The improved graphics and cutscenes are really the primary selling point of this version, but since the original was so good, there was little reason to make further changes. This is a great edition of a great title, and GameCube owners everywhere should probably add this to their collections.

Metal Gear Solid: The Twin Snakes is one hell of a game. It marks many great things with its release. First off is the fact that Nintendo loyalists have finally recieved a Metal Gear Solid game to call their own after all of these long and painful years. It also marks yet another brilliant remake for the GameCube.

The masterwork that spurred a cinematic movement and made high-tech espionage a staple in the world of video games is back to entertain another generation. Whether you found yourself staring wide-eyed in disbelief at a taut, action-packed sequence, or marveling in awe at the cleverness of the stealth-laden gameplay, Metal Gear Solid delivered one memorable moment after another in its original version. Under the guidance of series’ creator Hideo Kojima and the development muscle of Silicon Knights, players are invited to rekindle these unforgettable moments in this technologically advanced remake.
All in all, there is nothing I can tell fans of the series that they don’t already know. This game kicks ass, and remains one of the best games of all time. Now it’s even prettier. For the rest of the 2 or 3 of you who haven’t played the series, you are missing out and I can’t suggest enough that you go out and demand Twin Snakes! It’s the best 40 dollars investment you can make, as you will play it over and over and over again. Just ask any MGS fan.
Featuring intuitive and responsive control, open-ended puzzles, excellent pacing and a wonderful story, this remake is definitely worth the $39.99 price tag attached to it. Even if you’ve played the original to death, there is definitely enough new gameplay to be found to warrant a revisit to the Shadow Moses nuclear disposal facility.
The Next Level
Although Metal Gear Solid: The Twin Snakes doesn't attain a new standard of innovation, it does offer fans and newcomers alike a riveting, wholly entertaining experience quite unlike anything they've encountered before in this genre. Emerging on the GameCube as a bolder, refined hybrid, Twin Snakes captures the essence of the original classic and combines it with the acclaimed gameplay nuances of its sequel, Sons of Liberty. The end result is simply remarkable, thanks to the collective talents of Silicon Knights and Konami Entertainment of Japan (KCEJ), who introduce a distinct dimension that couldn't possibly be achieved six years ago. Unfortunately, this achievement comes at a high price that mars its potential for perfection.
I realize that this is all wishful thinking, but when you've bested the ultimate enemy, collected every dog tag, and squeezed out every ounce of replay value that the game has to offer, what's there left to do? In any case, fans will embrace Twin Snakes for everything its worth; they aren't the ones who need to be told to buy the game. They own it, and they'll continue to enjoy anything Hideo Kojima and his development team throw at them. It's the rest of society that needs to be brought into the loop. So if you're among that group of people still sitting at home pondering whether this is worth your time and cash, buy the game. Buy it today and experience the definitive game that put tactical espionage action on the map.

All in all this is one of the best games on the GameCube. It's an exclusive too which makes it a great reason to own the console. Pick this one up, it will be well worth it.
Gamers should liquidate their assets to get this game. (Assuming they knew how great it was and they had no other funds available.) Metal Gear Solid: The Twin Snakes is the perfect game to complement your GameCube collection. It's entirely different from anything Nintendo offers, yet still has Nintendo-quality gameplay. The story had me on the edge of my seat from beginning to end - and I already knew what was going to happen! I was lucky to have forgotten some of it, making the revelations a bit more surprising. There are some new elements, too, but I'm not about to give them away.
To a big Metal Gear fan like myself, Metal Gear Solid: The Twin Snakes was a bit of a disappointment. You expect them to shake things up a bit when they remake a game, but most of the alterations were a step back rather than a step forward. However, that doesn't change the fact that this is still one amazing game. If you've never had the chance to lead Snake through Shadow Moses Island before, I highly recommend picking this game up. But if you're already a big fan of the original Metal Gear Solid, this game really doesn't offer enough to warrant paying full price for it unless the graphical upgrade really makes it worthwhile for you. Otherwise, a rental will probably suffice.
Metal Gear Solid: The Twin Snakes is a damn fine update to one of PlayStation's best games. It's supported by one of the most compelling storylines in a videogame to date -- epic, engaging, entertaining and ultimately very satisfying. It features perhaps the best story presentation of any title out there. This is unquestionably the case if we only consider real-time cinematics in games and not pre-rendered CG sequences. And for the most part it's a lot of fun to play, successfully combining seat-of-your- pants stealth elements with action and puzzle-solving aspects. Did I mention the game features some of the better graphics on Nintendo's console? Add all of this up and you have something very special. If you've never played Metal Gear before, you should stop reading this review right now and pick up a copy of Twin Snakes -- I think you'll be pleased.
Overall, Metal Gear Solid the Twin Snakes is exactly what players wanted so long ago – Metal Gear Solid 2 gameplay with the Metal Gear Solid storyline. Though the port is rather incomplete as much of the level-design doesn’t take advantage of the new abilities and a lot of the cinematics are generally too long and overbearing, it’s still an incredibly enjoyable game even if we have seen it before a few times in the past across various consoles. Pick this one up if you’re a Metal Gear Solid fan or are just interested in jumping into the series and look for our in-depth comparison of Metal Gear Solid and the new Metal Gear Solid the Twin Snakes soon.
If you're a video game publisher in need of a big hit, what's one surefire way to create a game with plenty of appeal and a ready-made audience? Well, you could always remake one of the most revered action games of the last decade. That's exactly what Konami (in collaboration with Nintendo and Silicon Knights) has done with Metal Gear Solid: The Twin Snakes, which is a modern-day update of Hideo Kojima's seminal 1998 stealth action classic. You might think it hasty for these companies to remake a game that's scarcely five years old when there are other older games that are just as deserving of a makeover. Regardless, The Twin Snakes retains nearly all of the qualities that made its original incarnation so memorable. It's too bad the new version doesn't add more to the experience for fans who still retain a clear memory of the original, but those who never played the original Metal Gear Solid will be in for a great ride.
Yes this game is a remake with nothing really new to offer, but it was a classic on the Playstation, and it hasn't lost any of its magic in the Gamecube remake. Highly recommended.
As for those of you who cherished the original game? This is the best pair of rose-tinted spectacles money can buy, and a good alternative to the anti-climax of seeing how a once-cherished favourite has aged. If you only have a fading memory of the game you once loved, playing The Twin Snakes is akin to watching an old movie and seeing it the way your mind's eye remembers it, complete with technical improvements you couldn't even imagine at the time. It's an experience that we don't often get to appreciate as gamers or otherwise.
It may seem as if I've been dwelling on the deficiencies of Metal Gear Solid: The Twin Snakes for most of this review. But this is simply because the source material is so dear to such a large audience of gamers, that trying to revisit and rebuild that game almost seems like a futile effort. That said, I ask myself a simple question: "Should gamers buy MGS: The Twin Snakes?" Yes. If you've played the original, then this remake offers a wonderful trip down memory lane with drastically improved visuals and fantastic new cutscenes. Gamers who missed MGS the first time around will likely enjoy these elements as well. And, hopefully, any of the concerns I had with the gameplay come simply as a comparison to the original and will not affect gamers who missed the PlayStation outing. Really, when all is said and done, this is Metal Gear Solid. Sure, it has a few blemishes … but overall, it's the same experience you loved before, only now it looks better.
It’s almost impossible to evaluate Metal Gear Solid: The Twin Snakes without holding it up to the PlayStation original. It sounded great on paper: Remake one of the greatest games ever created with enhanced graphics, new voices, and additional character abilities, and it can’t miss, right? Oh, yes, it can.
Overall, Metal Gear Solid: The Twin Snakes is an experience; comfortingly familiar for diehard fans and ready-made for today's more demanding generation. Though certain new additions sit uneasily against the seven year-old framework, and the genre may have evolved past the truncated structure of its original (and still-present) PlayStation base, at its height, very few titles in the genre can match this or any Metal Gear for sheer style and panache.
I've said it before and I'll say it again. Silicon Knights kicks major fucking ass. The only development house that can even touch it is American Retro Studios, and they have yet to prove themselves with a follow-up to the still amazing Metroid Prime. These Silicon Knights bastards are Canadians. Hmmm, no Japanese developers on my top two. Weird. But SK has now hit three straight outta the ballpark. We've got Legacy of Kain, Eternal Darkness and now MGS. I humbly bow down to their collective genius and eagerly await their next masterpiece.
Rent it if you played the original. Own it if you didn’t.
