MegaTraveller 2: Quest for the Ancients

Large, detailed playing area. Simple yet comprehensive controls – it is usually obvious what you need to click on. Plot is enjoyable and different – no dungeons to wander in this game! Rewarding if you are patient. Clumsy interface, with rather poor overhead graphics and some minor bugs.

All in all, once you get over its complexity and the somewhat cumbersome interface, MegaTraveler 2: Quests for the Ancients is an excellent game, rich in details and plot, that could keep you playing for many, many hours of enjoyment.

However, I'd recommend it to board game fans as it definitely brings their game to life and is superior to the first in the series. Some nice touches, like characters volunteering to perform tasks they have a particular aptitude for without being asked, add a certain amount of character, but RPGs of this detail tend to lose out on playability – and Megatraveller 2 is no exception...

Megatraveller 2 ist ein Beispiel dafür, wie man aus einem fantastischen Rollenspielsystem und einer prima Story ein mittelmäßiges Computerspiel machen kann. Wie schon im ersten Teil sind auch hier taktische Kämpfe ein Fremdwort. Gänzlich mißlungen ist das Raumkampfsystem: Hier läuft alles automatisch ab - während der eifrige Rollenspieler derweil nur genervt auf sein Armaturenbrett trommeln kann. Erfreulich verbessert zeigt sich das Benutzer-Interface: Die Menüflut des Vorgängers wurde durch eine übersichtliche und leicht zu handhabende Oberfläche ersetzt. Ein Rätsel des Universums bleibt weiterhin ungelöst: Wo sind die groß auf der Packung angekündigten 10 000 Stunden "Playtesting" geblieben. Trotz dieser gewaltigen Kraftanstrengung ist auch die fertige Version nicht frei von Grafikfehlern. Das Traveller-Universum hat Besseres verdient.

Megatraveller enthält eigentlich alle Grundelemente für ein gutes Rollenspiel. Ob man hingegen zum Budget-Preis Abstriche in puncto Grafik und Sound in Kauf nehmen will, muß jeder für sich selbst entscheiden.

MT2 has depth and you won't finish it in a few settings. Outdated by today's (1998) flashy RPG standards, the game is primitive in appearance and the gameplay slightly less so. Character interaction is limited and the sameness of the locations and actions are monotonous. MT2 offers a nostalgic look at the early days of role-playing.
