When it comes to sound, graphics, and voice acting, this thing is Hollywood—it’s so next-gen it hurts. Cinematics are a step ahead of the in-game engine, but the engine looks so good it’s hard to be picky. Character animations are incredible. Combine that with destructible environments, ready to wield objects, and spot-on collision detection and you have an instant classic. Have no doubt—this is the next level of action RPG.

Right off the bat, I have to say that this game is definitely for fans of Gauntlet style games (the newer ones) and Marvel fans, alike. However, with the light strategy that is inserted and the overall high production value of Marvel Ultimate Alliance, I highly recommend it to anyone who thinks they might like it. Marvel Ultimate Alliance is a game you'll come back to, just for the fun of it.

Marvel: Ultimate Alliance successfully integrates Marvel’s cast of characters with Raven’s established gameplay engine. The game includes tons of gameplay, a plethora of Marvel characters, a great presentation, and successfully balances the action and RPG elements, while letting players choose just how much they want to micromanage. Marvel: Ultimate Alliance has something for everyone: Marvel fans, those looking for an easygoing blast-a-thon, and even more RPG-centric action RPG fans. Those choosing between the PS3 and Xbox 360 versions of the game should determine whether they want to unlock achievements on Xbox 360 or experiment with the Sixaxis controller and run the game in 1080p since the games are otherwise identical.

If you’ve got four controllers and some friends to play with, then I’d highly recommend checking out Marvel Ultimate Alliance. It may have a few glitches, but the extremely replayable and customizable nature of the game make it a very entertaining experience.

Marvel: Ultimate Alliance comes from the same group responsible for X-Men Legends and its sequel, and it's obvious that Raven now has the formula down to a science. First, pick four super friends from the side of justice, and join them on their mostly linear adventures. Perfect powers, gather collectible gear, and vanquish arch enemies. Dispatch enough evil filth, and each hero unlocks alternate costumes with upgradeable powers. These aren't just glorified skins, either: Wolverine looks completely different in his classic form than he does in jeans and a singlet. Though the core experience may be familiar, it is far from stale.

Viewed with a top-down perspective, MUA looks pretty muddy and pixilated on the Wii. I’m no graphics whore by any means, but sometimes the game looks downright ugly compared to the 360 version. Despite this, everything is well-designed, and there is a huge variety in environments. You’ll travel to circuses, rooftops, outer space, and a castle in your quest to topple Dr. Doom.

Marvel: Ultimate Alliance is exactly what X-Men Legends I and II were aiming to be. More over, most Marvel fans will be satisfied with this thoughtfully crafted title. It sets the foundation and future for the franchise on the next-generation. However, if Ultimate Alliance had better playable characters, improved customization and a little more of a challenge in places it would indeed be perfect. However (the last one I promise), being just off from perfect gives us all a little humbleness. If you love brawlers, if you love superheroes, Marvel: Ultimate Alliance is a must have for now and this holiday season.

In the end, Marvel: Ultimate Alliance is a nice refresher from the X-Men Legends series, and a game no comic fan should miss. If you enjoy the arcade-style titles of this nature (such as Gauntlet or the previous Legends titles), you'd also do well to pick the game up. With the versions being almost identical other than superior graphics for the 360 and a few exclusive characters scattered throughout the consoles, there's not a lot to make you pick one over the other. If you have an Xbox 360, however, you'd do well to pay the extra bucks to get the 360 version, as the superior graphics and Live gameplay are well worth it. Don't worry, true believers, because Raven has proven once again that not all comic-based games are sub-par.

The spirit of the successful X-Men Legends games lives on in Marvel: Ultimate Alliance, and it provides a bigger and better gameplay experience. While it may not be an enthralling single-player title, it has some of the best co-op gameplay available. If you’ve got four controllers and some friends to play with, then I’d highly recommend checking out Marvel Ultimate Alliance. It may have a few glitches, but the extremely replayable and customizable nature of the game make it a very entertaining experience.

Just when you think you have seen just about everything they can do with the super-hero, action-RPG genre Raven manages to take it up yet another notch. Admittedly, most of the enhancements in Marvel: Ultimate Alliance are about quantity and your ability and freedom to choose how to play and who to play with. Gameplay hasn’t really evolved that much from the super-hero games we were playing last year, but the presentation sure has. So, if you love comics, super-heroes, or just want to experience a fun and challenging action-RPG, Ultimate Alliance delivers the goods. Sure, the levels and even the gameplay get a bit repetitive at times, but there is always great action and the potential to share that action with your friends, and that is what really make this game rise above its predecessors and a total joy to play.

Overall, Marvel: Ultimate Alliance is a real treat to all types of gamers, along with fans of comics. While nothing new is brought to the industry, the four-player campaign is something that has been shown successful, and definitely was a great feature to implement. This is recommended to anyone who likes violence, RPGs, and large casts of characters.

Any way you slice it, Marvel Ultimate Alliance is a fun, satisfying game that should appeal to casual Marvel fans as well as those who have a years worth of Spider-Man underoos squirreled away for "emergencies". It also very consciously leaves large swaths of the Marvel Universe unexplored, thus clearly setting up for a host of sequels that will surpass it as handily as it has surpassed the two X-Men Legends games. So if you dig this game, you've likely got plenty to look forward too. Unless you've got glaucoma. Then probably not so much.

Being a bit of a Marvel fan – not so much the recent stuff – I had a ton of fun with Marvel Ultimate Alliance, more so than X-Men Legends: Rise of Apocalypse. Besides just being fun and funny (I found the Pitfall mini-game hilarious for some reason) for Marvel fans, there’s enough here to warrant keeping the game in rotation long after its release. Of course, there's room for improvement, like adding more characters to the playable roster, but the game is left wide-open for a sequel so expect to see an Ultimate Alliance 2.

As I said before, comic book fans will take to this one like a fat guy to an all you can eat buffet (in some cases we are talking about the same person), but players who are looking for an action RPG that offers great visuals, polished gameplay and solid co-op for the roughly 20 hours to complete the game should pick up Marvel Ultimate Alliance. I don't really need another excuse to wear tights and a cape but if it prevents yet another restraining order from the neighbors, I'll take it.

Raven Software has been on a roll lately with its comic book adaptations. First it was the X-Men Legends series revitalizing the heroes, and now they're taking it one step further with Marvel Ultimate Alliance, which includes heroes from all over the Marvel Universe, and of course a healthy dose of villains as well. The game is similar in many ways to the X-Men Legends games it's modeled after with some nice inclusions to differentiate itself.

The game gives you the sense that you can affect how the story ends by certain decisions you make, but these choices are usually pretty superficial and not really worth playing through the entire game again for. The unlockable hard mode is much more attractive since you can import the buffed-up team you already beat the game with. Marvel: Ultimate Alliance is a robust game regardless of the platform you play it on, though there's something especially impressive about the volume of content in the PSP version. Beyond being a well-made and accessible action RPG, Marvel: Ultimate Alliance captures the essence of the Marvel Universe, an incredible feat considering the breadth of the source material, though there are just enough omissions to easily justify a sequel. This is simply a must-have for Marvel fans, though the action itself remains satisfying enough for those in search of a good dungeon crawler to enjoy.

Marvel: Ultimate Alliance is a fun way to play as your favorite Marvel superhero. There are some noticeable shortcomings and flaws in the gameplay. Marvel: Ultimate Alliance is one of those games that doesn't have a ton of faults, yet isn't among the true classics of gaming. Despite a few welcome wrinkles to combat and character customization, this is pretty much the same game we have seen before. The level design and puzzles are a snooze, lacking any innovation. But who cares? This game is about gathering a few friends and laying the smack down on some villains. MUA is not a brilliant game, but it's fun. And that's all that really matters. If you love the pitter-patter of fingers on buttons, grab this game. It will satisfy the comic-book geek buried deep in your soul.

There are only a small number of superhero games being released this year, and an even smaller number are actually worth your time. With Marvel: Ultimate Alliance, there's a lot of fun to be had with the slew of comic legends at your disposal. If you're a fan of X-Men Legends, then it's safe to say that MUA is right up your alley. If you dig either dungeon crawlers or some of the biggest icons in comics, you'll probably enjoy what Ultimate Alliance has to offer. While the role-playing element of this title falls flat, Marvel Ultimate Alliance is still very good times. The production values are nothing stellar, but the smooth gameplay, varied character progression and customization and the cooperative play options more than make up for it. Give it a rent.

Is Marvel: Ultimate Alliance worth the MSRP price for the single player? Depending on the difficulty level played, the single player game could be knocked out in a rental period on Easy. The latter two levels require more of a time investment and picking up achievements requires many hours. For Marvel fanatics, I recommend picking this up around the $30 to $40 mark. Everyone else should give it a rent and see if the single player campaign plus the limited co-op mode is worth shelling out the bucks for.

While this game isn’t a must buy, it is a must play for RPG fans, especially those who own the X-Men Legend series of games. However it is those people which actually may not like the game because it is so close to the XML formula. Generally, the change of universe and characters should be enough to keep this going but if a sequel is going to be made (and considering the history of XML, we can’t see it not coming) then some changes are definitely in order.

Summing up and the few niggles aside with me probably being classed as overly picky, Marvel Ultimate Alliance will appeal to any true Marvel fan, and even to players “God forgive you” that have never glanced at a Marvel comic will still love this title. If you like your RPG games and love to kick the what-sits out of hordes of enemies, then Marvel Ultimate Alliance is definitely a “one to buy” title.

Control complaints aside, though, Alliance is an undoubtedly a triumph in most ways. The immense stable of heroes and villains, stylish environments, depth of customization, and superb storyline will keep you entertained for a long time; there is easily 20 hours of dungeon crawling going on here. Do everyone a favor, though, and be sure that your forearms are up to the task.

Marvel Ultimate Alliance is a fun and addictive action RPG that tries and succeeds in improving on the genre. For anyone that has played X-Men Legends or Baldurs Gate I highly recommend purchasing this title as well as anyone that has ever fantasized about having super powers. With over 20 superheroes to choose from chances are your favorite superhero is playable.

If you can suspend your disbelief and imagine Thor being stopped by a locked door (and you can get into the rehashed dungeon-crawling gameplay), there's a lot to enjoy with Marvel Ultimate Alliance. It's a well-made game that you can try again and again with numerous heroes and their plethora of powers. If you're a comic-book fan, this is probably the most satisfying videogame ever made for you. Whether you're going solo or want to save the universe with some friends, sweet Christmas, this is great way to do it!

Whether you like this game or not will likely depend on how much you can either get into the theme or the management of your characters. Despite the variation in everything, it is going to be touch and go for some people as to whether they can take the repetitive nature of the game. Ultimately, the game is limited by its very nature – hack 'n' slash games are simple and repetitive – but Marvel: Ultimate Alliance does everything possible to distract from this – I don't think it could be done much better without changing the very nature of the game. Also, playing with a friend or three over Live (or even on the same machine) will almost certainly make the 20 hours of the game's campaign fly by.

Chances are very good that by now you have probably tried this out on another console so that leaves this title feeling a little dated, even though it only came out like a month later. If you haven't played Marvel: Ultimate Alliance and you're looking for a good game to test your PlayStation 3 out with then you should consider picking it up. It's the gameplay and atmosphere that really sell Ultimate Alliance and those two points alone are the reason enough to play it. There's a lot of stuff here for comic book fans to sink their teeth into and in the end it tastes very good.

My time with Marvel: Ultimate Alliance was a pretty polarizing experience. Smashing through it with a friend or two, the levels all seemed about the right length, with the various bosses all well placed, and only dragged in spots where challenges forced us to drag around blocks to proceed. Slugging through it alone, and the game seemed to drag, with more time was spent micromanaging my team to punch through the mediocre ally AI. There's a lot of levels, characters, and optional goodies to collect up and covet, including enough story on the mythos of the Marvel universe to convert new fans. Diehard Marvel fans will like it either way, but for others it's a solid brawler that will last through many gaming sessions, especially if you bring a friend along.

Given how popular the X-Men Legends titles have been, it stands to reason that many gamers out there have been looking forward to Marvel Ultimate Alliance. For the most part the game is a successful follow on from the X-Men Legends series and it's fair to say that fans of those games will enjoy what Marvel Ultimate Alliance has to offer. In some respects the game does disappoint. The frame rate is poor at times and the motion-sensing support for the Sixaxis controller feels tacked-on and I suspect most will choose to disable these controls. Disappointments aside though, I have to admit the game is enjoyable as a single-player game and more so as a multiplayer experience. With its support for offline and online co-operative play it's currently one of the better PlayStation 3 multiplayer experiences currently available.

Marvel Ultimate Alliance is basically a new and improved version of X-Men Legends. Now, that's not a bad thing if you liked X-Men Legends, I know I loved both of the X-Men installations. Boasting the largest cast of Marvel Characters ever assembled into a single game, Marvel Ultimate Alliance is a comic book fans dream game. Complete with a typical comic book cliche' story, Marvel Ultimate Alliance does a great job bringing the pages of Marvel to life. Although, the entire expedience might be a little simplistic and short, there is enough content to warrant more than one play through. Rent, or buy, you need to check out Marvel Ultimate Alliance, it's one of the best comic book related games ever released.

There’s really nothing wrong with Marvel: Ultimate Alliance. Solid gameplay and good controls with a slight RPG element—the game is far from bad. It’s just really easy and ordinary, which is disappointing considering the fantastic cast of characters and millions of possibilities there could be with the Marvel universe. It’s clear from the beginning that M:UA is geared towards the younger, comic-book collecting audience, but it would’ve been nice to see more for older Marvel fans or more experienced RPG gamers in general. At the end of the day, Marvel: Ultimate Alliance is a solid game with a solid premise that could use some more depth.

Marvel: Ultimate Alliance was a very good game on other systems, and it's still plenty of fun on the Nintendo Wii. It's a satisfyingly lengthy game, with loads of missions to complete and a huge assortment of comic book-inspired side missions to bring you a little more insight into the backgrounds of the game's leading characters. Be aware that you'll encounter a few glitches and snags along the way, like the occasional frame-rate hitch, some awkward jumping animations, and there's also a very confusing character progression interface that makes it way too easy to accidentally sell off a valuable trinket. Despite its flaws, gamers will have plenty of fun playing Marvel: Ultimate Alliance on the Wii. Most importantly, you won't miss your clunky old gamepad and can just concentrate on having fun.

As far as pick up and play RPGs go, Marvel: Ultimate Alliance is a keeper. It's not devoid of technical or design flaws, but its combat system, customization options, interesting storyline, and multiplayer features make it a good choice for comic fans or role-playing newbies. Plus, in a sea of launch titles primarily made up of sports games, racers, and shooters, it's a nice change of pace. In other words, it may not reinvent the wheel, but it still rolls.

If you can get past the clumsy controls, Marvel: Ultimate Alliance is a well-made and accessible action RPG. It captures the essence of the Marvel universe, an incredible feat considering the breadth of the source material, though there are just enough omissions to easily justify a sequel. Marvel: Ultimate Alliance takes what’s good from X-Men Legends, adds in more Marvel characters and does nothing else. The story itself is rather short, so the bulk of your play may be spent online with other players to find it more enjoyable. Marvel's story mode is almost beatable in a single sitting if you can bare the tedious game play Marvel offers. Small story based missions that are character exclusive add a little more depth to Ultimate Alliance, yet they bring the same tedious gameplay to the table. This RPG is one of the more basic out there for players to sink their teeth into, yet it doesn’t do enough to warrant a $60 purchase for the Xbox 360. A rental will do you nicely, or consider picking it up on the current gen consoles once the price drops. It all looks the same between the PS2, Xbox, and 360 anyway.

Fans of multiplayer action-adventure RPGs and of the Marvel universe should be pleased with Marvel: Ultimate Alliance. The sheer abundance of entertaining four-member teams that can be assembled is a blast on its own. Combined with great static gameplay and in-depth upgradeability, this deep incarnation from the creators of X-Men Legends is well worth a look. Though the motion controls are a bit strained and ill-conceived on the Wii, that hurdle can be easily crossed without any frustration and shouldn't be a deterrent. Marvel: Ultimate Alliance deserves a meaty Recommendation.

The second time was not the charm for me. As long as I was fighting and collecting loot, I was happy enough, but the fact that this game is like a carbon-copy of the earlier title, only somewhat worse, kept me from really enjoying it. Most of the enhancements in Marvel: Ultimate Alliance are about quantity and your ability and freedom to choose how to play and who to play with. Gameplay hasn’t really evolved that much from the super-hero games we were playing last year, even with the potential of the innovative Wii remote, but the presentation sure has. So, if you love comics, super-heroes, or just want to experience a fun and challenging action-RPG, Ultimate Alliance delivers the goods. Sure, the levels and even the gameplay get a bit repetitive (and painful) at times, but there is always great action and the potential to share that action with your friends.

The decision to buy Ultimate Alliance is truly dependant on what you're looking for. If you're fan of the Marvel comics then this is nothing less than a must buy. There are loads of characters, lots of good bonus features and it is perfectly worthy of the Marvel name. If, however, your interest is rather more casual then things aren't quite so clear cut. For a time you'll find Ultimate Alliance both fun and strangely addictive, but this feeling won't last for long and the basic gameplay will grow tired quickly. Co-op and online play does add a little more longevity and if you're likely to play this with friends, it certainly is another good reason to consider it.

If you have the option to invest in one of the other versions, that’s the best route to take. The “novel” controls on the Wii are more gimmicky than fun in this particular title, and absolutely nothing else in the game makes up for the lackluster presentation. This action RPG lets you create a custom team of Marvel superheroes, choosing from a cast of over 20 characters. Favourites include Spider-Man, Wolverine, Iron Man and Colossus, who is exclusive to the PS3 version. In terms of gameplay it's similar to the top-down role-players like Champions of Norrath, but with more focus on combat than levelling up. But, for some reason it's remarkably tedious. This is definitely the greatest example of comic book fan-service ever conceived, but the gamer side of my brain has too many issues with the title to let it off the hook for those reasons alone. When it comes to Marvel: Ultimate Alliance for Wii, the real question is exactly how does this game stand up to both current/next generation titles. While it’s definitely a step up from current generation, Ultimate Alliance doesn’t hold up against its next gen. counterparts, and that’s a bit disheartening. The big gamble lies in the controller, and in the end we’d honestly prefer a game like this using very minimal motion control in favor of more accuracy and dependability. [...] The most impressive part of the Marvel universe is its beautiful style and amazing art direction, and if you really want to enjoy the hybrid of living comics and action RPG gameplay, you have to play Ultimate Alliance on either 360 or PS3. As a mindless multiplayer adventure the Wii version does a fine job, but if you’re truly looking to find the superior next gen version of Ultimate Alliance, you’re going to have to go elsewhere.

If you're looking for a deep hack and slash title along the lines of Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance, look elsewhere. Marvel Ultimate Alliance is an over simplified attempt at a genre that begs for more. This just isn't hack and slash done right -- it feels more like an arcade game than anything else. And it certainly isn't worth the $60 price of admission. Perhaps a PlayStation Store download worth $20 would've suited this game better.

If you're a fan of the X-Men Legends games that have appeared over the last few years you'll know what to expect from Marvel: Ultimate Alliance, but on the Wii the simple formula has been tinkered with to the detriment of the game. The new gesture controls simply don't work well enough, and in a game that promotes button bashing the constant use of the Wii-mote is more than a little tedious. It's wonderful to see a port receive attention to the controller instead of haphazardly tossing the game out there. It's enough to raise the Wii version a step above from the expectations, but it can't be ignored that the core game is mediocre at best. Ultimate Alliance is a dream set up for comic book followers. Everyone else will simply want to play the game without the computer assistance.
