NESLens of Truth
Mega Man 2 has everything you could ask for in a 2D platforming game – great graphics and sound, addictive and rewarding gameplay mixed with fantastic stages. The game is nearly perfect. If I HAD to say something bad about MM2, it would be that I wish it were longer – a common negative for fantastic games, especially on the NES. This doesn’t matter one bit, in my opinion, Mega Man 2 one of the top 3 games on the NES.

Mega Man 2 takes everything that was good about Mega Man and improves upon it. If you are a fan of platformers or shooter then you have to pick this one up. If you aren’t this could be the game that changes your mind.

This is one of the best games ever released on the NES or any system. It is also available on the original Game Boy However, I have never tried it so I don't know if it is changed from this one. This is a significant improvement over the first game. The first game was just the tip of the iceberg and is recognized for being a bit difficult. The games following Mega Man II lacked the creativity of this game, although there were some new innovations here and there in each one. For you young 'punks' who only have knowledge of Capcom through the Resident Evil style games, this is something from their previous years.

Mega Man: the whole series is basically run-'n'-gun action. Move around an unsettlingly calm blue robot, shoot white pellets at odd creatures that pop up and fight a boss robot if, and when, the conclusion of the stage is reached. Not exactly an all-star premise. One of the draws, though, is the ability to choose the order in which you want to complete the stages. Another is the satisfaction of seeing that particular piece of the stage-select puzzle blank after returning from a glorious victory. And then there's the final showdown in the center of the board, which of course is only available after beating -- in the case of Mega Man 2 -- eight robot bosses. This leads to three more stages of mayhem, a reprise of the robot bosses and, finally, the disposable doctor himself.

Capcom's intention with the upcoming Mega Man 9 is to mirror what made Mega Man 2 such a success -- and to emphasize the point, they've positioned this Virtual Console release of the game as a lead-in to the new title's WiiWare debut. The company's marketing tactics are sound here, as there's no better way to get yourself ready for Mega Man's next great adventure than by experiencing his greatest past quest. Let's also hope that strong sales of this, the first Mega Man that came to the VC last month and Mega Man 9 all together will encourage Capcom to continue to support Nintendo's retro download service with more of the Blue Bomber's past adventures -- because even though Mega Man 2 is the pinnacle, there are still several other spectacular sequels we'd love to revisit in Virtual Console form. This game is old and I can beat it in an hour without losing any lives, but I still play it, it's just so much fun! This game addicted me to the Mega Man series. I suggest you give it a spin or you're missing out!

Every time I play Mega Man 2, I just seem to like the game more and more! Everything required to make a platform game incredibly entertaining has been crammed in. The graphics are varied and possess amazing detail. The sprites are probably the best I've seen in a Nintendo game. The sound can't be faulted either with great effects and tunes. But it's the playability that really makes this game so brilliant. The programmers must have spent months racking their brains to come up with the mind-warping puzzles seen here. I'll put this simply. Mega Man 2 ranks as one of the greatest NES games I've ever seen, with unsurpassed addictive qualities. Buy it as soon as possible.

Sega fans might noticed MM2's uncanny resemblance to Sonic the Hedgehog (Genesis). The traps, robotic enemies, and general style of play are incredibly similar. My only reservations about this game concern the preponderance of "fatal falls", thanks to high altitude platforms that your adversaries can easily knock you off of. I much prefer the ground-based levels, but Mega Man 2 is still first class all the way. Two difficulty levels are including, along with a new password feature.

Megaman 2 has everything one could ask for in an NES action title: level design, music, boss battles, tight controls...It's no wonder Megaman 9 is being based off of this specific installment. There are some minor flaws with the game, half of which are more technical limitations of the NES, but this is a quality title for five dollars. Megaman 2 not only solidified the formula of the franchise, it also was a superbly executed 8-bit creation that is relevant today as a testament to exactly what Megaman 9 is here to remind us of: solid design is timeless. If you somehow missed this piece of gaming lore over the past twenty years or if you simply haven't played it in a long time, fork over five dollars and spend an evening (re)discovering one of console gaming's early gems.

So this game is fun, but easy. This game has a lot of replay value for those who would want to play it over and over, and it is a fun enough that many will. However, for those who just beat a game and move on, this one won’t last long. This game is in many ways a classic, but its longevity is dependent on the mood of the player.

NESPower Play
