Meat Puppet

Dit spel bewijst dat een shoot 'em up zeker baat kan hebben van een goed uitgewerkte verhaallijn, terwijl de actieliefhebbers hun hartje kunnen ophalen aan de perfect gedetailleerde vijanden en uitgebreide levels.

Meat Puppet is an extremely difficult game. You must explore the area on your own while adhering to strict time limits. To make matters worse, the map that comes in the box is incomplete and does not say anything about the first level. The game itself has no mapping function either. MP looks promising from the start, but does not pull through to the end. At first I was intrigued by the story and drawn in by the graphics. After playing for several hours it became clear that the gameplay itself does not meet expectations. For action games it's vital to have a good sense of control and feel over the character, something Meat Puppet lacks. Sex and violence sells, and PIE uses it to lure gamers. Although the game itself is gory and graphic enough, it just wasn't as fun as it is bloody. If you really want to try this out, make sure you're the patient type of person.

Verdammt, schon wieder hat sich Lotos mitten im Gefecht am Bürgersteig festgehakt! Leider ist das kein Einzelfall, die unpräzise Steuerung sorgt immer wieder für gereizte Nerven und ist das größte Ärgernis in Meat Puppet. In einem Actionspiel darf es einfach nicht vorkommen, daß die Hauptfigur den Mausbefehlen derart unwillig gehorcht. Außerdem lassen die knappen Zeitlimits leichten Unmut aufkommen: Teilweise muß Lotos so hektisch durch die Missionen hetzen wie verschlafene GameStar-Redakteure jeden Morgen zur UBahn. Davon abgesehen überzeugt mich die Mutantenjagd: Klever designte Missionen, Grafiken wie aus dem Alien-Bilderbuch sowie liebevoll animierte Gegner-Sprites vermitteln eine glaubwürdige Endzeit-Atmosphäre.

Особенностью рецензируемого мясного блюда является вопиющее отсутствие изюма. Скажу резче: помимо сюжета игра отличается от аналогичных продуктов только звуком и текстурами. То, что создатели Meat Puppet посчитали головоломками, относится скорее к недоразумениям. Да и на других фронтах новинок кот наплакал. Разве что прыжков, включая показательные упражнения "в сторону", побольше, чем в среднестатистической изометрической аркаде. Качество исполнения -- очень, но не настолько, чтобы это превалировало. Просто еще одна игра для поклонников "геометрического" взгляда на происходящее...

Meat Puppet is one of the most disappointing games we have seen in a long time. With its intriguing background plot and eye-catching graphics it could have been great game, but the lack of useable player controls make it a mediocre shooter that can be more frustrating than fun. Also, the overabundance of swearing makes Meat Puppet inappropriate for children or easily offended adults

Richtig begeistern kann mich Meat Puppet nicht. Die Hintergrundgrafik weiß zu gefallen, damit erschöpfen sich jedoch schon die Worte des Lobes. Das Gefühl, eine geschmeidige Killerin zu steuern, kommt zum Beispiel gar nicht auf, vielmehr stelzt meine Fleisch-Marionette ungelenk durch die düsteren Häuserschluchten (und diese überdecken Lotus zu allem Übel mit steter Regelmäßigkeit). Die Steuerung ähnelt zwar der von Diablo, ist aber längst nicht so komfortabel.

Obwohl der Aufwand der Entwickler für Meat Puppet mit seinen über 300 Räumen, 36000 Animationsphasen und hochauflösend gerenderten Grafiken sicherlich sehr hoch war, mag einfach keine Stimmung aufkommen. Auch ein reines Actionspiel kann mittlerweile nicht mehr ohne Hintergrundgeschichte und einige Adventureelemente auskommen. Die Zeiten von Space Invaders sind schließlich vorbei.

Unpredictable enemy AI, mouse-driven control, and nonlinear level design seem like good areas to focus on in constructing an action game. Kronos tried to do all these things, and failed at each in turn. Meat Puppet looks awkward, sounds bad, and plays worse, leaving the game player feeling frustrated and exhausted.

Had they spent as much time on the playability of the game as they did on the aesthetics, perhaps Meat Puppet could have been salvaged. With excellent graphics that are unable to mask the dreadful gameplay, Meat Puppet is a game that, to quote the band Pavement, has "miles and miles of style, so much that it's wasted."
