PlayStation 2Gaming Target (Jul 17, 2002)
With almost a constant amount of shooting going on, Men in Black II is quite a thrill to play from start to finish. Instead of using its license in providing a cheap gameplay experience, the developer delivers an old school gaming update at its best, even to the point where the scores at the end of the levels add up with classic bonuses and multipliers. The only major downside to picking MIB II up is the fact that is relatively short. Players will be able to complete the game in a couple hours time, so for some it may be best suited as a rental. For others though, the fun can last a lot longer than for just an entertaining weekend. Nevertheless, unless you hate this type of intense gameplay and feel its way too repetitive, fans shouldn’t miss out on MIB II. In coming out alongside the movie, Men In Black II should sell with great appeal and this is one movie game where its owners won’t been suckered into playing and disappointed in the end like we have seen so many times before.
PlayStation 2Game Informer Magazine (Sep, 2002)
Just like its movie cohort, Men in Black II: Alien Escape delivers in mindless fluff. Supplying little by the way of plot and sticking to what is known to work well, MIB II has decent graphics, lots of guns, and straightforward shooter controls (although the default config is a little counter-intuitive, other schemes worked better for me). I want more for my money, but MIB II begins to break the curse of movie games.
PlayStation 2GameSpot (Jun 26, 2002)
In the end, what keeps Men in Black II: Alien Escape from being a great game is its length. The story mode provides five missions that can be completed in 20-30 minutes each, and the unlockable training and boss modes don't provide too much more entertainment. Due to its short length and relative ease, Men in Black II: Alien Escape is a better rental than a purchase, but it's fun while it lasts.

Men in Black II: Alien Escape is a short, simple shooter that you'll beat in a day and forget about in a week; it's also the kind of strictly average game that's a bitch to write about because it's neither awful enough to slag, nor cool enough to praise. If you're one of the four remaining old-school shooter fans in North America, or you cannot function as a productive member of society without the presence of the Men in Black franchise in your life, you should most definitely consider renting Men in Black II: Alien Escape. Otherwise, don't bother.

In the end, the main issue that keeps Men in Black II: Alien Escape from being a better game is its length. The story mode provides five missions that can be completed in 20-30 minutes each, and the unlockable training and boss modes don't provide too much more entertainment. Due to its short length and relative ease, Men in Black II: Alien Escape is a game you'd probably want to rent rather than purchase, but it's fun while it lasts.

Men in Black 2: Alien Escape is a surprisingly enjoyable game. Featuring fast, exciting, and satisfying gameplay, it is simply a blast to play through. But once you beat the game, there isn't much to keep you coming back. It looks good and controls well enough, but three hours just isn't enough gameplay to warrant a purchase. To someone who loves shooters or is a big MIB fan, it might almost be worth the $29.99 price tag, but I would recommend renting it before you decide to buy it. MIB2 is definitely a solid rental for anyone who wants some mindless shooting action for an evening.

If you couldn't tell, I was not impressed with this feature of gameplay, just as I wasn't impressed with the gameplay of Alien Escape, which is criminal. This franchise deserves much better than this, especially given the depth of the universe, or universes, the mythology of the Men In Black covers. Unfortunately, it seems like there wasn't a clear enough focus on basic elements of gameplay, resulting in a lackluster attempt overall. There are much better shooters or action games out there, and only the greatest fan of the Men In Black concept will derive any pleasure out of this one.

Men in Black II features all the ingredients needed for a fine movie-license game?the lovely graphics, the movie-style atmosphere, the capable cutscenes?but the game's inaccessibility makes it very hard to enjoy. It's almost as if the designers meant for gamers to play with cheats on from the get-go (cheats which they thoughtfully didn't provide in time for this review). Indeed, if there's an invincibility code for this game, then it could potentially be an enjoyable one-time rental from the video store. Paying full-price for this game, though, will likely make you feel like a buffoon after a few days.
PlayStation 2IGN (Jul 08, 2002)
So, in the final analysis, Men in Black II is a super bland, utterly forgettable shooter that doesn't do the movie or the animated series any justice. It's filled with redundant gameplay techniques that don't compete with the greats of the genre, and only the boss fights are worth your time if you're a serious player (perhaps the last two levels might -- might -- give you a challenge). Boring, mindless, and pathetic stuff, really. Melbourne House is capable of so much more. I guess the game's only saving grace is that it's selling for cheap, at $29.95, about $20 less than most games. My serious recommendation is to just go see the movie, and then see it a second time. Rent this thing at your own danger. BUT ONLY if you're ridiculously, sadly, pathetically, horribly, miserably, uncontrollably, desperately desperate. And that's a frickin' really big if.

Unbedingt meiden!
PlayStation 2Game Revolution (Jul, 2002)
Though the idea of incorporating shoot 'em up stylings into a third-person action game is conceptually worthwhile, the execution falls flat on its head. The characters lack the mobility to face the alien menace and the game is unforgiving in its approach. Men in Black II is way off track and should be left on store racks.
