It's not every year we get a Mario game that is this much fun. If you've never thought about owning a Game Boy Advance, this is about the best reason you will ever have for picking one up. Mario & Luigi is a masterpiece.

Mario & Luigi Superstar Saga is ultimately one of those games that no matter how hard you might try, you just can't really find anything at all to complain about. It's got an enthralling quest, a great sense of humor, an extremely playable gameplay system, and a host of some of the greatest characters in video gaming history to interact with. Super Mario RPG might have originated the idea of tossing Mario and friends into a role-playing game universe, but Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga definitely perfects it with a nearly-flawless gaming experience that should appeal to anyone who's even the slightest fan of Mario or the RPG genre. A game of this caliber doesn't come around very often, but when it does it reminds us just how great video gaming can be when a developer takes the time to get it right.

Playing in a territory outside of the Mushroom King is a truly engrossing experience, as the land is as ripe for exploration. The scenery and setup is something to behold. Of course, many locals pay homage to the Mario Bros. in their own way, via sound and sight. For instance, don't be surprise when those infectious germs from Dr. Mario make an appearance in the game, or when classic tunes from the previous installments grace your ears.

Nintendo should release Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars for the Game Boy Advance. Playing it and comparing to Mario & Luigi Superstar Saga you will find one big difference, short of brother moves. The fact is no other characters are playable. The one thing I love about a game is a choice, a choice to pick other characters, cars or weapons. The aforementioned is the only short side of Mario & Luigi Superstar Saga. The game is still fun, but the extras are not there. It is a basic role-playing game featuring the plumber brothers from New York.

As much as I want to give this game a perfect ten, there’s one thing that keeps me from doing so- it’s the fact that the game is relatively short. If it were longer, I’d have immediately presented it with a ten. This game is absolutely brilliant in every way, and I recommend immediately buying it. Whether you love or hate RPGs, I feel that you’ll find something you can’t resist in Mario & Luigi. Never before have I felt so submerged and into a Mario game. The story is a perfect fit to a virtually perfect game, the controls are intuitive and brilliantly done, the battle system makes every battle fun, and there’s humor at every turn. I’m going to give this game a 9.9 without any regret or remorse whatsoever. Very rarely will I award a game such a high score without some doubt. And believe me, if it were longer I’d regret ten being the highest number on the scale. I am in love with this game. Absolute brilliance, Nintnedo. Bravo, and encore.

There is not much to find fault with in this game beyond the initial frustration with controlling both brothers. Mario and Luigi: Superstar Saga is one GBA game you just have to purchase this holiday season with its well-crafted story, beautiful graphics and very exciting gameplay!

Every GameBoy Advance owner should have a copy of Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga in their game library. It comes highly recommended and it’s chock-a-block full of action, strategy, humor, mini-games, it'll take many hours to finish, and Luigi finally gets some props. Buy!

Mario & Luigi is a worthy unofficial sequel to Paper Mario and Super Mario RPG. While the elements within the game are a tad bit different, the overall adventure is just as fun and exciting as its predecessors and you'll simply become addicted to the game rather quick. I honestly had a hard time putting this game down and really found it to be one of the most enjoyable experiences to be had on the GBA. The presentation is charming, the writing is witty, the control is well implemented, and the game is simply a lot of fun. If you own a GBA, this game had best be on your holiday wish list, because it is simply one of the best RPGs on the GBA to date.

Mario & Luigi is a remarkably full, wonderful experience that you can play anywhere. It pays loving tribute to its heritage while offering many new ideas and twists on old ones. It’s a long, satisfying handheld adventure that is actually superior to both of its beloved predecessors. In fact, it’s one of the best RPGs I’ve ever played, and that’s saying a whole lot. Rare indeed is the game that can bring a perpetual smile to your face and a constant pressure on the gamer part of your brain. This is one such game, an instant classic that belongs in every GBA owner’s hands and heart.

Reviewing this game was difficult. Not because I had a hard time deciding whether it was any good (that was obvious in the first fifteen minutes of play), But because I constantly had to fight for control of my Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga cartridge with a 12 year-old girl and a 36 year-old man. Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga is a great example of the unique, satisfying gameplay that typifies the Nintendo Difference. While you won’t find a single gameplay element that wasn’t used in another Nintendo game, outside of the ability to control both Mario brothers at the same time, Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga brings these elements together in a unique, original manner that tells a quirky, fun story. The game might be something you can fly through quickly, but you’ll enjoy every second of the journey. I recommend this game to everyone and encourage you to pick up this under-promoted gem.

Overall M&L is a joy to behold. It belongs in every GBA owner's "Must Own" list and will not disappoint. RPG'ers will love it because of its RPG elements while non-RPG'ers will love it because it breaks from the norm and adds in heavy action elements. A decent, not too long playtime combined with minigames and hidden stuff galore help to make a purchase of this game a no-brainer. All in all a pleasant surprise that has me waiting on baited breath for the sequel.

From the opening moments of Superstar Saga, you know this is not a standard Mario game. Yet in typical Mario fashion, deviation from the formula yields some outstanding results.
Game Boy AdvanceGameZone
One thing that most RPGs and most Nintendo games in general have in common are mini-games. Superstar Saga has some, and while some of them sound crazy, they're actually a lot of fun. One mini-game is an elaborate jump-roping contest. Two (friends? Foes?) hold the rope and move it in a crazy pattern that's not easy to predict at first. If Mario or Luigi gets hit the rope three times the mini-game is over. You can re-start the mini-game at any time. If you'd prefer to skip it and stick to the main quest, you can. This should give some relief to the gamers who feared they'd have to spend the whole game worrying about this stuff. I'm not usually fan of simple mini-games, but Superstar Saga's are highly addictive.

The game's dialog is exceedingly funny and has a sense of anime-style jokes that Mario veterans are likely to understand more than any others. To top things off, Nintendo has added a feature to the game that allows the Nintendo GameCube controller can start to rumble. The resolution of the game on a TV isn't half bad either, and it should keep Cubers without GBA's happy to know that they can still play one of this year's best titles on their GameCube. If you and a friend are tired with either part of the quest, this ' and like all others ' has the original Mario Bros. available to play on it. All in all, Mario & Luigi has superstar graphics, stellar sound, outrageous gameplay and a hilarious story. This is the true sequel to Square's Super Mario RPG, and those words can mean a lot to loads of Mario fans.

I thoroughly enjoyed this game. I clocked in more than 30 hours playing it. If you happen to stumble across it I recommend picking it up if you like RPG games. It;s pretty clean other than some sibling rivalry.

In the end, Mario and Luigi: Superstar Saga is an impressive new entry in the Mario franchise that is not to be missed. Strong visuals, a goofy story, rich gameplay, and a lengthy quest all combine to make one of the best experiences on the Game Boy Advance this year. It's also one that has some merits when played on the GameCube as well, thanks to the game's support of rumble when used with the Game Boy Player. The only beef to be had is with the lack of any kind of multiplayer support, but that's a minor point. As the first entry in what may well be a Game Boy Advance series, Mario and Luigi delivers in every way.

That’s why I think the real charm of this game is in that it is just so damn funny - be it Toad accidentally getting a glimpse of Mario in the shower and freaking out, or being able to pull a hilarious pose for your passport photo that gets displayed in your inventory screen. Everything has been done for maximum amusement and enjoyment value, particularly I think for the Mario fans that will no doubt find a lot of the jokes funnier than a newbie like me (particularly if you know anything about the history of the Mario games). Its nice to see fans of the games rewarded for their loyalty in this game, without isolating newcomers.

M&L is a long handheld game, with well over 10 hours of play. I suggest picking M&L up today, it is the best Mario game since Sunshine and one of my favorite RPG's of all-time.

Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga is exactly the kind of game that can make anyone a fan of Mario and his adventures. The little plumber's run and jump games are often difficult for folks to finish but with an RPG, you don't have to rely on your gamepad-fu to win. Smart players will find plenty of strategy in the battles and the action crowd will enjoy the timing and precision of combat. Everyone will laugh out loud at the crazy antics of Mario and his friends. This is one Game Boy Advance game that just about anyone should enjoy.

As well as being chock-lull of grinworthy gameplay, this is a funny game. Like Paper Mario (and the SNES Mario RPG) before it. Superstar Saga Isn't afraid to poke fun at itself and horse around. The writing is hilarious we especially like the evil Fawful and his entertaining speeches (we guarantee you 'll chuckle when he starts going on about mustard). Sometimes the control can be a bit fiddly and confusing but that's about all that we can find fault with here. Superstar Sega is as essential to your GBA as any of the Mario Advance games, and that's high praise indeed. Play it!

SuperStar Saga can be best summed up by calling it a RPG for non-RPG gamers. Each battle is action packed and offers a lot more than traditional menu based games. RPG fans will love it and so will non-RPG players. Nintendo has successfully reached out to everyone on this game. The combat system, controlling two characters, well animated sprites, and the humorous theme will make any type of gamer appreciate this title. SuperStar Saga is a welcomed edition to the Mario universe and it stands out because it is an original game in a sea of remakes.

Mario and Luigi: Superstar Saga is about as good as it gets when it comes to light-hearted RPG entertainment. No, the game won't impress you with character creation options or dazzle you with magical spells, but its style will often bring a smile to your face. And, while the quest is far from the longest we've seen in an RPG, it's a fun one that might just warrant multiple trips through. Highly recommended for those looking for a lighthearted and fun to play RPG.
Game Boy AdvancePocket Gamer UK
Ultimately the essence of the game revolves around standard role-playing principles, with item and action acquisition, thorough environment exploration, and turn-based battles that are central to progress. But the system governing the two central protagonists ensures the experience feels a lot more immediate, a lot more like a platform game. When combined with Superstar Saga's comedy-filled, brightly-coloured world, only someone with a heart of stone would deny Mario and Luigi their deserved glory as one of the planet's most entertaining sibling double-acts.

Superstar Saga is more than just an RPG with Mario characters, much like its predecessors. It has as much right to sit up there in the definition of "fun" and "joy" as Super Mario RPG and Paper Mario. The two-character system yields delight and reward constantly throughout every single part of the game. Things never slack off either due to the brilliant storyline and characters, whilst the tricky combat and devious puzzles keep attention fixated. This is a complete package and one that is practically flawless. Sure it has to end sometime, but there is a lot of enjoyable gaming to get through before the conclusion is reached. An absolute must-buy for any handheld owner.

That, in the end, is probably the most important thing that can be said of Superstar Saga. While it does not feature the best graphics or music in the world, it is fun to play. While not terribly original or masterfully scripted, it is fun to play. Despite lacking difficulty and length, it is a lot of fun to play, and that is one thing for which Nintendo's first and second-party titles can usually be counted upon. Perhaps that is why it is, more often than not, a safe bet to purchase a title put out by the Big N: a track record of consistently enjoyable games, which Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga can now count itself one of.

If you are from Europe, then chances are you never played Super Mario RPG due to it never reaching our shores and the import versions of the SNES title not working with any converters. In fact, most Europeans will not have enjoyed Paper Mario for the N64 either, due to the lack of marketing drive from Nintendo when it arrived late in the 64-bit console's lifespan. But hey, you have your chance now .

Mario and Luigi: Superstar Saga is destined to become a classic. A classic in a long line of Mario classics. Excellent gameplay, vibrant graphics, beautiful sound, and an intriguing story make this one of the best GBA titles, overall, to be released for the hand held console to date.
Game Boy AdvanceEurogamer.net (UK)
Mario & Luigi, however, truly stamps its feet on a European Goomba's head, no doubt prancing upward to claim a Mushroom-shaped bonus for managing to please everybody. Instead of shoe-horning existing characters and ideas into a traditional RPG mould, developer Alpha Dream has done things completely the other way round - examining the characters' strengths and weaknesses, their tools, abilities and environments, and crafting an exceptional and humorous RPG that reinvents turn-based combat for the better and challenges the best Zeldas for sheer ingenuity. It has also developed one of very few GBA games this year to justify its price tag, and then released it in Europe. Sniff! What more is there to say? Fortunately rather a lot.

Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga opens with players set off to solve the mystery of Princess Peach's stolen voice. See, as the story goes, a mysterious guest pays Peach a visit...sucking up her voice into a device and replacing it with an explosive (literally) vocabulary. With her vocal chords causing destruction, Bowser cannot rightfully kidnap her or she'll completely wreck his castle. So, in an act of desperation, he recruits the help of Mario and the reluctant hero Luigi to assist in getting her voice back.

Of the four Mario RPG games currently available, Superstar Saga is my least favorite. That’s not to say it isn’t fun, though, because it is and comes as a highly recommended game to take on the go. The story is a little weak, directionless, and hokey, so you RPG fans who demand a solid plot might find yourself somewhat bored. However, the interactivity is fun and refreshing and is enough to turn any ex-RPG fan into a believer, despite the drawbacks that come with it. And did I mention it’s a GBA game that actually shows some work went into it? So what are you waiting for? Go!
Game Boy AdvanceGame Critics
AlphaDream's invigorating design touches have helped Nintendo further immortalize their 2D craftsmanship, and Superstar Saga is a tantalizing glimpse of the new handheld adventures we can expect now that Mario's back-catalogue has been comprehensively plundered. It is also ample proof that the mustachioed brothers still represent everything that is great about Nintendo gaming: rock-solid gameplay mechanics, inspired design choices, and effortless genre-fusing. The heroic jumping twosome may be looking somewhat quaint nowadays, but only a fool would dismiss the values they stand for. Superstars? Oh they're much more than that.

Game Boy Advance1UP
This is actually one of the game's greatest weaknesses. Mario RPG and Paper Mario were generally weighted in favor of players who mastered the rhythm and timing of battle, but Mario & Luigi is balanced so that even the most inept gamer has a solid chance of winning.
Game Boy AdvanceNetjak
I was honestly prepared, about five hours into playing Mario and Luigi: Superstar Saga, to give it a much lower score than I’d originally hoped to. The first few hours of the game can be extremely tedious, and thus the game may not be for players who have limited time for games and really can’t dedicate a good amount of play time to the game. After those first few hours, though, I really appreciated how good the game can be, given time. That said, for dedicated Mario fans or anyone who’s looking to become a dedicated Mario fan, however, Mario and Luigi really is a delightful game once you get into it. It may not be quite as deep or involved as some diehard RPG fans might like, but for that reason, it’s easily accessible and worth your money and time to experience.

Mario and Luigi: Superstar Saga is an unusually brilliant release, which (for once) didn't see the light of day on the SNES. This makes it all the more essential, either for those with strong RPG preferences, or for anyone who might not have previously been 'into' them. Superstar Saga attempts to bridge the gap between epic and immediate, and for the most part, it does this exceptionally well. And really, what more could you ask for? At least it's better than that film which starred Bob Hoskins!
Game Boy AdvanceDigital Press - Classic Video Games
Overall this game suffers from a few problems that are nit picky enough to make this game often irritating to play. While in no means in Mario & Luigi a bad game, in fact its a very good game, only some of its little problems turn into big issues a few hours into the game.
Game Boy AdvanceGamePro (US)
The Mario Bros. star in an RPG with a great combat system and an awesome sense of humor. Do inside jokes make good video games If Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga is any indication, then the answer is yes. It’s an insane, joyous RPG ode to the Bros. history and future, lunacy with a knowing wink and a smile. Too bad there’s not just a wee bit more wisdom to go with the madness.
Game Boy AdvanceGameSpy
Despite the fact that Superstar Saga is billed as an RPG, there isn't really any more role-playing than you'd find in any other Mario game. You simultaneously control Mario and Luigi and use their jumping and hammering skills to defeat the nefarious Cackletta, who has stolen Princess Peach's voice and is threatening to destroy the Beanbean Kingdom. The plotline doesn't exactly reinvent the wheel, but no one's really complained about that during Mario's twenty-year career, so we'll let it slide.
Game Boy AdvanceIC-Games
Now in closing, I’d just like to bring up a few extra thoughts. We already discussed the ‘shrooms and the “herbs.” The brothers also ingest “nuts” (pills) and “syrup” (probably heroin). They think their hands can shoot fire or lightning, and the setting can only be described as psychedelic. They both grow big fluffy mustaches and even receive special treatment in certain situations based on the prowess of their “staches.” At least for the love of God this game has the decency to show the ill effects of illicit drug use. Bad things just keep piling on these hippies, and at one point, Mario’s apparent girlfriend is kidnapped by a dealer of some sort. Mario even od’s on something called an “invincishroom.” But don’t be lulled in. They fix all these problems with, guess what, more drugs. This is a far cry from an after school special, or even that episode of Saved by the Bell where Jesse gets hooked on speed. Nintendo, you may have tricked the rest of America, but not me. Not me.
Game Boy AdvanceThe Video Game Critic
Your quest begins slowly, but gradually sucks you in. Like any RPG, each mission is broken into a series of smaller tasks, and sometimes you forget what your original goal was. A revamped version of the original Mario Brothers arcade game is included, but it's disappointing. Even so, Superstar Saga deserves a thumbs up. It's very challenging, incorporates a great deal of action, and its thoughtfully-designed stages have Nintendo written all over them.
Game Boy AdvanceGameCola.net
In the grand scheme of all things Mario and all things role-playing, I’d put this between above Paper Mario, but below Super Mario RPG. The visuals are a lot less goofy than the former, and the characters more interesting, but the characters aren’t as interesting as they are in the latter, and the latter features less emphasis on timed attacks. But heck, if you like either of those titles, you’re bound to like this one, too. It takes roughly 20-25 hours to beat, more if you’re up to doing all the side-quests and junk, and it’s more-or-less worth the $30 it costs new.
