Rising Sun is a mixed bad; excellent here, and pretty average there. Either way, first person shooter fans and action fans alike should buy this game. It’s an excellent mission to run through over the Christmas holidays and the production quality of EA's Medal of Honor series blows a lot of games on the Cube right out of the water.

December 7, 1941. A day that will forever live in infamy. Until this point, the United States of America had decided to stay out of World War II because they had no part in the fight. That would certainly change on this day. Pearl Harbor, on the Island of O'ahu, Hawaii, (then a territory of the United States) was attacked by the Japanese Imperial Navy, at approximately 8:00 A.M., Sunday morning. The surprise attack had been conceived by Admiral Isoroku Yamamoto. The striking force of 353 Japanese aircraft was led by Commander Mitsuo Fuchida. There had been no formal declaration of war. Approximately 100 ships of the U.S. Navy were present that morning, consisting of battleships, destroyers, cruisers and various support ships.

I'm surprised more people aren't playing this online. No, the game doesn't look as good as a SOCOM II, but the gameplay I think is pretty solid, and it's got some really good online play to it. The storyline is authentic, and draws you in. It's an all around solid effort by EA Games, and another game I will be playing online for a while.

And this is where EA Games begins it's story in the next installment of it's massively popular Medal of Honor series, named Rising Sun. You take on the role of Marine Corporal Joseph Griffin as he experiences the fiercest battles fought during WWII; crucial assignments ranging from surviving that devastating attack on Pearl Harbor, destroying the Bridge over the River Kwai, a midnight raid on Guadalcanal, and triumphing in the final showdown with Colonel Shima. You need cunning, stealth, and a good shot if you are going to not only survive, but help turn the tide of the Pacific Theater. Let see if the Medal of Honor series holds up to at least the last console version, Frontline.

Medal of Honour: Rising Sun depicts war at a high standard. It is planned exactly like World War 2 was, and blends it into a game perfectly. Single player will keep you playing for hours, than you have the multiplayer mode to play once you are sick of single player. I highly recommend this game.

Medal of Honor: Rising Sun is less a battlefield action game (Battlefield 1942) but more of an epic interactive game, cinematic and narrative based. The missions are formulated to place you in the middle of some of WWII's most dangerous and interesting battles. It succeeds in holding your interest, it succeeds in providing several evenings of entertaining, engaging gaming. We count Rising Sun as another success in the Medal of Honor series. The ending leaves the way open for a sequel. We look forward to completing the war when it becomes available.

While not making quite the same impact as Frontline, Rising Sun has its small share of thrilling moments that makes this a somewhat average installment of the Medal of Honor series. The game does, though, magnificently capture the essence of the era but it also accurately recreates war’s most brutal moments. However, even the game’s wonderfully intense story can’t hide the fact that this game seems to lead you by the hand and doesn’t offer options to keep the action fresh. Still, if it’s historical accuracy and plenty of action you crave, Rising Sun will not disappoint.

I always look forward to the new Medal of Honor, and not just because the series is one of the true blue-chippers on the FPS market. The thing that separates MOH from the pack for me is the fact that I always feel like I’m getting a little taste of what it must have been like to live through the events of World War II. In many ways, the franchise’s story and heavily researched historical elements have been more of a draw for me than gameplay.

While I appreciate the Medal of Honor franchise and what it’s done for first-person gaming, I came away from this latest installment feeling disappointed. Obviously, the PS2 can’t keep up with the big bad Box and modern PCs as far as graphics go, but the developers did what they could.

Despite the new locations and some of the strategic and even slight gameplay changes this brings, I’m not convinced that this isn’t an expansion pack. Some of the dynamic explosion effects (put to good use) are tempered by the graphics’ overall failings. Draw distance can be a problem, and this version just doesn’t look that sharp. Add on to this poor AI (although the inclination to more hand-to-hand combat by your foes is cool) and collision, and this soldier is definitely marching in place.

Like a good Saturday afternoon movie, Medal of Honor: Rising Sun provides a good amount of kicks and thrills for a quick gaming session. It has some interesting story elements ripped straight from the history books and makes history live on in a first-person shooter. While a lot of work has been done to make this an accurate experience that feels and sounds right, the gameplay itself lacks the upgrade that it needs.

World War II came and went and I'll bet you never noticed because, like me, you weren't even close to being born yet. Reduced to catching black and white war movies on late-night TV, the war is a distant non-memory. In its Medal of Honor series, EA has been bringing history to life with its historically accurate first-person shooters. After doing plenty of damage in Europe, EA brings the series to the Pacific Theater of War with Medal of Honor: Rising Sun.

Bombs falling from above. Bullets flying in all directions. Giant ships sinking like they were nothing more than scrap metal. As if you couldn't tell by the description, another chapter in the Medal of Honor series has arrived. PC gamers have been treated to a couple of Allied Assault upgrades and an all-new title that will be released early next year. This, however, is the first time console gamers have gotten the chance to play through a new Medal of Honor game since Frontline was released in May of 2002. The subtitle, "Rising Sun," was taken from your new enemy – Japan. It's Pearl Harbor all over again, and this time you have a chance to see and interact with it in polygonal form.

Being a big fan of the Medal of Honor series, this is just a game that I couldn't wait to get my hands on. Although I did here a lot of bad things about this game, I just had to test it out for myself. I went to Blockbuster to go and rent the game and got lucky because I ended up getting the last one. I Got home and popped it in the PS2. After watching the thirty seconds of logo's I finally got to play.

The Medal of Honor series has long stood as one of the best shooter series on either PC or consoles. However, the series has not quite evolved enough to keep up with the rest of the pack, with excellent WWII FPS titles like Call of Duty being thrown into the mix. However, Rising Sun makes an attempt to bring the series into unexplored territory, by taking a look at the Pacific Theater, an area that has gone largely unexplored in the WWII FPS genre. However, this entry in the Medal of Honor series just feels like more of the same, and the problems from last year’s Medal of Honor: Frontline (poor AI, choppy framerates and tough controls) are still present and even more glaring. While a fun and exciting experience most of the time, Rising Sun has a host of problems that should’ve been fixed with Frontline.

All in all, Medal of Honor: Rusing Sun is a good rental for anyone looking for a new experience. Medal of Honor fans should be cautious of the game's longevity. Only the most serious MoH fans should fork over the green to buy Rising Sun.

What's really a shame about Medal of Honor Rising Sun is that a few more months of development could have polished it into a game truly worthy of previous entries in the series. The basic framework of a Medal of Honor game is evident here, but Rising Sun's fundamental components just aren't as well-oiled as those of its predecessors. Most of the less-essential parts of the game, such as the rousing score and informative supplemental materials, are consistent with the high quality we've come to expect from the Medal of Honor name. Sadly, that contrast makes the failures of the core gameplay that much more disappointing. Diehard fans may be able to overlook the mechanical flaws in order to appreciate the game's refreshing change of venue and rich historical context, but taken purely as a shooter, Medal of Honor Rising Sun is simply not where it should be.

These days, Electronic Arts must expect the Medal of Honor games to sell solely on the strength of their name alone. The newest game in the acclaimed World War II-themed series of shooters, subtitled Rising Sun, adopts the same formula used by its predecessors, but it's fraught with lots of minor gameplay problems that eventually add up to one major headache. Rising Sun isn't completely without merit, since it comes packaged with some nice extra materials and mostly solid production values, but the weakness of the gameplay itself undermines what could have been a much more enjoyable experience.

Electronic Arts will probably have a hard time keeping the formula fresh, especially after so many iterations and in the face of Activision's Call of Duty, but I believe even in the face of those odds, Medal of Honor fans deserve better. Rising Sun begins in Pearl Harbor with a bang, but drags on to finish with a whimper.

True-blue Medal of Honor fans will still enjoy Rising Sun's cinematic style, respectful and historically accurate atmosphere, and heavily arcade feel. But for many, the game will feel too familiar in a fast-food way, lacking that old Medal of Honor magic. Here's hoping that next year's operation, a sequel to Rising Sun, will muster a return to glory.

Other issues frustrate as well. There are some clipping problems - although not too many to be fair. It's also hard to aim and even with the control sensitivity turned up to maximum it can take an age to line up the crosshair especially in aim mode. I also realised at an early stage in this game that stealth was not important, as it was just as easy to run through the levels like a bull in a china shop and it made no difference.

This game seems more tuned to be a demo. Give players the Pearl Harbor experience to lure them into buying the full game. It would work as a business strategy, but consumers won't be happy after blowing $50 when the demo gave them what they needed. With the competition it faces now, this series needs a complete overhaul before it ever stands another chance.

I’m glad that at least I didn’t have to run solo missions all the time. The brass gave me an option to have another soldier tag along to watch my back. Yeah, we had some good times back then. Kid Factor The game is a respectful representation of WWII, but it isn't a history lesson. It doesn't teach, if anything it makes the hell your grandfather (or great-grandfather) went through a little easier to understand. The game is rated Teen, because, and only because, there's no blood. There's still a lot of killing, a lot of violence, and the body count is extremely high.

All of the excitement is taken away throughout the game, since everything feels scripted. There isn’t much freedom at all and levels are designed poorly. Rising Sun will go down in history as being one of the most over-hyped, overpriced, and oversold titles of 2003, next to Enter the Matrix.

Although another four or five months of development time would have yielded a single-player experience that takes more than a day to complete, and could have tweaked the shockingly retarded enemy AI, the fact still remains that this graphics engine just isn't cutting-edge, nor cutting it any more. Extra grainy footage or not, and lame returns to the campaign to dig up cheat codes aside, this Medal of Honor experience is just good enough to romp through on a rental, should please fans of the series, but this is certainly not enough to justify a purchase.

Finally! The GameCube gets a new first-person shooting game. Thankfully, it's better than Die Hard: Vendetta, and the first decent outing for a Nintendo gamer's trigger finger since TimeSplitters 2. Electronic Arts' cozy relationship with its Sony bedfellow may be coming to an end (Bill Gates' stormtroopers are said to be discussing Xbox Live functionality as you skim over this text), but for this year's holiday season, the mighty marketing muscle of EA has given all of its key franchises a PS2 online treatment that, while not exactly enticing, is still better than a slap in the face that GameCube owners are receiving.

But ultimately Rising Sun strikes us as a massive, crushing, incredible disappointment. We can't state our sense of startled shock any more honestly. We didn't want EA to fail; on the contrary were expecting so much more after the promise of Frontline and all of its recently solid successes, but the net result is a formulaic, by the numbers FPS with zero innovation, demented AI and a crushing lack of inspiration. We can only pray for the fate of Pacific Assault. Categorically avoid this one unless you enjoy the sight of a franchise crashing and burning in a seething ball of flames. Unacceptable.

EA did it all right in previous versions, so why we are being insulted by this tedious, poorly designed and plain nasty piece of gaming we don't quite know. The graphics are awful, the levels are awful, the gameplay is poor and it has a very short lifespan. Whilst the sound is superb a game can't be worth buying on the fact that is sounds good. Yes the first level is excellent fun, but beyond that this is just plain torture. Buy Frontline for half the cost.

I don't mind linear gameplay too much – sometimes I just like to be led by the hand and blast away without having to think too much. But Rising Sun just grates – it feels like a cash in. In fact, it feels like a poor third party mod or a mission disk – not a game you are expected to part with 40 quid to play. At £20, it would be tempting, as a full price game, it just doesn't cut the mustard.

There are moments such as the Pearl Harbour opening; the final level and the sojourn to the River Kwai that make you believe that Rising Sun is a good game. But it isn't, we can forgive linearity in an otherwise superb game – such as Call of Duty, but Rising Sun just feels like a tired cash in. It may be selling like hot cakes – but your money would be better spent getting hold of Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time.
