MegaRace

There are cutaways to the cameraman and technicians in the studio and even the folks watching at home. Over it all, the deliberately talky and annoying show host adds a weird, exploitative edge. It all looks great and blends well with the action, but never winds up being better than the game itself. This is great video gaming stuff.

Die Reihe setzt sich fort: Nachdem der Lawnmower Man auf CD-Rom nicht einen Bruchteil von dem halten konnte, was er versprach, wurde es auch Zeit, daß sich ein Softwareproduzent einem CD-Rom-Spiel widmet, das in puncto Spielbarkeit mit Rebel Assault konkurrieren kann. Megarace hat zwar nicht den fantastischen Star-Wars-Hintergrund wie Rebel Assault, kann diesem aber trotzdem in vielerlei Hinsicht das Wasser reichen.

If you can overcome the difficult controls, MegaRace can generate MegaFun. Beginning gamers, however, and those with little patience will have a hard time with this disc. Once you're deep into the game, you'll agree that the fast racing and excellent graphics make it Mega-nificent.

A clever racing game with obvious influences from sci-fi flicks like Blade Runner, Running Man and Road Warrior. Race against speed punks as part of a futuristic, cyberpunk TV game show. The goal is to wreak a lot of havoc and please the TV viewers. The more dead punks and explosions, the better. The race tracks are sleek and cyber-realistic. A fun racing game overall. The emphasis on ultra-violence is the Mega Race's best feature.

Megarace has the same kind of effect as biting into a shiny, red apple to find out it is rotten at the core. Viewing the tremendous introductory sequence and the cut scenes in the television studio will cause any self-respecting games player to begin salivating. Then, upon starting the game proper, the amazing digitised backgrounds will certainly impress you. The trouble is, that within five minutes of beginning to play, you will have the distinct impression that you've seen it all before. The action gives no great impression of speed and, while it's fun in a simple kind of way, Megarace doesn't really have much to recommend it beyond some great presentational sequences.

Betyget tre får spelet uteslutande för att det är fantastiskt att se och lyssna på. Simulatordelen är värd högst en tvåa.

Kamppailuautoilun komeissa puitteissa kykkii harvinaisen surkea peli. Pieni auto nykii eteenpäin mieletöntä speedwayta pitkin ja ampuu edessä olevia. P..kaa! Ei sisältöä, ei pelattavuutta. Rata sentään polveilee mallikkaasti ja sen ympärille olisi hienoa rakentaa vaikka Skidmarks III tai jokin muu HYVÄ ja INNOSTAVA peli. Pelkkä 3D-grafiikka ei tee peliä.

Das kümmerliche Spieldesign verpufft in einer Wolke aus ansehnlicher Drumherum-Verpackung kläglich. Respekt für die Präsentation; Gags und Video-Animation des digitalisierten Moderators sind erfreulich. Doch wenn das eigentliche Spiel beginnt, klappen die Kinnladen umso tiefer herunter. So schön die Hintergrundgrafik auch sein mag - auf den Pisten holpern unansehnliche Fahrzeug-Sprites träge über den Asphalt. Der Spielverlauf ist von rüder Schlichtheit: Gas geben, ballern und auswendig lernen, an welchen Stellen wichtige Extrasymbole auf dem Asphalt auftauchen. Spätestens nach zwei Stunden kann auch die Aufmachung nicht mehr über diese Defizite hinwegtäuschen. "Mega Gurke" wäre ein ehrlicherer Name gewesen...

The pre-rendered tracks don't look half bad, but the scaling is choppy, and cars often disappear and reappear mysteriously. And like too many other Sega CD titles, there's a buffoon that mocks you relentlessly before and after each race. If the developers had spent as much time on the gameplay as they did on the cheesy cut scenes, this game might have been worth playing. But Megarace is just a frustrating mess.
