish out violence simply for the sake of violence, as well as showcase other offensive taboos that make this game appealing to only a minority of gamers. Thanks to the censoring it received, it's unlikely to please its intended audience, who would have likely purchased it with an AO rating had Sony allowed that.

PSPWorth Playing
I'm not sure what Rockstar's game design and marketing philosophies were, but Manhunt 2 for the PSP didn't have as much of an impact as did the press coverage leading up to its release. It has slapdash controls and is riddled with gameplay issues, but the game achieves what it sets out to do: be a temporary distraction that's good for relieving a bit of tension. It's a distinctly average title, but if you enjoyed the original Manhunt and need to satisfy your blood lust, you could do a lot worse than Manhunt 2.

This game is neither here nor there. Even though it has some terribly unsettling moments I have played other games before that punctuate the eeriness even more (like Silent Hill) but it is the aspect of it being “an every-day occurrence” that makes one feel uneasy about it all. The game is playable, but it just lacks that spark to stick it up there with the other greats.

Expertly crafted, unbearably intense, and ideally suited to motion control, it ticks all the boxes for a console that is still a long way from emerging from its well-publicised drought. If only Rockstar realised that, in this case, less would certainly have been more.

It's difficult to recommend Manhunt 2 in its current M-rated form to anyone. This material isn't just inappropriate for children, it's not appropriate for most of the people you know. The background material behind the storyline is well developed enough, and those with considerable tolerance for over-the-top gore and violence may derive some pleasure from it. In the end, it all comes down to the basic fact that a work of art, created specifically for a mature audience, should not have been forced to compromise the way that this game has been. Gamers who have been waiting a long time for this game to come out, or even just gamers in general, should definitely stay far away from Manhunt 2. While it is definitely not the worst game I have ever played, it is definitely one of the biggest letdowns.

WiiThe Video Game Critic
Manhunt 2 is simple stealth fun, and the only items you really need to worry are things like axes, circular saws, plastic bags, hypodermic needles, and crossbows. The cut-scenes and stages are short - which is a good thing. Checkpoints are well spaced, and you can save your progress at any time. Unfortunately, you have to sit through the same cut-scenes whenever you repeat an area, and that's just aggravating. Why can't I skip these? The background story unfolds as you uncover your past, and it's more interesting than your typical stealth tale. I tend to be jaded when it comes to complicated stealth games like Metal Gear and Splinter Cell, but I found Manhunt 2's straightforward brand of mayhem appealing.

Manhunt 2 isn't a very good looking game, it hasn't innovated at all since the first game, and there are no scares to be had in this game. But who cares? The game is full of atmosphere, has a compelling story and is more violent than just about anything else on the market. If you enjoyed the first game then you should definitely check this one out, but I must warn you - this game is not for everybody.

It's sloppy, sloppy stuff, but it could be attributable to the developer's rush to retool the game. Removing some of the objectionable content could have had a ripple effect on other aspects of the title.

Manhunt 2 is ugly on a number of levels, but visually it stands apart on the PS2 and not in a good way. Everything is a heightened caricature to give players the sense of gaming inside a nightmare, albeit one by Andy Warhol. This can be respected on its own merits, but it’s difficult to take anything seriously when the character models look, frankly, stupid. Finding the menace in a guy wearing a black suit and a gimp mask walking around on the street is a tough nut to swallow. Also, when a stripper in an S&M club looks like an animated gif, you know the artists were either woefully untalented or didn’t care enough to put forth any effort let alone their best.

Manhunt 2 will still sell well. After all, practically every video gaming parent knows about it, and I'm sure many of them are interested in it just to see what the fuss is about. In a way, the game does live up to the hype: they wanted to ban it for its gratuitous violence and I can see why. Funny how they didn't just get out and say that the game isn't worthy to be played; that would've made things much easier. As you can probably tell, I'm no stranger to controversy myself, and with this effort to save you from the agony of playing this highly-publicised washout, all I'm hoping for is that no-one will execute me.

Manhunt 2 is essentially a last-gen game that has been ported to the Wii and had a bunch of Wii-mote controls thrown at it. The atmosphere is initially loaded on in spades and you get the feeling that you could really get drawn in to the story and become a killing machine, but there are just too many gaping holes in both the plot and the gameplay to ever allow that to happen.

Despite winning the battle to get Manhunt 2 released, Rockstar has in many ways lost the war. The game feels dated, which is understandable considering it was made a couple of years ago. It is unsophisticated and at times rather clumsy compared to the stealth titles we've become used to. The storyline is good and well presented and the main characters are complex, but once again it doesn't quite stand up to the titles we have seen on the next-generation of consoles. The whole BBFC controversy and media attention will likely mean this sells well, but it is the same attention that ends up putting the game on a pedestal that it cannot justify. Fans of the original will still get enjoyment out of it, but for those who were unsure this will do nothing to make them convert.

Manhunt 2 finally released, which is good, albeit in a somewhat neutered form. But unfortunately for gamers everywhere, it fails to live up to its promise and doesn't even reach the levels of its predecessor. Its gore and extreme violence serve no real purpose and are there purely for the controversy of it, much like in the first title. In any future iterations of this series, Rockstar might be better served spending less time thinking of the most disgusting ways to kill a man and more time making their characters move like actual human beings and adding enough diversity to their title that it doesn't get old before a few hours are up.

Really, the game warrants a 4 because it's technically playable and, despite its best efforts, probably won't plunge the industry into a period of navel-gazing and political sanction. Everything else about it is largely forgettable.

While we didn’t want to wade into the violent video game debate, it’s hard not to with a game like this. Revelling in the violence it’s no wonder that even Rockstar's own employees believed they were taking a step too far. The real problem with the game though is just how horrid the experience actually is, with very few redeeming features (the musical score and sound effects being the only ones we can think of). This belongs at the bottom of the bargain bins to rot for all eternity.

Either version of the game is equally mediocre. The story holds some promise, but the action is so frustrating it's too much work to get to the meat of it. Rockstar has become a victim of their own controversy, as this game could have slipped under the radar. Manhunt 2 doesn't hold up under all the attention that the censorship conflict brought the title.
