But whether you prefer the PC’s superior visuals and mouse support or the NES’ excellent music and far greater availability, you really can’t go wrong: unlike ICOM’s MacVenture series, no attempts were made to simplify the actual gameplay for a younger audience. With two uniquely outstanding takes on this B-movie masterpiece to choose from, you’d have to be a real tuna head to pass up a night with the Edisons – and Dr. Fred is always happy to welcome new brain donors.

Although Parasite Eve is the official cinematic RPG, I believe Maniac Mansion deserves that spot. I will admit that the graphics would seem to disqualify it, but every other aspect of it reminds me of the silver screen far better than PE ever did. With wonderful music, a silly and psychotic storyline, a phenomenal amount of replay value, and average graphics (I probably shouldn't have ended on that one), Maniac Mansion is a definite classic that every RPG nut should own.

Maniac Mansion combines arcade action, visual clues, perplexing puzzles and a great sense of humor to create one of the best arcade adventure I've seen.

If you aren't a fan of point-and-click games, this one doesn't do anything so gripping that it will convert you. But, for a 15-year-old that has almost as much, if not more, to offer than some current games, Maniac mansion is worth just about any price you can find it for.

No matter whether you look at it from a historical point of view or just to find a great Adventure game - Maniac Mansion always fits. Its importance in the history of computer games is undeniable, and so is the quality of the gameplay and story.

Well a good storyline, nice design, simple controls and challenging puzzles all add up to a clean.

DOSAdventure Classic Gaming
In its early days of glory, Lucasfilm Games publishes about 1-2 adventure or quest games per year. The company is well known for the superb graphics and gameplay in its games. Among these titles is Maniac Mansion—a classic adventure game from the days when the PC XT rules the world. The game has even inspired a television series by the same name.

I love adventure games. There's probably nothing in the realm of electronic media I enjoy more than a point-and-click adventure. Unfortunately I'm a reviewer of consoles, and consoles rarely get any of these for one very good reason: It's a bitch to point and click with a gamepad. So it was, in my opinion, pretty gutsy for LucasArts (then LucasFilm Games) to take its first PC hit and license it for the NES. Sure Maniac Mansion was already a success, but the limitations of Nintendo could have easily marred the reputation of this classic. Luckily, they didn't, and the cart is almost as good as the original.

Maniac does have faults, though. You cannot control all three kids at once, they tend to wander all over the place and the lack of sound effects reduces atmosphere. However, Maniac is still an enjoyable romp.

AmigaAmiga Joker

All in all, Maniac Mansion was a fine way to help kickstart the point-and-click era back in the day. If you play adventure games more for the exploration than for complex story and characters, MM should definitely appeal to you, even today, though it hasn't stood the test of time as well as some games. Compared to later SCUMM adventures, it's been surpassed in almost every area — graphics, story, characterisation, even interface — but hey, trailblazers can't be expected to be perfect. Despite these weaknesses, it's still quite solid and enjoyable, and well worth playing, if largely for the historical relevance.

Overall, the game is fun as hell. Problem solving has never been such a pleasure until this game strolled into town. Because of its in-depth problem puzzles, it can be enjoyed by many ages. And the fun isn't lost on the replay, as you can assemble a new trio of friends, therefore creating an entirely different chain of events. The humor addition is just one extra push to making Maniac Mansion a huge success in my book. The only real complaint I have is that I'm merely borrowing this game for the review. Good luck getting it back, Paul! (Insert sinister laugh here)

If you’re looking for a p’n’c to tide you over, Maniac Mansion isn’t the one to go for. Even with its "different" routes through the game depending on the team you pick, it’s just not that fun to play through, whether you have Razor, Bernard, or Syd bring up the rear. I’d only recommend this to the person who absolutely has to play through every LucasArts games, or, if possible, if you could play it before you’ve played the later and better games. Otherwise, coming to this after the likes of the Monkey Island series (yes—even 4), Grim Fandango, and Loom is going to leave you feeling manic yourself.

The adventure displays no particular finesse in the graphics department, and the sound is typical laughable ST bleepy stuff, but in such a game none of this necessarily matters if the brain that programmed the puzzles and situations is on the ball, or at least to your personal liking.

NESThe Video Game Critic
The main problem with Maniac Mansion is its complexity, which will turn off all but the most dedicated gamers. There are dozens of items to juggle, and figuring out how each is used requires a lot of trial and error. Some solutions tend to defy logic (give the plastic fruit to the tentacle??) The order in which you complete tasks is critical, and timing is sometimes a factor as well. Last time I checked, video games were supposed to be fun, not work! My cartridge contained a battery back-up that allowed me to skip ahead to the previous owner's spot to get a peek at the advanced stages. That's right - 17 years old and the battery is still working! I know a lot of gamers have fond memories of Maniac Mansion, but I don't think this adventure has aged particularly well.
