Whether or not you're a racket buff, you can find plenty of cool gameplay in Mario's Tennis. It isn't Wimbledon, but the tennis is virtually the same.
While not a particularly loaded Tennis game when it comes to options (it's strictly one player action) Mario's Tennis is a great playing and fantastic looking game. The environments are simply a joy to play on and the control is dead on. Anyone can pick up this tennis game and instantly dial in the controls. I'll tell you one thing, once you've played tennis in 3-D it's hard to imagine playing any other way. Now bring on a game with actual players!
The Video Game Critic
The only drawback to doubles is how you can't always see what your partner is doing due to the close camera angle, but it's still a nice option to have. To excel at Mario Tennis, you really need to learn how to play the net, since overhead smashes and drop shots are key to beating the game on the hard level. Mario Tennis is a quality title that set the standard quite high for Virtual Boy games.
All Game Guide
A tennis game wouldn't be complete without a few faults (snicker, snicker), and this one is no different. Minor quibbles include the lack of league play, saved statistics, and multiple court surfaces such as grass or clay to compete on. It also would have been nice to play as or against more characters, with at least 14 to choose from instead of only seven. Apparently both Wario and Bowser had prior commitments... Yet Mario's Tennis remains an extremely entertaining arcade experience, one where it's easy to pick up but difficult to put down.
Digital Press - Classic Video Games
While most players would've preferred a classic Mario adventure as opposed to this, you can't really argue that this game isn't worthy of it's title. The pick-up-and-play style lets anyone immediately step up to the challenge, regardless of their skill level. While a little more work could've been spent creating some new game modes, this game can still help people kill a few hours if they need to.
The small character roster makes the tournaments laughably short but this is a solid, if simple, tennis game. Good music and graphics combined with the excellent 3D effect of the court ensure that Mario’s Tennis is an excellent introduction to the Virtual Boy, plus it's cheap and easy to find these days. If only Nintendo had released that link cable, though..
Not the best title available, but a good solid play that can stand the test of time, enhanced with a depth that only the Virtual Boy can offer. Tennis anyone?

It would be hard to recommend a Virtual Boy to a casual retro gamer, because they cost so much and have such a limited library. On the other hand, they have a definite wow, uniqueness factor. And if you already have one, Mario's Tennis is cheap, definitely worth a pickup.
Would I ever recommend Mario's Tennis over any other of the Mario Tennis games? Heck, no. Would I recommend Mario's Tennis for the Virtual Boy in general? Well, only if you really need a tennis game for your Virtual Boy... because this is the only one. It's a good distraction for about ten minutes, but it will never claw its way to the top of your favourite games list.
It's not that the game is bad, it's a fun little game, but it's difficult to play for an extended amount of time, and pulls off as nothing more than a novelty item. It's a shame, this game had real potential.
