At the end of the day, Bring Down The Sky is a great side quest that gives you a bit of extra Mass Effect. Its difficulty is a bit higher than most other missions in the game, which is a good thing. There are also some pretty decent rewards by the end; although we do wish the total experience points you gain by the end were a bit more. While obviously not as deep as the main story missions, it is still arguably the best side mission in the game now and hopefully the first of many more to come.
Bring Down the Sky is a solid, at times intense start for Mass Effect DLC. It's better than many of the main game's side quests but, essentially, it follows the same format. We have high hopes for future, inevitable DLC - Bring Down the Sky offers an additional 50 Gamerscore points, leaving room for another four sets of DLC if they follow suit. Next time though we'd like to see something on a planet surface, on a greater scale and with more story elements - akin to one of Mass Effect's main story planets. That, and perhaps some more special abilities. That would be worth paying extra for.
The price - 400 Microsoft Points, or GBP 3.40 / EUR 4.80 - is certainly right for an experience this slender, but personally I'd rather have paid twice as much and got something with more substance. Maybe three missions that overlap, with a more balanced mix of action and intrigue? Something that at least requires visits to more than one location? Playing armchair developer is always a frustrating experience, but I had hoped that these optional missions might be used to serve up something new or at least delve into the background of the characters who got the short end of the story stick in the original game. What about Kaidan's tragic past? Or Tali's pilgrimage? Ashley's adorably sexy brand of militaristic racism? There's so much fertile narrative soil established by the main game that I'm honestly surprised, and a little saddened, that a company usually defined by great stories has opted not to explore it in Bring Down The Sky.
