Mashed: Drive to Survive

Good party games on this generation of consoles have been few and far between. Certainly Nintendo keeps the flame lit with games like Super Monkey Ball and Mario Party, but the PS2 and Xbox tend to be neglected in this area. So for the owners of either of these console's, Mashed is a breathe of fresh air. Exhilarating, fun and beautifully simple, it's an essential party game. Perfect after pub entertainment. Or before the pub. Or when you have your mates round. Or.... look, its good anytime, just go buy it.

Die Solorennen von Mashed sind zwar nett, können aber mangels vernünftigem Karrieremodus nur einige Stunden lang motivieren. Falls Sie allerdings regelmäßig Freunde zu Besuch haben, gehört die wahnwitzige Action-Raserei umgehend auf Ihre Festplatte!

Simple Fahrphysik und verrückte Spielmodi - genug für ein gutes Fun-Rennspiel? Mashed ist eines dieser Spiele, die man am liebsten in die dunkelste Ecke feuern möchte, nur um sie im nächsten Moment wieder hervorzukramen und mit ungebrochenem Ehrgeiz weiterzuspielen. Denn: Trotz durchwachsener Technik und mitunter schlicht dümmlich positionierter Kamera macht Mashed so süchtig wie kaum ein anderes Fun-Rennspiel - jedenfalls im Mehrspieler-Modus.

Mich als Arcade-Fan macht Mashed mächtig an. Hier geht's schnell, heftig und direkt zur Sache, ohne jeglichen Heckmeck. Okay, der Titel ist nicht gerade die Claudia Schiffer der Computerspiele, dennoch hat die Mini-Optik ihren eigenen Reiz. Man spürt deutlich die Handschrift der Micro Machines-Macher Super Sonic, die am klassischen Spielprinzip genauso festhalten wie Herr Maradona am Koks. Für die fehlende Netzwerk- oder Internet-Unterstützung würde ich die Designer allerdings am liebsten auspeitschen.

I'm not saying that this should jump to the top of anyone's must-buy list, but I am totally comfortable with the statement that Drive to Survive taps into something almost primal in appeal - blowing your friends' cars up is always fun.

Overall, Mashed is a racing game in the old school sense, it reminds me of simpler times when games were addictively simple. This is arcade racing at its most basic and it's fun like it should be. If you liked old-good Micro Machines, than you are going to love this game too. If you've got a console, you'd be better off getting one of those versions over the PC.

It's encouraging to see a game like Mashed appear and revive an old school gaming concept and remind us how addictive such simple pleasures can be. But it's not the full package it could have been, and you're left mulling over a list of "if onlys". If only Supersonic had tweaked its camera system, delivered a few more tracks and considered online play, we might be talking about a must have game, as opposed to merely a highly recommended one.

Se basant trop sur des acquis et ne proposant pas un univers suffisamment personnel et détenteur d'un caractère, ce titre estampillé Empire Interactive joue admirablement bien son rôle, celui d'un petit divertissement sans grandes prétentions, mais idéal pour des soirées entre amis, si tant est que l'on passe outre une certaine monotonie. Pas du tout indispensable mais à essayer à l'occasion devant un verre de jus de fruit (pas de marque) et du Savane (mince, une marque). Dommage, vraiment.

Mashed est un petit jeu sympathique mais quelques défauts viennent ternir un tableau qui aurait pu être idyllique. Tout d'abord, la réalisation aussi bien graphique que sonore est loin d'être à la hauteur. Ensuite, la jouabilité qui reste pratiquement identique quelle que soient la voiture ou la surface de la piste et une caméra qui a parfois des réactions surprenantes. Mais le plus gros grief que l'on peut faire au jeu est certainement l'absence de mode LAN et internet ce qui vous oblige donc à jouer à plusieurs sur le même PC. C'est un problème d'autant plus important que le multi est bien le point fort du titre et qu'il aurait été très appréciable de pouvoir y jouer sur le net.

At first glance, Drive to Survive looks like a Micro Machines-inspired, top-down battle racer with cool weapons, lots of tracks and cars, and a dueling gameplay style where knocking out opponents is all that matters.

Mashed aurait pu être un excellent petit jeu, avec un mode multijoueur bien fun. Il n'arrive qu'à être très moyen et, à moins d'être complètement en manque d'un mariokart-like, vos sous durement gagnés pendant l'été pourront être plus judicieusement dépensés.

But by far the biggest red flag comes courtesy of that darned camera. Though Drive to Survive definitely has its moments, how a racing game of any description can, in essence, penalize you by pushing you to the very edge or completely out of the frame when you get too far ahead is a question for the ages. That alone is reason enough to take a pass. Though you'll have fun if you can somehow ignore this, we bet you can't.

Drive to Survive seems to have received blissfully limited distribution here in the US, so your chances of accidentally running into it in the wild are fairly slim. Still, should you have a chance encounter with this terrifically bad game, take the safest course of action and simply go the opposite direction.
