Mechassault has got to be the single most fun game that has come out for the XBOX in 2002. It has so many different aspects to it that it just makes the all around playing of the game enjoyable to the point where you find yourself pondering the newest and coolest way to destroy a building while you’re in school supposedly “working”. The combination of stepping on unknowing platoons of infantry and blowing up the nearest and furthest buildings from you will cause an adrenaline rush that you will rarely experience in videogames today.

For a very long time, men have dreamed about robots and piloting them. Over the decades, there have been many comics, anime, and even games made on this fascination. Some of these games take the route of being more of a simulation game, getting each part right making sure their mech is not too heavy, while others have more action elements to them. MechWarrior is similar to the first description. Players can build their own mech to their hearts desire. Microsoft wanted to make a game for their Xbox console, but they wanted it to be similar to MechWarrior but have it more action based; thus MechAssault was born. MechAssault takes all the action of MechWarrior, and expounds upon it. This game does just that and proves to be a blast to play!

This game has 12 exclussive levels already in the game as well as levels to download via XBL. There are many Mechs and Maps to unlock as well as to download. There is great multiplayer modes and XBL modes for all to play. This game will continue forever in gameplay as well as value from all the downloads possible via Xboxs online program.

Who said girl gamers can’t kick ass? I have never been into the whole Mech styled games, but MechAssault has the ease of control and astonishing look and play to make even a newcomer like myself fall in love with the game. Great graphics, cool machinery, awesome destruction. What more could a girl want, world peace?

MechAssault has its turn-offs, but you will have to look hard to find them. In my opinion, MechAssault is a great game which will provide hours of online console gaming pleasure to legions of players. The game is easy accesible to gamers of all levels and everyone will feel right at home when driving his gigantic metal warrior. Up till now, the Xbox was immediately linked with Halo, but as from now, you can be assured that MechAssault will be right up there in the Hall of Xbox Fame.

MechAssault is an action fan's dream game. It doesn't have all the options you'd want, but it does not get old. Every night I play MechAssault and every day I'm thinking about getting home so I can get in my mech again. I've listed plenty of complaints about how the online package was put together, but don't let that deter you. MechAssault online is about as good as it gets (for now). It could have been even better.

The Next Level
In the end, MechAssault may not have been on your radar, but it has certainly turned out to be one hell of a game, and deserves some quick re-evaluation if you're looking for the Xbox Live title to get. It uses old-school, pure arcade-style action to the fullest effect, yet keeps strategy intact, and combines it all with a very solid graphical package, MechAssault proves to be a real winner. This is truly the stand-out title of Xbox Live for this year. You'll be hooked.

Planning to pick up an Xbox Live Test Drive kit? Then you should make sure you get this too. Online play is definitely the way to go with MechAssault, and coupled with an enjoyable single player campaign (and incentives to actually play it, too), this is an absolute must for Live players, and by all accounts behaves better than the reportedly lag-ridden Unreal Championship. The prospect of downloadable content (option on the menu) seals the deal - MechAssault is a beautiful, addictive, mechanised feast of destruction, ideally suited to online gamers both new and old.

Adrenaline Vault, The (AVault)
Easy to pick up and learn, MechAssault smoothly introduces you to the world of BattleTech, even if you weren’t an initiate before. With controls similar to Halo, it’s easy to get started, and the weapons are easy enough to understand and use that anyone can get involved. Fans of BattleTech simulations may be a bit dismayed at the drastic simplification of the heat, weapon and armor components, but it’s hard to argue with the fast action and beautiful visuals MechAssault delivers. Finally, the introduction of online play should add significant longevity to this disc, even after the single-player mode has run its course, since the online battles are fierce and great fun. It’s a drastic departure from the MechWarrior games, but MechAssault works perfectly as a console homage to the rich BattleTech tradition.

All of the elements of the PC game that should be here are present. Gone are the sometimes impossible controls, and they have been replaced by lots more action. For those who have never played MechWarrior on the PC in all honesty it doesn't matter. The only thing you are missing is the heritage of the clans but this doesn't and won't spoil the gameplay. MechAssault has the right balance of intelligence, hardness and fun with great eye-candy to take in at the same time.

MechAssault has landed, but the world of BattleTech on the Xbox is not the same as it is for the PC. MechAssault smashes its way onto the Xbox from the PC world of BattleTech. It’s sure to assault the sensibilities of sim-minded MechWarrior purists, but the game’s single-player campaign mode is a whole ton of fun for gamers just looking to wade into combat with a mean-ass metal rig.

MechAssault isn't an overly complicated game, and this makes it a perfect choice for the Xbox Live launch. Once you get used to the game's pacing, it's easy to get good at controlling your mech, which is, of course, invaluable when you're playing online against other experienced players. The well-done campaign mode, the terrific presentation, and the variety of online modes all combine to make a truly superb final product. If you're going to buy one game with your Xbox Live starter kit, MechAssault is the one to get.

Although there's a somewhat lengthy, somewhat intense, and undeniably difficult single-player campaign to wade through, you really should be buying MechAssault for its joyous online frag festivities, which will eventually be available through Xbox Live on Nov. 15. But for those on dial-up (or worse), who want to unlock around a quarter of the fun this title delivers, by all means rent the game, play through the story mode, and then reevaluate just why you don't have DSL.

So, MechAssault is a great Mech battle game with just enough simulation and arcade style gaming elements to appeal to both MechWarrior fans and average gamers. MechAssault also only has a few minor problems that don’t take away from the game enough to hurt it. Plus, if you have Xbox Live this game could entertain you for a long time since playing other people online in Destruction (deathmatch), Last Man Standing, and Not It (a variation of tag) modes is challenging and a lot of fun. Also, with MechAssault’s downloadable content coming soon it will just add to the game's depth. The 20 challenging offline missions with 3 levels of difficulty will keep you busy for awhile even if you don’t have Xbox Live. So, I recommend it for offline gaming as much as online but if you have Xbox Live then the game has even more longevity. So, if you are looking for a great Mech action game, a new Xbox Live game or both, I recommend making MechAssault your next Xbox game.

See you then, if you dare!

Digital Press - Classic Video Games
While the game may not be remember as a classic, anyone who plays it will remember it for some time to come. Blowing up massive robotic bi-peds has never been this fun. If you can make it through the single player and see everything the game has to offer, it still deserves a place on the game shelf thanks to the excellent muti-player modes. There is no better way to kick off the online gaming experience for the mainstream. Pick it up with the Live kit.

Fans of the MechWarrior universe might have the hardest time adjusting to MechAssault’s gameplay. It’s hard to give up complexity of control and the long-standing weapon roles just to allow newer players into the fold. Then again, the high production values of MechAssault are hard to ignore. This might be the game which brings fans of twitch shooters together with the tactical wizards of past Mechwarrior incarnations, which is certainly a win for everybody.

Power Unlimited

The Video Game Critic
The graphics are about average, and the game is not glitch-free (I once got stuck in a rock). The two-player split-screen mode didn't do anything for me either. Mech Warrior is probably no longer considered a "must have" title, but it's still a fine way to kill an afternoon.

Game Critics
MechAssault is the spiritual successor of the Quake series. Not just because it's primarily about shooting things, but because it is part of the abandonment of the single-player game in favor of the multi-player. A staple of the PC world, it is increasingly becoming a reality of the console one as well. The question will be how much the traditionally isolated console fans will be willing to accept this level of change in the fundamental way that games are played and produced. With any luck, developers will be able to figure out which or the other they want to do and market the game accordingly, and thus hopefully making more coherent games than the essentially confused MechAssault.

Super Play
