Mega Man

If you are a fan of platformers then Mega Man is a must have. It has all of the basics of the later games in the series without all of the crazy additions like a pet robotic dog or a mega-boosting gun. If you can pick this one up for less than 10 bucks, don’t hesitate.

Mega Man is unique blend of action and platforming. The idea of learning your enemies super power was even more astonishing at the time. But Mega Man still wasn’t quite perfect. He cannot duck to evade enemy fire, and falls off ladders if he changes powers while on one. Also, the difficulty at the end of Dr. Wily’s stage can sometimes get really frustrating. Outside of these minor flaws Mega Man is a classic that no gamer should miss.

Der zum Schluss frustrierende Schwierigkeitsgrad trübt den positiven Gesamteindruck des Mega Man-Erstlings. Das abwechslungsreiche und anspruchsvolle Spielprinzip, das mit für die damaligen Verhältnisse guter technischer Umsetzung aufwartet, hätte die Höchstwertung verdient, hätte man damals etwas mehr auf die Spielbalance geachtet. Für das erste Spiel der langlebigen Reihe ist "Mega Man" nach wie vor erstaunlich gut, muss sich jedoch den fünf weiteren NES-Nachfolgern geschlagen geben.

Mega Man is an undeniable classic, and its long-requested appearance in Virtual Console form today can mean nothing but good things in the future for fans of the retro gaming download service. At a price point of 500 Wii Points and a meager hard drive storage size of just 15 blocks, it's also well worth your consideration for immediate purchase.

The basic idea of the game is you play as Mega Man the blue shooter little robot who has to defeat Dr Wily and restore peace to the world. What stands in your way is an assortment of evil robots with such names as Bombman, Gutsman, Iceman, Cutman, Elecman and Fireman. Each level is themed around the baddies special ability predictably and when you defeat them you gain their special weapon. This adds a tactical element to the game as some stages are much tougher until you get the right combination of special weapons.

MM1 still shows the rough edges of a fledgling idea, like the reuse of rather standard enemies across all levels, and the painful lack of a password system. You probably won't beat it, and if trying to turns you off to the entire series, it isn't worth playing. It's a fun challenge for fans, a basic scroller for those mostly neutral to the whole idea, and just Another Damn Mega Man Game to any gamers loathe to the overuse of the original's concepts.

Mega Man's graphics aren't exceptional, but at least they look clean and well-defined. You'll face a wide array of enemies, but most are small, and some are as simple as floating blocks. The game provides unlimited continues, so you can always pick up right where you left off. Mega Man's tunes are catchy and should bring back fond memories for long-time NES players. It may not look like much, but Mega Man's well conceived gameplay has managed to withstand the test of time.

Overall, this game is a pretty good start to what ended up being a strong franchise for Capcom. This one never saw the popularity of its first two sequels, but it is still a pretty good game and is worth checking out for any fan of action shooters.

Endlich mal wieder ein Modul von Nintendo, das man sich kaufen kann, zumindest, wenn man Hüpf- und Laufspiele mag. "Mega Man" ist zwar nicht der Weisheit letzter Schluß, es besticht aber durch seinen abwechslungsreichen Level-Aufbau.

It may not be as streamlined as other Mega Man games, and the difficulty might be a bit much to some, but the original Mega Man is a true classic that challenged the conventions of the platformer genre and paved the way for decade after decade of endless sequels and spinoffs.
